I quit Elite and took a break from space games for a few months, and then I tried X4 and NMS. Been playing those 2 ever since, and would never go back to Elite. The Devs for Elite just dont care and/or arent good at their jobs. too bad, because the core gameplay of Elite is really good, it just isnt enough without meaningful content and continued competent development.

I am a long term fan of the X series and would say, having played about 1000 hours of it, that with X4 Egosoft have made the best one yet by far. It is true, as ObsidianAnt observes, that the UI is not up to snuff and it is also true that X4 has a pretty steep learning curve. Everspace 2 it is not. However the considerable effort required to get to grips with the game is rewarded with hundreds of hours of absolutely compelling gameplay comprising serious space fleet battles, serious space biz empire building and top notch exploration in equal measure. In fact in your first X game the exploration of it's universe blind provides one of the most magical gaming experiences ever created in any genre - resist all temptations to google an X4 map. Highly recommended.

I have them all, and X4 is one of the games I keep installed. The GUI isn't that unintuitive and has come a long long way since X3 and XR. The only thing you can't do is land on the planets but I did buy the dlc because it's vitally important Bernd and the team are supported to develop X5, really looking forward to that. I never play any of the game starts, X Universe is a sandbox and although you can jump onto a dlc driven story at any point, I choose not to as I carve my own empire in the massive universe. Egosoft are modder friendly, mods can be found on the Nexus and steam workshop and they range from smaller convenience mods such as fly by loot and lock boxes, to massive expansions such as XRGSE which completely rearranges the universe and makes the systems incredibly huge that it can resemble Elite at times. To travel in these vast systems you need additional mods for the ship engines. Good to see you give Egosoft a bit of exposure Ant, they definitely deserve it for their love and hard work on the game it hasn't been a bed of roses but this game is unique where you can start with absolutely nothing and build up an empire and command capital fleets for some ncp epic battles of conquest.

Got a review copy of the DLC myself, I've been loving it so far. Especially the story, it's been one of EGOSOFTs best so far I'd say. But it does have some issues with some of the missions and I agree with the UI, it's clunky and difficult to navigate even for veteran players like me who have been playing since X3 Reunion. One of my favorite space games. But EGOSOFT DLCs are always pretty good value for money and well worth buying in general. Game has so much to offer, it's seriously underrated. Glad people like you and Captain Collins are giving it the attention it deserves, more than I ever could. Oh, there's even a surprisingly dedicated modding community, with starwars overhauls, startrek and even stargate ones too.

I would love to see more X4 content. Especially since it's easily the most interesting space game out there. None of the other space games that have come out in the last 5-10 years compares with X at all. Not Elite Dangerous, not the forever unreleased Star Citizen, not Everspace 2... Those games trade content for graphics. Even the next big one coming out, Starfield, still won't have the background economic, political and military simulation that the X games have.

X4 is great but.... political sim? It doesn't simulate anything political or diplomatic. That's one of the few issues I have with the game. Maybe the next DLC fixes that. I'd love to see a fully fledged out diplomatic system integrated into X4.

X4 with drop-in/out multiplayer for friends would be the base of my ideal space game. I don't really need the massively multiplayer aspect of many space games myself. I do like basic ship interiors, AI ship crew, boarding actions, and ownership of functional capital ships and stations though.

Great to see you cover my absolute favorite space-game. This game is a massive time-sink, but it is so worth it. Once you got the hang of it, there is no other experience like this, except for maybe EVE Online, but without all the pvp, the toxicity and without the greed of CCP. 10/10

Having given up on Elite Dangerous (and been addicted to the X series, but avoided X4 on release) I took the plunge into X4 very recently. It's quite janky, but I absolutely love that in a way. The devs have really put a huge amount into the game, so I'm actually really impressed they've been so ambitious. I'm struggling with the UI (even coming from X3) a little bit, but I'm really enjoying it. It lacks a bit of spit and polish, but that's also it's charm as well.

We definitely can't complain (too much), about the variety of space games in recent years. X4 offers depth and allows to realize player's agency in a way no other space game does. NMS is a pretty, relaxing game for a lazy afternoon. Jump into your ship, explore couple of star systems. And Elite Dangerous is... it is. Yes.

