I learned this the hard way… the new firmware deleted everything!! I did save all my scenes to a USB drive but the new firmware would not recognize that there was anything on the USB… I ended up having to download Behringer X32 Edit software onto a computer, then upload my saved scenes to it, then export it back to the mixer from the Edit App…. It took me many phone calls and a loong time to figure it out.

Thank you! I have been frustrated trying to accomplish this very thing. I am using Traction 7 for my DAW and the best I could do was get the DAW mix to play back on 2 channels on the X32. The REC / PLAY feature and the Input settings (along with a tweak in Tracktion) is what will do the trick. As you were talking about the Play / Rec option, I was already thinking that I would forget about it and not have any sound for practice on Sunday morning!! Great callout. Thanks again!

Thank you Allam! I am now using Reaper to record all 32 channel with my M32R console. It works well! My question, some of the track has really low level audio input, my question...if I increase the gain knob (on the console), will it affect to the level chanel on the console (will make the overall level on LR output increase as well). Can I set it separately? We have no congregation, so I use the Main LR on MIDAS connected to Video Mixer for streaming.

Made the mistake of not checking the recording input, as I was using the S32 on my X32 compact to record a live show, nothing but blank files. It's ok though, since the bass player decided he'd rather be wasted than play well, so I can't feel too badly about missing the recordings. It would be nice when you use the Utility section to Globally change everything to AES50 including your recording inputs! Granted it's totally my fault, but this would be nice in case you forget to set the recording inputs from local to AES50. Now that I know, I can't wait to record. Also managed to get a San Disk Extreme U3 class 10 128GB card to work with the SD slot 1. I haven't tried slot 2 with it yet, but I'm sure it would work as well. The only catch to getting the card to work is to format it to FAT32 using a program on your laptop or PC, since the included utility on the board may not support anything higher than the 32GB they officially support. With the board in 16 channel mode, I can get over 10 hours worth of recording time on that 128GB card. Easily capture a whole night of bands playing on one card... so long as you set the recording inputs correctly!

There is a trick using the P-16 channels that (with the correct routing) allows you to send signals into a DAW and include the onboard channel strip from the X32. You are limited to 16 channels at a time, but it might fit your needs. I don’t currently have a video about this, but maybe I can make one soon as this has come up a bit recently.

@AllamHouse

It is on version 4.0 and later. You will find it in the Routing > Input. It is the right-most encoder. ‘Rec’ is for normal service. ‘Play’ is for virtual playback from the computer.

If you are on V4.0 or later you can use the USER out section to custom build some routing. You can then select this output routing setup on the card section of the routing area. Hey Dave! Tripped across this video; very useful. How did you setup the Main L/R and Stream L/R to be recorded in the DAW? We use Logic and saving the multitracks would be useful for training and developing our sound engineers. Thanks- Jorge
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
The first thing to keep in mind is that you can only run 32 tracks across USB so if you are currently recording all 32 inputs you will need to pick a few to not record. I usually go into Routing > Card and set 25-32 as User Outs. Then, in Routing > User > Outputs I set 25-28 to match my inputs and then set 29/30 for Stream Outputs and 31/32 for Main LR output. This will grab those signals and send them into your DAW.

Great video - super useful feature! Quick question - when you route the tracks back into the X32 while in 'play' mode do you have the ability to change the gain? I'm only getting an option for trim? Thanks
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
True gain control is only allocated for the preamp on the console (or stage box). When flipping to a virtual soundcheck across USB or SD card (on the X-Live card) you can use the gain knob and this will impact digital trim. This increase or decrease will be reflected when you go back to the normal setting for live inputs so your efforts will be retained.

