I kinda like how bright the first half of the movie is, for a horror film. There’s no using darkness to muddle the graphic acts, or to create an affect. It makes it more real, which makes it scarier. That doesn’t always work.

3 details you might have missed: 1.) There are “Missing person” pamphlets at the gas station on the board. 2.) The dead bohemian has bruises down his torso and leg. I imagine it’s from Pearl “having her fun” with him. 3.) Pearl’s dolls all have blue eyeshadow, just like Maxine.

I think a part of Howard staying, seeing as he also seems comfortable with murder, is that the man lived and fought in some of the bloodiest wars of all time. After WW1, I imagine he was probably desensitized to killing people since he probably had to kill hundreds of them himself.

More than that I'd argue he wasn't mentally well to begin with, even before WW1. I'd say he probably suffered from a pathology similar to what Pearl had as consequence of an abusive/absent family, after all, he did leave his affluent household to work in the farm with Pearl. WW1 and WW2 probably served as venting mechanisms for him and his pathology the same way killing animals did for Pearl.

IMO the gator in X *is* Theda; gators can live up to 80 years in human care. I saw X for the first time right before Pearl in the theater and all I could think about in between was how tame the gator was to not have eaten Maxine. It seems that perhaps at some point Pearl was comfortable enough to even get in the water with it, and Maxine is so similar to Pearl that Theda can't tell the difference between them. It adds a Peter Pan-esqueness to the story that correlates with Captain Hook vs the alligator with the ticking clock in its stomach: Age catches us all, eventually. Maxine is gonna end up *just like Pearl* and I hope we get a fourth movie about the 50's and 60's with Howard and Pearl and what they were really doing on the farm.

I think that Howard stayed because in some extent, he was similar to Pearl. I think he enjoyed killing, because Mitsy said that he went to WWI even when he had an excuse not to go, and he volunteered for WWII as well. @steph8703 If you live in a one-party-consent state that will allow you to record other people without their knowledge or consent, I would recommend buying a digital audio recorder and slipping it in a pocket when you interact with him. The audio recording may provide enough evidence to get a mental health warrant to force him to get treatment for an undiagnosed mental illness. It's VERY shady and he would resent you for it for a time, but if he is indeed mentally ill, you have a responsibility to your child(ren) to ensure that their father is getting the appropriate care that he needs. Having children around an unstable actor is incredible dangerous. I worked security in a mental health facility for 3 years and I have read the reports/ Emergency Detention Orders of people who just snapped one day and hurt their kids or spouses. Don't run the risk. Do your research. Meet with an attorney. Get him help.

@@blenderpain8249no, narcissistic personality disorder is NOT the same as BPD. narcissists can’t handle rejection because of how in love with themselves they are. BPD people can’t handle rejection because of trauma. The constant need to feel loved is also different. with BPD it’s a genuine love people crave. With narcissists they want people obsessed with them and only them.

In combat it was just to accept the suffering and not let it break you down. Howard, just coming home from the war, just entered another battlefield and inexplicably felt at home. That’s how I felt anyway. If you can just bare with it, it’ll eventually get better.

I get that, he was already acclimatised to horror from the war. Also I think in the past often a lot of people just committed to their fate, sticking with marriages and families that were sometimes really horrifying. We can see that also in Pearl's mother, this is part of the stoic ethic she demonstrated and wanted to impart into her daughter also. For a lot of people this commitment and loyalty is the heart of what a good person is, both brave soldiers and strong women trapped in an awful fate.

Tbh I’m a pearl’s mom defender. She’s an immigrant with no family, a paralyzed and mute husband, and a daughter she is afraid of, in the middle of a war and pandemic. She has to manage the farm and keep them fed, she understood life was hard and you have to be realistic. Pearl is relatable to me in terms of a narcissistic side of me that exists but I don’t think she’s understandable at all

I understand the mother. Germany in the late 1800s was war torn and surviving that is hard. Immigrating is hard. Farming Is hard. They only had one living child in an area when birth control didnt exist and having half a dozen children was the norm. So maybe it was a hard birth and she couldnt have children anymore. Farming is hard work. It never stops. Besides growing crops theres selling them. Daily care of animals. And household duties like laundry, cooking, cleaning and now nursing.... You can see the light has gone out in her eyes.

