The game wasn't at all finished on release, and should have been in early access. I remember thinking something was broken with all the random missing descriptions on things in the in-game encyclopedia. The main questline abruptly just came to an end immediately, and the entire (tiny) research tree was just an arbitrary "wait x minutes", with the duration just copy pasted for every tier. Zero need for any sort of materials - just an arbitrary amount of waiting, in a game where time barely matters. Not to mention investing all the time you spent building up a fleet, just to finally learn the AI was complete garbage and get zero payoff for that whole playthrough-spanning effort. (Formations would never be kept, random ships would just not enter cruise mode and be stuck across the whole map, large ships would just suicide into stations like fighters despite being able to completely outrange them from a safe distance - and if you tried to manually make them do that, they'd just start chasing some random fighter and ignore your orders anyway. And that's just off the top of my head, there were plenty more frustrating, barely functional mechanics.) The community certainly loved to make up excuses for everything though. I remember some idiot telling me it was ~a lot of work~ to fill in all the encyclopedia entries, and that Egosoft would, believe it or not, have to actually pay to get them localized into the other languages they support. Wow, no shit, the developers have to actually expend time and money to develop this game they're selling for $50? The same person proceeded to tell me there was nothing stopping me from making a mod and personally filling in the rest of the entries myself. What a very reasonable expectation that anyone who paid for "finished" product should have to do.

I absolutely love the game and its depth. The entire X series has been fantastic right from the start. Heck, even the less favored X Rebirth (where they were upfront about it being essentially a massive engine overhaul with a game added on top at release, which was then refined and enhanced over the years post release) turned out great in my opinion. It's rare to find developers these days whom I still have confidence in. Good video

My personal list of contenders for such games/developers would probably be approx in descending order from best to least best (though I like them all, and I actually have combined 9000 hours in the latter 3 games, versus less than 200 hrs in the top two games): BeamNG, Project Zomboid, Rimworld, Arma, Space Engineers. I feel like StarSector might also qualify, though I don't have that game. I actually like that some of these games subvert the "endless early access hell" paradigm to instead make an entirely playable game that just endlessly improves without bothering itself with such trifles as official 1.0 release dates. :D

X4 is my dream game, is the one i keep imagine how would it should improve over time, and how amazing just is to be there, the emergent gameplay of X4 is one of the most amazing things i saw over my 25 years playing videogames, just the amazing spetacle that it is watching fleet battles alone is worth the price. One of the first times i was amazed by this game, i was in an Holy Order space station with a war raging on outside, at some point and argon behemoth cross in front of the sun casting is massive shadow over the station, i couldn't barely belive once i look up to see, and all of sudden evething explode... game over apperead on my screem. i restart the game again an this time i didn't loose any time and rushed to my ship, just in time to see the docking area of that station blew up again. This is how amazing is X4, i have 5k hours playing this game, and i have many more stories like this playing this game, is one of the few games, where i trully immerse myself on the character, be a captain of a trader ship, crossing a dangerous region of space,, or an admiral doing though choices, in order to save the fleet... X4 is in some ways, similar to a Bethesda game, where you can be a lot of things, the difference is that in whatever role you are playing, you do make the difference, you can clearly see what is going on if you isn't there to steer the ships to safety (or sometimes create a mess), different from an Elder Scrolls game though, you aren't a mage a aprentice who all of sudden becomes the head of the mages guild... no, you are you, you already is the head of your faction, you are the guy who start like the smallest worm in space, and through sheer effort, becomes the more important person in the galaxy, and how you would go about the galaxy itself, is what matters, again, in X4 you can see the results of your interference as your lack of interference, if you decide to help a faction in need, you can clearly see that your help did manage to turn the tide, at the same time you can see the after effects of not helping a faction, and amazingly enough, the effects may not always be the same.

@@Psykeeper993 here i can say, the UI is what trully hinders X4, but at least Egosoft is trying to minimize the problem you can clearly see they add a radial ship function dialogue menu, wich helps a bit.

you might find a youtube series to help at least find some questlines to follow, or else just focus on doing some trading, then buying another ship and pilot and learn (YT) to set them to trade for you, watch the money go up a bit, buy another one, etc... things grow on you, etc. Also, mods help, especially for me those who enhance the gameplay, or add shops, or enhance the AI.

Learning curve is harsh but coming back and forth to a X game makes me learn it. The thing that is throwing me off with the X series is the light ship piloting and the UI that both feels off

because it's not deep at all. it's shallow as hell. it just looks difficult due to lack of tutorials. I run away from complex games, as I have no time to invest into learning them and I learned X4 quite fast with a few You Tube tutorials and some short reading on forums / wiki.