This would be a representation of your gain structure per channel. Many people set their gain according to what they need in their room and then realize they have very little signal coming into their console (and then their monitors and DAW). So I have a question regarding this type of setup. I want to run two DAWs (Ableton running loops and Logic for recording Logic Pro and doing vocal tuning). Yes, I shouldn't do it, *BUT* it's a proof of concept that I've been pondering about for a while. All inputs are local, but Logic returns back the tuned vocals for the audience/house, loops/stems/backing tracks run into the house but are also recorded into Logic. I've been fiddling with the routing settings on the X32 and I can't nail it, I know it's possible, just don't know how. It would be easier on the Mac because I can use something like SoundFlower/BlackHole and route between them, but again it's not so clear. Do you have any tips? 😅
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
So here are a few things to think about that might adjust your approach. 1) The console can only attach across USB to one computer to manage inputs/outputs. Most people running a basic Ableton rig will have two outputs (Click and tracks) and send the headphone out of this computer into a stereo DI box which allows them to plug these inputs into regular XLR inputs on the console. You can go more advanced and get a Focusrite interface that offers four outputs or a Moto that offers eight outputs, but that is a more complicated setup. 2) Using Step 1 as a guide to get click and tracks into the console you now have the USB to run Logic for recording and vocal processing. 3) Depending on the computer you are using (and its' location in your venue) it may be more efficient to pick one DAW to do everything and go across USB. ROUTING SETUP; The Basic setup with two DAWs would have your Ableton rig using a DI and coming in like any other input. Your Logic rig using USB. You would utilize the USER INPUTS section to determine which inputs come from a preamp and which come from USB return (vocals). Your CARD tab would send all your inputs to the card. Your DAW would use some version of Sub Outs to determine the routing for getting your vocals back into the console. Keep in ind you Do Not want your main mix in Logic turned up or routed to any output otherwise it could be coming back into your console. The Basic setup with one DAW would be similar in that you would use the USER INPUTS to map your desired click, tracks and vocals into the console from the DAW. You would want to make sure that you have your DAW outputs set appropriately for the items going back into the console and confirming your main DAW mix is not sneaking into the console in any way. There are a lot of details to get right when setting this up. I have linked a video below that might offer you the concepts to work with but if you want to work together I do offer one-on-one consultations. If you want to explore that route please fill out the contact card on my website at sound.allamhouse.com Video Link - kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2fHp56DmcSno9k

Yes, the USB slot on top of the console is a standard 2-track recorded and has selectable settings if you hit the view button right next to it. The X-USB card on the back is designed to offer the multitrack capability which could be setup to just do the same as the USB slot on top if desired.

This is interesting. In theory, if your inputs are the only thing that change (from REC to PLAY) then everything should work the same. Double check that you are not sending all of your multitracks to the individual input channels and NOT all to input 1/2 of the console.

Sometimes it is worth a fresh start. You can use the library (on the console) to store your EQ/comp settings for each input. Then Dona reset and get the basic workflow functioning, then reload the settings one at a time and make sure everything continues to work.

@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Жыл бұрын
I saw your other comment and just replied to it. I will post the same answer here in case someone has the same question while looking at this video. If you have the Behringer X32 you will need to upgrade to the X-Live card which allows for multitrack recording directly to SD cards. If you have the Midas M32 it will come with this card already installed. Outside of those options, you will need to use a DAW to record. If you are just going for a basic record and playback, you might look at Trackslive which is a free download from Waves and it is a very basic DAW that would be a direct replacement for the SD card concept if you need this soon.

"that's a little Tip from some of us that have done it all too many times" Jesus, I lost count of how many time I have to set up an XL4 and outboard dynamics, FX, blind as a starting point etc , especially at festivals to get it right in the first 10 bars of the bands first song using only Gain to start with so instruments could actually be heard, ignoring the audible mess! By song 2, i had Vocals and Drums Dialed in where they kinda need to be, Cymbals, Snare n Kick first priority - keep in mind, just to be heard in a ROUGH mix. By song 3 i had Bass and Gat at a level that was a good starting point including Guitar lead break patch changes so the Guitar man can do his Widdly Widdly, Wow wow , "Im the lead Guitarist" Moments without cutting of the heads of the first 7 rows! By song 4 id got BV's and keys happily where I wanted them. Song 5, now Id start polishing a turd using EQ , creative Dynamic Processing, with expensive outboard Dynamic processors on the Inserts etc ... By the last chorus on the last song on thier 2nd Encore, I typically had it perfect enough for me to want to listen to it at home... except I despised that unknown band, musically, by the time they got to the 9th bar of their first song. Kill me now, I fuck hate this job!

