Great video! It took me back 40 years to when I used to hunt with a small group of friends. We each carried a small kit in case someone downed an animal and couldn't make it back to the main camp by night fall. We had what we needed to stay with the animal overnight and no one was worried. Back then we didn't have the fancy stuff available now like titanium pots, etc. Myself, most of my stuff fit into a one pound coffee tin with a wire bail. I always had a few bouillon cubes and a hand full of tea bags and sachets of sugar. A tin cup fit in my coffee tin. A lighter was in my pocket (no ferro rods in those days) and, as a backup in my tin I had wooden matches I had dipped in wax. I carried my tin in a haversack along with a few other items: a small 8 X 10 light nylon tarp; sash cord because we hadn't heard of paracord; always a slab of MacIntosh's toffee (when they still made slabs!); for water, I used an old 1 litre rectangular plastic vinegar bottle; a small flashlight; a compass and extra ammo. Either in my haversack or in a pocket I always had a can of sardines! I always wore a fixed blade knife on one side and a folding Buck 110 on the other, then I had a good pocket knife. I am a little knife crazy but also one of our guys had taken his rifle and gone out one morning to answer the call of nature. When he dropped his drawers he saw a moose, shot it but only wounded it. He trailed after it and, a long time later, found it down. He went to gut it and realised he had not put his knife on his belt when he got up that morning. He bush-wacked back to camp, got his knife and tried to return to the moose. Hours later he still couldn't find it; never did. Lesson learned. Excuse the long-winded tale! I'm 75 and just had a pacemaker implanted 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure my days in the bush are going to be very limited but your video brought back some fond memories from long ago. You're doing a great job, Xander, and I get a vicarious pleasure watching everything you post.

The extra ammo is useful for signaling. The old rule is to fire three shots in the air, wait for a response, then fire three shots again, etc. Of course, eventually you're going to run out of arrows. :-)

Love how you're demonstrating it doesn't take much gear to live/survive a night out. Even in cold weather. Have a friend who loves to day hike. She had a scary hike one time where she got off trail and was afraid she wouldn't make it back to the trailhead and would have to spend at least one night out. She didn't carry much with her expecting just routine day trips. She was so shaken she was telling me she was probably going to stop hiking which she loved. I encouraged her to put together some simple items to carry just for spending a night out if she ever had to. A couple of ways to start a fire, a poncho for weather or shelter, a whistle, paracord, a water bottle and a metal cup, water purification tablets, a couple of energy bars, a headlamp. Add whatever else you like, say a map of the area. Then go someplace you're familiar with, hike out a little way, not far, not so far you couldn't easily walk back to your vehicle even at night. Pick a good campsite and spend the night out with just those items. Do it just to show yourself you can. You'll learn from the experience, most importantly you'll learn about yourself. How to face your fear and anxiety, how to make a better shelter, how to learn that it may not be the most comfortable night ever but it will be rewarding. I also love how you show the most important item to have even if you don't keep it in your container kit. Your attitude. Stay calm, be prepared, keep thinking how to solve problems. Damp icy spruce bows? Simple dry them by the fire. Carry some tape to fix the tear you know will likely happen in the mylar or plastic. Practice these scenarios and your skills and confidence will grow. And if you ever are faced with a situation where you might have to rely on yourself and a few select items you'll already know you can do it. Love how you've done episodes using less and less or more simple gear. Very cool.