We need more of this in space games, especially MMOs. A functioning, tiered, player driven economy, with player owned resources and assets supplemented by hirable npcs. Everyone works their way up from the bottom gathering resources, crafting, and making money. Eventually the resource gathering, logistics, crafting and territory security are left to hirable npcs while players can actually play the game they want: logistics simulator, territory management, rts, piracy, fps, salvaging, exploration, etc. Everyone needs their own piece of the pie to be invested imo: from a single player running a quiet factory on some backwater planet on the fringes of civilized space, to giant warring pvp factions fighting over sectors of space containing dozens of resource rich star systems. That's a game I would buy in an instant.

The X4 UI, once learned, is very powerful. The issue is it is hard to learn for some. To me the UI makes a lot of sense, and I would be deeply disappointed if the UI were trimmed down resulting in me having fewer options for controlling my ships, fleets and stations. If they can get the same level of control while also making the UI prettier and easier to understand, great, but I don't want a dumbed down less functional UI simply because some players don't want to invest the time to learn how to use it.

I guess the best approach would be to add new buttons and functions to the UI as you progress. X4 is great at using story and missions to teach mechanics, it could 'gate' some of those 'spreadsheet-y' overlays and commands behind certain events or tasks.

This is true. When you are truly comfortable with it it's amazing how quickly you can process large amounts of information with keyboard shortcuts managing your empire, your ship, your fleet, your personnel, etc.. That said, there is a lot of room for improvement. Some of the menus have too many sub-menus that are hardly ever used, and quite a lot of the data presentation is too monotone to sort through efficiently. Also, search and filters, while good, aren't quite good enough to cover everything the player may want to do. I could go on, but suffice to say, I really do hope they at some point do some serious streamlining of data presentation/search/management. There's so much room to make some more aesthetic and functional things. It's like playing Excel without graphs or programming; Useful, but limited.

I love the X series so much. It is dripping with lore and you can feel that this is a passion project for the developers. Great video. Yeah I love X4 as well but agree with interface can really become cumbersome. It does have a ton of functionality and allows you to micromanage so many things, I don't know how it could specifically be improved but I wish they could figure something out. The upside to the complex UI is that it's incredibly powerful and granular. And you don't need to "learn" it from day 1 because it'll only be you and your one or two ships usually trading from A-B or mining in sector x or y. The only reasons this shouldn't be a full Elite Dangerous replacement is if you need the strength to be in the flight model or to play in VR. Otherwise it's immeasurably better.

I hadn't known that each new game has a random seed that means that things unfold a bit differently. I'm still with one of my early games that's hundreds of hours in and not sure I'm ready to start again from scratch because I don't want to lose the satisfaction of cleaning out all those Xenon.

been playing all of the X games since the very first one. Considering that they are following the usual "release" tactics with releasing broken games that they then work on patching and expanding. I bought this on release, played it for 10 hours and put it on the shelf. This update might be the one to get me back into the game to get some good content. :)

I bought X4 and the first 3 DLCs on sale (finally!) and just started my first play (Terran Cadet) last week. It has been a long time since a game triggered such a strong "I Love it and Hate it at the same time" response. Its like a DnD game that has everything you want and is done right, but fails miserably on a handful of things you NEED in order to enjoy it. This has Korean levels of UI (menus within menus within menus) and a lot of headscratching on basic 'how to'. Anyways! I am enjoying it and happy to see an ObsidianAnt vid pop, since I parked my Carrier in ED and never looked back a couple years ago.

Hey I loved X2 as well. I still feel the combat was pretty special, and the pirates, and the meta. X4's UI isn't worse but it has a lot more to do than X2. As someone who's adapted from X2 through till now I can tell you that they do all get better and better with X4 being the best yet (in general). Just take your time and get used to it.

X4 is an amazing game. My one criticism (but its a big one) is that planets in the game essentially dont exist except as pretty pictures in the sky box, they cant be visited, landed on or interacted with in any way. Pretty much inexcusable in a modern space game. Other than that one *huge, glaring omission* the game is everything you could possibly want in a space game.... :)

You can actually terraform them but it's a very expensive activity to perform that you are only able to do in the very late game. When you do that, you change not only their appearance but the resources they provide in the sector.