Yes, you want to make sure that the signal that sends your tracks back into the console are at zero. For me (in Presonus StudioOne) I use a Pre-Fader send for each channel that I set at 0 so that the entire signal I received from the console to the DAW will now go back to the console. This allows me to properly set my compression and stream levels knowing that my gain structure is pretty accurate.

You will treat the SD card similar to the USB recording. Take these steps. Recording--- 1) Go to Routing > Card and set 1-8 to be sourced by AuxIn 1-6/TB. 2) Go to the USB Recorder settings (click the view button next to the USB recorder) and find the option for the recorder source and change from USB to SD 3) When ready, go to USB Recorder and push the record button Playback--- 1) Go to Routing > Inputs and set the AUX In Remap (far right) to Card 1-6. 2) Go to the USB Recorder and push the play button *NOTE: I do not personally have this card installed in my console so I am going off of what I have learned from working on others' consoles. Make sure to test this during a non-production time to make sure you have all of the details worked out.

If you can't find the "Record / Play" switcher in the bottom right corner, it's only in firmware 4.0 and later... HOWEVER!!! don't update your firmware until you've saved your scene settings (see the pinned comment in this video). With the older firmware, you just have to constantly change the inputs yourself, I guess.

I believe this can be setup for DAW control, but it is very limited in its capabilities. The X-touch is probably an easier (and less expensive) tool. I’ve heard the WING is a much better DAW controller that is also a full console, but have always done my automation by hand.

@AllamHouse

I have not spent any time in Logic Pro for recording so I do not have specific answers to offer, but I would start with your gain on the console. Make sure you have a solid gain structure set per input where it shows between -18 and -12dB on the input meter. This should give you a solid signal coming into the DAW to work with on or off the console. Outside of that, I am not familiar with the AIIF format, but if you still have issues you might look to switch to a more standard .WAV file. I don't think the file type should change the playback, but it might be worth looking into. Good luck with the hunt, please let us know what you find out.

Hi Dave, great video once again! We just set up an X32 a month ago and it's working great for us. A couple weeks ago I tried to record our praise band using multitrack recording, and that worked good and I was able to play back through our sound system. Since then we had to make some changes as we are setting up IEMs, and in the process something must have gotten changed. When I play back the recording on the DAW, the whole band is played back on tracks 1-2 in addition to other tracks (drums are also on tracks 1-2). The whole band comes through on tracks 1-2 even when all the faders are down, and feedback seems just around the corner. Any ideas of what it might be? I recorded in Reaper originally, and I just downloaded Tracks Live and imported a few tracks and it did the same thing. Thanks in advance!

Reaper has defaulted to an output of L/R mains going out USB 1/2. This happens to me and I have to change it when I don’t use one of my templates I’ve built. Double check your settings and you should be good to go. If possible, build a template that includes your I/O mapping in Reaper and you can use that for each session.

Hello. Thank you for the great video! Using this tutorial, I was able to successfully set up Tracks Live with my X32 and create a multi-channel recording. But since then, I've noticed that sometimes when I boot up Tracks Live, the X-USB option is not there as an interface. Sometimes, it is there. Is there a boot sequence between the mixer and the PC that's required for the PC to recognize the mixer? In other words, does one device have to be turned on before the other? Thanks.

