I was not happy, my internet is very slow so even though I purchased the physical game to avoid that, I still had to wait an additional 7 hours. People love to condemn it as something that only damages the industry, but not only does it preserve old games, no. It also makes the community around a game or even a movie or series a lot bigger. A lot of people would have never bought a certain game in the first place, wouldn't have recommended it to other people and wouldn't have talked about it on the internet pushing it through the algorithm. Some come to like the game enough to buy it afterwards. That's a lot of advertisement in the background, and if the person wouldn't have bought the game otherwise, it's basically just profit. Of course there are special cases in which piracy doesn't help. Also, cracked games can't access the public servers, decreasing the stress on those.

Real story: When I bought Dark Souls III for the xbone, I had just moved and had no internet yet. I popped the game in, it installed just fine, but refused to load, kept telling me to activate the game or "insert the original disc" while the original disc was literally in the fucking console. I got so pissed that I slapped my xbone across the top, not as hard as I could but it was a solid slap, and I shit you not the game worked just fine after that.

Frankly, I’m an occasional gamer who doesn’t really care (I’ll play whatever I can get my hands on), but I understand the sentiment. Growing up on the Atari 2800 and through the re-introduction of gaming to the US (thanks Nintendo!), the idea that you can buy a physical game and eventually be unable to play it seems silly. Computer games (pre-GOG), I could understand, as there were always an unending array of compatibility issues to handle when trying to play an old game on a newer computer. But with modern video games systems, it seems like Microsoft is creating problems that shouldn’t exist.
