Eats "whatever he likes" does not mean he's not on a good diet. I imagine when he says he "eats pizza" its probably one slice every few months, when he feels and not the typical fatty behavior. Theres no way this guys portion sizes arent incredibly small, so yea, he "eats what he likes" (eats 1500 calories)

The man has always been very lean, but I imagine he focused on the intermittent fasting due to the requirements for being a race car driver (his new second occupation). It's like a horse jockey. You must maintain a certain weight to reduce the amount of load the vehicle has for max speed/acceleration.

I think the secret is just finding a style of training that you enjoy. The fitness "community" can often be overly focused on optimization to the point where people will dismiss many training methods that are perfectly adequate. By far the biggest factor when it comes to getting and staying in shape is adherence. You can pick pretty much any style of training that is popular and it will work, but only if you stick with it long term. And the only way to do that is to enjoy it.