This is a great question, and one that I have never figured out myself. This would happen on my PC about once a month and it drove me crazy. I have experienced it on MAC, but found a solution that seems to work to wake-up my DAW and see the X-USB. What I do on MAC is switch my input device to me "Built-In Mic", hit Apply, then go back to the dropdown and X-USB is there (in a new spot in the list) and when I select it tends to work fine. For PC, the only thing I found that was the most consistent (but still not enough for me to call it a fix) was to... (1) Disconnect the USB cable (2) Power down the console (3) Reconnect the USB cable (4) Reboot the console Good Luck

We recently had a problem with the sound card signal. It turns out, we don't get a signal unless we turn on the x32 *before* we plug in the USB cable. So, we have to turn on the x32, then insert the cable, then let the light turn red, then the signal is available on the PC. If anyone else has a problem getting a signal, please try that. What is odd, is that when we started the x32 with the USB cable already plugged in, the console had the green light indicating the card was working *and* the red light on the back was also lit. We tried it with more than one PC.

Yes, if you have the X-Live card (which comes stock on the M32 now) you will have the SD card capability and then there is no DAW required. On the X32 (and I believe the original M32 models) the X-USB card only offers a USB output and therefore you need a DAW for multitrack recording.

The setup will be somewhat unique and I don't have a specific video to point you to for this setup. I usually take the approach of sending all my inputs to a DAW (for multitrack recording) which is the video you watched here. Once those signals are in the DAW you have the ability to manage them in the DAW and then route them back out (across USB) and back to the console. If it is just one input you can get away with just changing the source for that channel, but if it ends up being more than that it is usually best to use the User In settings. To get started though, just select the channel and go to Home > Config and then on the left you can select the card channel that your signal is returning to the console on (from your DAW). I like to keep a one-to-one routing inside the DAW so that channel 13 on my console is channel 13 on USB and channel 13 in the DAW. I hope that helps. If you need specific help feel free to fill out the contact card on my website and we can book a time to chat. sound.allamhouse.com

I'm going to make a video to answer this question, but I'm not quite finished yet. I'm assuming you mean you want to do an initial recording through the console and into a DAW. Then, do some basic mixing in the DAW and have that sent back to the console to be heard in some In-Ear Monitoring (IEM) to then record additional tracks into the DAW. If this is the case, you need to setup your DAW Main output (or a desired MixBUS) to come back across USB 1/2 from the DAW. You can have this feed into the console on AUX 1/2 and then add that into your IEM mix. When you go to Routing > Input you will see a section for AuxIn Remap and there you can select Card 1-2 which will automatically set the AUX in to work properly.

There are three main considerations to any computer purchase: your hard drive or SSD, your processor, and your memory (RAM). All modern computers come with SSD or m.2 (variation of an SSD) drives. Stay away from standard platter-based, mechanical hard drives for direct recording - the performance is significantly slower and will stutter on high-track recording sessions (as each track is, essentially, writing an audio file in real time). The more modern of a computer you have, the more capable the motherboard will be to handle faster read and write speeds. You do want to ensure you have enough space. 1 minute of music is about 5 MB of space on your hard drive (could be more or less depending on certain settings). 16 tracks across an hour would be 16*60*5, or ~5GB. If you store an hour-long practice and an hour-long performance a week, you'll be using over 100GB in less than 3 months. I'd recommend no less than 256GB, as you always need to have buffer free space on your computer, especially with Windows, but go more if you can. You'll also likely want a backup solution of some sort as well (whether that's in the cloud, a local RAID box, a NAS, or even an external hard drive is your call, but the rule of backups is to have three copies - the original, a local copy, and a remote copy). The cheapest method is just getting a 2 TB or 4 TB external HDD and transfer your project files over, but it'll be slow and it's not a true backup. Most computers come with either 4 or 8 GB of RAM. I honestly wouldn't ever recommend anything less than 8 GB. 4 GB will work in a pinch, but don't try to run more than one application at a time. If you can swing it, go for 16 GB, which will future-proof your laptop for a bit longer. On some (but not all) laptops (reading or watching reviews is key), you can update the RAM later if cost is that much of a concern. If it can be done on your chosen laptop, it's pretty easy to do with a minimum amount of technical know-how. For the CPU, this depends on what you want to do. If you're looking to just record and play back, you can get by on pretty minimal specs. If you're looking to take those audio tracks and add audio plugins and EQs on everything, you're going to want something beefier. I would stay away from anything "mobile optimized" - usually Intel Celeron or Intel M (M for Mobile) - as these are designed to handle very basic computing tasks and that's it. I'd look at either Intel i5 or i7 laptops or AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 as the best "performance for the buck" processors. Intel i9 and AMD Ryzen 9 is overkill if you're only using it for simple recording, and they're also the most expensive. You could get by on a AMD Ryzen 3 or Intel i3, but, like the RAM, going a little faster will help your computer perform optimally for longer (more cost now for lesser cost later). Hope that helps. There's tons of guides out there on this very subject just a Google search away if you want to find out more or get some specific suggestions.