Happy to see them focus on new player onboarding. One of the Hardest things about X3 was learning how the heck to play! I avoided X4 because I saw a ton of mixed reviews on the game at the time, but it looks like they're really putting work in to make the game better. Might have to give it a look again.

for me the problem with the game was lack of content and poor optimization, but overal it was an improvement over X3 even on release. I think people were only pissed with it for the fact that they were exepecting more refinement, forgeting that egosoft is barely a AA studio. it's unquestionable that the game got A LOT better with the years though, but it still has huge problems (like the terrible AI), however now 7.0 should bring a lot of things that were still missing, including some improvements to the AI.

@@123pa1n perhaps complex is a wrong word. x3 was difficult becaues of menus. however, in x3 you had to take notes and remember stuff. various ship categories which mattered (instead of simple S, M,L) , tons of missiles, actually upgrading ships (cargo space, systems...) and finding where the upgrades are (in X4 you can't miss, just go to any wharf or equipment bay) etc. these are the first which come to mind, haven't play x3 in a long time, but i know i was uncomfortable, feeling small and insignificant even after playing for a while and in X4 I learned everything quickly and felt like a grown up in a children's sandbox

It's still probably one of the best games in my steam library and have had many hundreds of hours in the same save since it came out. Almost wiped out the HOP while the attacks from xenon are getting heavier and heavier so have been fighting wars on two fronts. (Their capital ships seem to be getting larger and more powerful and cause some serious sector disruption when they come thru the gate). Have built around 8 massive stations and production chains which generate millions every couple of minutes which support many large fleets. The hardest thing about this game is the deep learning curve and you just have to push through, some fantastic KZbin guys out there though to help you though. Can't recommend @TheRuggedGamer enough.

@GenXBrethren Distant Worlds Universe and its sequel Distant Worlds 2 are like that, where entire economies are simulated. While its scope is different since you're playing as an empire rather than a single individual, it has the same kind of deep economic simulation as the X franchise. You can establish a pre-FTL empire with nothing but a single construction ship and a couple scout ships, explore your home system and nearby systems and look for valuable resources, and watch as your empire's citizens purchase and build their own private mining and transport ships to ferry the resources you discovered around your empire as it slowly gets built up. It's not abstracted like in Stellaris or other games, you can actually see the ships moving around, collecting and transporting resources. It's worth a look if you've never played Distant Worlds.

as a really old x series enjoyer who pretty much knocked out the whole story mode and ended up building my own completely self sustained mega huge factory that makes everything from ship parts to foods and every other commodity in a little over 180 hours in the game, i cant wait to see what this new update is about. really exciting stuff. thanks for the video, would not have found out other wise. def gona give this game another visit

tbh ui isn't an issue for me, but the AI is. I just wish they make out of sector combat and in sector combat behave the same, ships doesn't block eachother all the time, and when set in formation, faster smaller ships would keep up with larger slower ships

The main drawback to x4 is the long station build times. Even a station with a dock, storage, and energy cell will take around two hours. Unfortunately materials are the bottleneck

Have in mind this game has a very hard and steep learning curve, it's not the sort of game you would master with 20 hours of gameplay... in fact, 20 hours of gameplay in X4 is nothing, i myself have 5k hours playing this game, i know some folks with 8k, 10k hours, and you can only fully judge X4 if you have at least some 100 hours playing it. Here's a good tip, sometime is worth to let the sim running while you would go work, or sleep, not something should do at the begining of the game, but at some point, you would know WHEN to do it!

Thanks for the distillation of Egosoft's notes on this, as well as your brief takes on these points, @OA. - Since it is on a decent discount, I'm taking the plunge - they mention improvements to the AI for player-controlled fleet vessels, which seems to be the biggest persistent bug-bear for a lot of people. Reading comments here and elsewhere, I see the player's NPC ship crews still need to be leveled-up a couple of notches before they start taking sensible paths. - Will see what form the improved tutorials take. I tried X3 a while back (having enjoyed X2), but found that the tutorials vs somewhat opaque learning curve didn't compel me to progress beyond a few hours.

The main thing I hope they fix is the stupid mining ship AI. My miners always have a hard time finding ore, and mining it even though there’s tons of it around them. They just fly in circles and do nothing for hours until I pilot it, drive them into the center of a mining area and then hand it back to the captain who might mine for a few minutes and go back to circles… it’s one of the reasons I stopped playing it because they are just totally stupid and I have to babysit them all the time and I can never make enough money to expand my empire if they won’t mine and make me money…

I played the original X way back when I was a young man. I tried to get into 4, but found the UI and menus a bit of a barrier - so I defo agree with you on that! Also, I play on PC using a controller, so additional support/profiles, along with new tutorials may just tempt me to give it another go. Had the same issue, Restarted with Terran empire and they had an easier trading network, so it was easier to get into the ropes and get started. And they have quite strong ships as well.

yeah for me X3 only clicked when some friends explained to me what the game was actually about, so when I picked up X4 I kinda knew what to look for already, and only had to figure out how the commands and UI worked. the biggest problem with the game is not even the lack of decent tutorial, is how the new player experience is very frustrating if you are not already experienced with the game and know all the tricks and shortcuts. there are WAY too many things to do at the beginning, and quests have some very frustrating barriers that will require you to find better ships or make more money before progressing. normal quest are also all over the place, and some can straight up be impossible to complete without tools and mechanics new players shouldn't even know exist in the game yet, meaning there isn't some easy bounties new players can complete to get familiar with the game.

