What I love about this, is that once Shaw is frozen, Charles takes his place in the scene and with the mix of their dialogue and the cuts between Shaw and Charles, the scene becomes about the slow torture and death of their friendship, Charles pleading for Eric to make the right decision and the way Eric looks at Shaw (and in a sense, Charles) as he kills him is heartbreaking, Eric knows Charles can feel what Shaw is going through, and shows Eric's resolve and how strong his will is, that he would put his bestfriend through experiencing the death of Shaws conciousness for his revenge. Everyone is talking about how the death was the highlight of the scene but I think that the phrase "I agree with every word you just said" is what really made the difference. You spend the whole movie going after this villain and before he gets defeated, all his evil mindset was practically passed onto Magneto who had the same mindset all along which is like never actually killing him which is fascinating.
@N313GrayFox2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, usually Magneto's origin involves him essesntially turning into the thing he hates (a racist bigot), but against the human kind. Which is already genius enough, First Class just takes it to the next level by simply having him turn into the next Shaw. It does have a slight wrinkle in that Erik ends up hating humans because of a mutant (if you notice, they conveniently have him not reveal his powers until well after the beginning of the movie so that Erik will believe him to be a non-mutant and his racism against non-mutant kind remains). Maybe they could have reused the machine from the 2000 X-Men movie (that turns humans into mutants) and have Shaw gain his powers that way. Except have it have a caveat that Magneto can't replicate in the future. Like maybe in Shaw's version you directly steal another mutant's power and it kills them in the process. Something Magneto isn't willing to do.

Sadly, there really was no other way than killing Shaw: What were they going to do, put him in a cage and hope he behaves? A cage that can contain a nuclear explosion? Put him literally anywhere other than in a casket, and he sets off world war 3.