Sorry for the delayed reply, this got stuck in a weird "review" location in YT. The gain on your console will control the preamp level. This preamp could be the local one in the console or (if you are using the DL32) in your stage box. Regardless, your input channel will be sourced by a preamp (based on routing) and the gain will control that specific preamp. Once you have your gain set properly, you can set your routing that goes out the card and into your DAW. The signal will get tapped just after the preamp and be sent out USB into your DAW for recording. Note that the level coming out of the board (even when set to -12 on the input meter) will still seem small in the DAW. If you plan to do any post production work with these recording you will usually need to bump them up by 6-10dB per channel.

@@AllamHouse I use studio one and I thought that when the routing from the x32 is set, and the input and output sources are set in the daw to “X-USB” it will automatically send all those channels through the DAW, as long as the right amount of tracks is set up in the DAW. Or am I completely wrong?

Unfortunately, it is not automatic. You need to go into Song > Song Setup > Audio I/O and manually do the routing within the matrix window. This video here shows some of the setup matrix window in StudioOne and it might be helpful to you. There is a quick link in the description to jump to the 13:44 mark. You will also need to select your channels in the DAW to go back out the ‘sub group’ which will get it to go out USB and back to the console. So what’s the point of using the Matrix? It seems like an extra step with no purpose. Can the routing to an audio program go back to the board to provide an altered advanced EQ audio to a bus? We want more than just the 5 EQ wave bands; and more like 10, going through an audio program (Studio One 4).
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
Based on the video you watched, I’m not sure about your reference of a Matrix being used. In reference to your other question about using the DAW as an alternate FX processor, it is possible. Typically the transmission across USB, computer processing and back across USB adds too much latency, but it does work. I have done it in the past with Waves Multirack on the FOH console (not a monitor console) in a venue where my stage was pretty far from the first row of people. This masked the latency and everything worked fine. Studio One could work if you are only using stock plugins as they will require less processing power, but you still have to be cautious with the latency. I do have a video talking about how to do this setup, but it is more for using different FX (reverbs and delays) in your DAW on buses and not for individual channels. That video can be seen here kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2fHp56DmcSno9k

@@AllamHouse Okay so your recommended video covers a large portion of what we were trying to do. I do question if that’s really the best idea for us, after you mentioned latency. Ultimately, we’re trying to get the x32 to a DAW program (for independent EQ and more advanced FX work) and then send that audio to our live stream: by going to a BlackMagic ATEM mini Extreme _____(?) device which has a 3.5mm audio port. That then goes to a different computer to our livestream on Restream internet website. IF the audio can be heard from the Studio One DAW (that you showed how to connect), then we should be able to connect that computer 3.5mm port to the ATEM mini device audio port. Theoretically? 🥲

If you want to capture the AUX channels into TracksLive you can either route a block of inputs through the normal USB routing area OR through the custom User Outputs area. It just depends on how many inputs you are running standard to determine how many extra channels you have available to map your AUXs to.

