So, what is the effect of a smaller effective focal spot on patient dose when using AEC. I assume it would be slightly higher, no? But then a narrower beam would be exposing a smaller area, so would it then result in smaller dose essentially canceling out any initial dose increase?

Hi Bench-Made Manliness, there is not direct relationship between focal spot size and dose. The collimation is the more important point than the focal spot size.

@@HowRadiologyWorks Interesting. It was my understanding that on an AEC exposure, irradiating a smaller area would increase the exposure time slightly and thus increase dose while when not using AEC it would not effect dose. No?