She could have made a million different decisions that would have resulted in her leaving that farm but she chose murder so she made it so she could never leave now. Can’t feel bad about that. Abuse doesn’t give the right to anyone to murder anyone else. She was narcissistic, and cruel and she didn’t deserve a happy ending and honestly I believe that’s part of the point of the film. Not everyone who thinks they are the shit and deserve success will get it for one reason of another, it doesn’t entitle the person to then act selfishly.

@@SocialExperiment232 while I agree with you to a certain extent, I think the bigger picture is mental illness and how treatment wasn’t there for it- even the few treatments that did exist out there were deemed sinful or just awful and made the mental health of the patient worse. Timing is important, and at the time everyone cared about religion, saving face, and their family image even if they were on the farm and in the middle of no where. I mean this was goin on at the same time were lobotomies were advertised as a cure all: overruling daughter? Lobotomy will fix that. Baby won’t stop crying? Lobotomy. Child having difficulties to read? Lobotomy. A stutter? Lobotomy. Mood Swings? Lobotomy. Headaches? Lobotomy. Even the Kennedy’s wanted to sponsor lobotomies if it worked on their daughter Rosemary. Even if her parents wanted to seek help for Pearl, not like they could afford it as the movie made it clear there was money troubles. Pearl clearly was struggling with something mentally, without treatment suffering from it and was even being reprimanded for it by her mother which is a cruel irony since either one or both her parents technically passed on and gave her that mental illness genetically. Mental illness is still not an excuse or ok for murder by any means, but especially a mental illness that you didn’t ask for is now controlling you and you don’t know how to fix it because it’s considered shameful/sinful so it was only spoken about in punishments you deserved or as insults towards you is hard to fight back. How can you correct a problem you don’t know about? The Ed Gein case is a perfect example of this because it also happened in the same time period, on a farm, grew up with an abusive mom, was not mentally all there from a young age and people knew it, was bullied for it, became isolated on a farm he couldn’t leave and even when he had the opportunity to leave stayed, started grave robbing and murdering and his outlet was also being creative in some art form. For Pearl that was her normal because everyone shamed her for “being a problem” instead of helping her with her problems- which scarily enough still happens till this day with some parental- children relationships.

@@AdamIshak01 i get it and that excuse would work for me if she had only murdered her parents. If a person murders their abusers I can’t really blame them because nobody was listening or helping to end the abuse then wth was the person supposed to do: be abused forever? But no, she chose to murder innocent people and that’s where her excuse ends. She could have sold and left the farm after her parents died but she chose to stay and become a sadistic murder who was jealous of prettier younger women like a huge pick me. We could sit here and talk about all the possible illnesses serial killers have that made them how they are, the point is they murdered innocent people, so the excuse doesn’t work.

@@SocialExperiment232 To me it’s less of an excuse and more so a motivator. Misty’s death was especially upsetting to me because Mitsy treated her pretty decently throughout the film, only to be violently mauled with an axe because of Pearl’s jealousy. This is just one example of all the innocent people she’s killed. The abuse she suffered and dreams she watched be shattered don’t excuse her actions in any way, but they provide interesting insight into how mistreatment can lead to horrible consequences for all. I think can recognize how awful Pearl’s actions were while still sympathizing for her shitty experiences.

I was diagnosed with BPD in early 2023 and I said to my partner who had seen me at my highs and lows pre and post diagnosis, "she has BPD" and I left it at that, sitting there in such a complex state. I felt so... taken aback at what I was and how it felt so right before I started weekly therapy. When the protectionist said "you're scaring me" I felt my heart break for her because I know that feeling when you realize you've gone too far but don't realize it until it's too late. Then comes desperation, self hatred, numbness, all within maybe an hour. Your skin feels like it wants to die. It is the most painful thing I have ever experienced and it never goes away. In X, he appears to be in his 60's, so he might have been born somewhere between 1919- 1920. How could he have possibly escaped? During the WWII, he could have possibly served the war in place of his father and never came back (He'd be about 19-20 yrs old that time). Plus, his most famous line which Maxine also said: "I will not accept the life I do not deserve." has such a heavy weight on it. I have a feeling that it wasn't the first time Pearl and Howard has ever heard that line. Anyway, I came up with this theory because Pearl being Maxine's grandmother makes so much sense to me.