Last night I recorded the band but I noticed the custom settings are not been sent to studio one . If you know how to solve this issue I will gladly appreciate it. Quick example channels 19 and 20 are in the local channel 23 is in local too they didn’t come thru. Everything else did.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 жыл бұрын
I would first look at the routing setup on the X32 in Routing>Card and make sure you don’t have any odd user settings that are making you miss channels. Also, check to make sure your input routing is not changed as you might be pulling an input from a different channel on stage, but not making that change in the DAW. Lastly, I always start with a basic 1 to 1 mapping in my DAW so that I know that will grab everything I send it. Check the routing map in the DAW to make sure everything is checked and turned on. Now, in terms of FX (EQ, Comp, etc) on the x32... none of that gets recorded into the DAW since the signal comes across USB just after the preamp.

I’m not really sure I understand the issue fully, but it is hard to say without watching it happen. The console does offer the ability to setup have different input for a channel regardless of the “fader number” that is listed in the order on the board. There is also different routing capabilities within the card outs, card returns, and in a DAW (if you are using that to record). I do offer private consultations in case you would find that helpful. Short answer... yes. It will take a little prep work on the routing in and out of your DAW and X32, but it is certainly possible to do it. First, Studio One does not come with sample multitracks. You will want to setup to record from your band, or find some in other places online. Second, it seems like you are deep into routing and I hope this might help explain it a little bit. You have audio coming in from sources (mics, guitars, etc) and those will get routed on the input tab of the routing page. On this same page, you can have a different setup to play back your tracks from a computer into the board for you to remix. This is separate from any livestream you might be sending through your AUX bus. Then you can page over in the routing page and get to the Card Out section. This is where you need to understand the current goal OR make one situation that could work most of the time. To Record, you need to have your sources mapped to go out 1-32 and you should have an extra 8 that could be mapped to your AUX bus to allow you to record that audio as well. Then, when you playback, you will have to route the recorded AUX bus to some actual faders. Tracks Live is the easiest way to setup/capture tracks 1-32. Studio One will be an additional layer of routing to have to learn and coy get way of teach/training

I can only remember patching things "the right way" on the X32 (setting all my input channels to Card 1-32) and when I pressed play it played back on my system extremely loud; I thought the speakers were going to blow up. Ever since that, Ive been afraid to try this again. Is there anything you didn't explain that we should make sure to do (prior to pressing play)? Or do you think there is something I might of done wrong? I use an X32; I use Logic Pro X and have a bunch of plugins on every single channel (including the master buss).
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 жыл бұрын
My initial guess is that the plugins were turned on and increasing the level that was sent back to your console. This would produce a potential for clipping on every channel and lighting things up like a Christmas tree. 😂. In my example I have no plugins on my channels and the signal is set to 0dB that is being sent back to the console... a direct copy/replay in the DAW. To rebuild your confidence (after turning off your plugins), turn your master fader down, hit play and slowly raise it to a desired listening level.

@AllamHouse 3 жыл бұрын
When you are doing the recording part, Logic will be recording the audio that comes in on any track you have recorded. When you swap the console inputs to USB, you should be able to run the recordings (in a 1 to 1 line up) through your console as if there are people playing instruments... they just happen to be recordings. All the features of the console will be functional and the mix will go out your mains to your speakers. The idea is that you can record and then immediately push back through the console and not have to change anything outside of the routing.

Are you just doing a 2-track off the top thumb drive? I’ll probably make a video out of this soon because it is a great topic. The top usb drive doesn’t render the recording into a wave file until you hit stop recording and I’m pretty sure after 11 hours it’s bot going to do well on that rendering. My choice would be to use a computer and a DAW with an external (or sizeable hard disk) that you could setup your desired record output (MixBUS, Main L/R, etc) to go out the X-USB and into the DAW. You get the stability of the computer to manage the recording and typically a DAW will do auto-save throughout the event. If you are doing a multitrack setup… good luck. I usually record my 1.5 hour service with 22 tracks and this tracked up about 13GB. If you extrapolate that across 11 hours, that’s a lot of space.