@@danilooliveira6580 yes, i believe you are not allowed to critique something if you haven't thoroughly tested it. even though i haven't play all of the new tutorials, i can guarantee they won't teach you everything or even the majoritiy of crucial things you'll need. luckily enough, it's hard to completely fail in x4, but people abandon the game before they even get into it properly, exactly because it's a really slow game and you have no guidance in the beginning. you are not supposed to watch tutorials, but to incorporate them into gameplay through a mission chain. they have "game starts", but each one of those will end quickly , leaving you with a question "what now?" economy, politics, diplomacy, logistics, trading, flying, combat, space - that's what i love. X has checked all those boxes, so i managed to tolerate it until the end. it could be a fantastic game, but it falls short in almost every aspect, so i can't say it's good just because it falls into genres i like and because i've played it a lot. i enjoyed 10% of the time spend in the game. tons of quality of life mods and some cheats for faster progresson helped, allowing me to basically skip most of the game's elements which i believe are tedious, bad, unnecessary, shouldn't be in the game or should be reworked, as otherwise i would have uninstalled it after a few hours.

The biggest issue i have with X4 is definitely the UI and the lack of a good tutorial. A lot of the time i find myself getting Sensory Overload looking at the UI and Information overload when trying to figure out what i have to do after the Tutorial

I have bought every game since X2 The Threat. Fantastic series. Of all the games I have played over the past 30+ years I have by far the most time spent in the X universe. And now I'm able to play X4 at a steady 55-60 fps with my AMD FX6300 and GTX1060 6GB at 2560x1440!!! Of course I still get the performance hits in the expected areas but hey I technically only have 3 CPU cores...

Great video, I love X4. Would be interested to hear what about the menus you have an issue with. It’s true that it does feel a bit spreadsheet simulator sometimes but there’s so much functionality I can’t imagine any other way to make it work. One small tweak I think would help some people (like me) is the ability to change the font in all those menus, several options to enhance the way everything looks would be great.

Yes. But now they sometimes do silly dance on the spot instead of just staying still and shooting the main calibre. Apparently vanilla weapon ranges are the reason so doesn't happen in mods like VRO.

The new feature that had me the most excited was being able to adjust the FOV. I will finally be able to play the game on my 5120 x 1440 monitor without the fisheye effect.

STEAM said I had played the game for 20HRS. I don't remember any of that. I did return to the game now that I have a better setup and I must be on this "new tutorial system" because I am enjoying it far more than the "sink or swim" gameplay I seem to remember about the first attempt (there was still tutorials, but none integrated into the gameplay and you still got dumped into the open world I feel like). Currently playing the "Stranded" scenario and having a directed adventure for casual players is just so much nicer, especially as one can always "start over" once they get their sea-legs.

Without a doubt, X4 is the best Single player space game. For me, its time to get back to X4 and enjoy it even more after the few months of the "average" or disappointing Starfield.

X4 just keeps getting better. It's similar to NMS in a way because both games launched in a terrible state, but as time went on both games are now just good.

I'm very interested into the AI improvements. Last run (a year ago) I was so tired to see capital ships entering close combat against stations and stupidly get obliterated instead of parking just outside enemy range while fighters attack the station's center of mass (or crashing into it) instead of engaging subtargets... You were able to micromanage it, but it constantly felt dumb that they don't do it themselves. Is any of this fixed nowadays?

Very important questions: those are a few of the aspects that turns this incredible game into a disappointment long term. Others are fighters getting obliterated in out of sector battles, lack of end game, ships taking literal ours to do tasks that take a couple of minutes if done by player, factions that cant be fully destroyed, and so on...

I think the problem is that if you are expecting a "han solo that never met luke" kind of space game you will be disapointed, it is above all else an imperialism simulator, meaning the space questing comes second (and why for me the quests feel like a bit of a chore). it's actually the reason why X3 never clicked for me, I couldn't find the fun in the game. and then some friends that played it for years showed up and explained to me what the game ACTUALLY was all about, teaching me how the more complex systems worked, and it finally clicked. I realized I was just playing Mount and Blade, but in Space.

I hope they update the KI as well... in my last playthrough, my area defence fleet casualy hit a nearby other faction and they went all out war on me dropping my rank with that faction rather quickly... and the gatherer fleet, supposed to supply my shipyards with basic materials... but more than half of them have their holds full with material, that is already maxed in my shipyard. and when i empty them, to reset thier objectives, the come back again with the wrong materials... and the stuff that i need, stays low... the KI definitely needs an update.