Fame and beauty all fade over time. Nothing is permanent in life. You can have all the riches in the world but you’ll die alone with nothing in hand. In my opinion Pearl did get one thing. Love. She got the love she so desperately wanted from her husband. But that’s about it. I love this video! Thank you so much for posting.

In X Theda said something to her husband when Maxxine run he said: "we have one in basement " and Theda replied " No this one is special, she has what I used to have" about Maxxine She even told Maxxine that she was a dancer in picture 🖼️ and she killed both producer and camera man with forks so Theda is definitely Perle in my opinion and Maxxine is the character that broke the circle to fame when the detective was after her past

As someone with BPD, I can say that it's entirely possible that Pearl has it too. Her saying that she "feels things very deeply" makes alot of what she does make sense. I'm either really happy, or really sad, or really angry ect. Emotions are SO intense and rarely do I mildly feel anything. My symptoms would probably be much worse if weren't aware of having BPD. Not knowing if there's something wrong with you or not can cause other extremes. It's hard to know for sure about Pearl but I'd say that you're close if you're not right.

I am also ADHD-C (AuDHD) and similar on those point but I think it's important to remember that those carachteristic are what is seen by the outside, WHile we show some comportement that look close the causes are wildly different. BPD people act more on impulse due too stress and struglle a lot more with contexte clue than we do, we are more likely than her to understand that it's not a personal fault on our part or on other people part but a context part and be less recentful, also BPD people impulsivity is stress induced while ours is constant, so we ahve a whole life of mastering our impulsivity while their is far more of an once in a year situation that make it harder to handle. Also while our feeling are really strong they arent exactly as pervasive as their's, we are easyer to stop in a way. We may exhibit some common trait in the eye of the neurotypical but the causes are diffrent just like an avallanche and a blizzard both carry a lot of snow and might make a landskape look the same, how it was made too look that way is entierly different. Ps: I have dysorthographia and English is my second language so sorry for the thousand of mistake I am sure I made.

Wow, I actually have the same issues too. I started talking to myself when I was 12 and I tend to daydream a lot. I would have imaginary friends and they eventually became my ocs. I've always wanted to express my at home talents on stage to a large audience. I've dreamt of it before. I've also wanted to act in a movie, open up a café and become a well known and most highly demanded graphic designer. These ideas have been sprouting for a while now. And I'm also viewed as quite eccentric because of how I am socially, how piercing my eyes appear when I make eye contact with the people I talk to, how I speak to myself often and stay on my own many times.

i feel like Howard staying with pearl even after discovering what she did really matches what he did in x. Also, Howard and pearl killing the characters in x for no clear reason makes me think that maybe pearl and him developed a love for murder from killing her parents and from the war, and the cabin is just a prop to lure people and kill them.

I don't condone the terrible things Pearl has done, but if her mom wasn't so cold and mean towards her daughter maybe she wouldn't have been so destructive? A lot of ppl don't either realize/or care, that by not showing a child love it really traumatizes them and most of the time stops them from growing up into a happy adult? Besides the killing, I completely understand why Pearl is the way she is from personal experience? When I saw "X" I immediately fell sorry for older Pearl(again, I don't condone the killing)because u can tell she was a woman that didn't get to do what she dreamed of doing within her life, leaving her now insane older self to constantly long even more for her youth and an exciting life off of the farm? As bad as I felt for her, I still cracked up watching her literally YEET her own self out thru the front door.

I can’t wait for Maxxxine to be released, I wonder what the plot of that one would be considering the horror/slasher theme X and Pearl had, who would be doing the killing in Maxxxine now that Pearl is dead? Are they going to somehow make Maxine the killer as a way to have a cycle continue or will they choose another character to be the killer? I know it’ll take place in Los Angeles with Maxine finally being the adult star she wanted to be but I wonder if the murder on the farm will come back to haunt her or if it’s a whole other storyline