I also skipped the intro video's for Kingdom End and just played. Enjoyed the intro mission line for KE and the fact that it gets you rep to enable useful license purchases quickly and easily (love the ship designs). Now I'm done with that and thinking about adding some Kingdom End economic engagement to my plan. Thinking at the moment to take over Heretics End so sent a fleet (Asgard/Osaka/Syn - sufficient to losslessly spank anything the Xen can throw at it) to secure it and will start building there once it's stable and I have bandwidth to tackle it. I have a pretty big war chest but Terraforming in Getsu Fune is a huge resource sink. Not sure that's the right way to get tight with the Boron but it seems like a good launching platform. I know resources in the Boron sectors are thin so I'd think that would be a route to profit (been working too closely with the Split maybe). MMO's are pretty boring to me... either you're a nobody in an unchanging universe of nobodies just like you or you're a superhero in an unchanging universe of superheros just like you... so X4 and No Mans Sky are the only games in town for deep space exploration games.

Hope you're feeling better! While the Boron have been my favorite Race since X Beyond the frontier, I'm one of those players who just can't get over the UI. Not sure why. It just stops me from fully getting into X4 as a whole. Gladly Star Citizens Update fiasco seems to come to an end with 3.18.1 being live (despite all the issues this particular patch still has). And while there is still a second wipe ahead with 3.18.2, there is something to look forward to for spacegame fans who like either SC or a space themed multiplayer title.

It's easy to bounce of any X game due to UI changes and orientation. I think you'll find that you don't notice the UI after adapting to it, which is how UI should be. It's not pretty, but it gets the job done and X4 is leagues more interesting and fun than any that have come before.

I had hundreds of hours in X2. Had a self sufficient factory with a fleet of automated traders feeding raw materials in one end and selling finished products from the other. I had more money than I could ever spend and basically 'brat' the game. That was nearly 20 years ago though and I don't know if I have the time or patience to tackle that learning curve all over again So if you're doing any sort of new player guide I'd watch that :)

I actually bought the game now, and initially I was put off by the outdated graphics, but stuck with it and now I'm addicted and can't stop playing... Concerning the UI, I said in another comment, I like it, and I have to correct that to "I love it!". I really wouldn't want it any different. No tiles, no nonsense. The fact that it looks and feels kinda like a development platform really gives the game a more realistic feel for me. Especially because when I'm on the Map screen for example, I can turn away from the screen via mouse-look and it becomes clear that it's actually supposed to be the ingame interface. I really, really wish Elite had a UI like this. No joke. This feels less like I'm playing a game and that's exactly what I want. And keyboard shortcuts in the bindings for everything! This is heaven! And no, I wouldn't compare this game to Elite (or SC). It wants something completely different in my book.

i love this game . even if you have all the money in the universe if the production does not scale. theres no way big ships can be build (dynamic markets) . you can literally bleed factions out of materials. its wonderfull.

Yep the thing that hooked me into X4 was that you can (and most will if they persevere) end up never needing money because everything is made from ores and gasses in game and processed in space stations you build. Apart from those pesky ship blueprints...

Tbf it doesn't run well on any PC. There's no CPU+GPU combination right now that'll keep 60FPS on big battles for example, even at 1080p. The game especially heavy on the CPU side. X4 is undeniably one of the best space games out there, and delivers what a lot of others don't, but Egosoft really needs to work on the performance side for it to be a reliable alternative in the genre.

@@antonioterra5436 As I couldn't get stable 60fps just walking around even at 720p I decided to play it at 1080p with 30fps. But when I had fleets of a few hundred ships the framerate still massively tanked down to 10 - 15 fps even without huge battles. But I guess that was only having 8GB of RAM is probably a major problem too. (And I wish the game had FSR2 support as that is a massive performance game changer. FSR1 kinda sucks.) Will buy the expansion as soon as I have time for it as the game is such a massive time sink. But the game still gave me loads of really awesome moments. One I will always remember is when I bought my first M Class ship, went to the landing pad and though "where the heck is my ship"? Then I looked up and noticed that it was just so huge that I had only seen the landing gear and thought that was part of the station.
