The only and I mean ONLY video which quickly and accurately (more or less) describes the only REAL issue with replacing the thermal paste on an Xbox one AND THAT IS what condition to put the x clamp back into after you've finally gotten it off.....because NO other video actually talks about the condition to put the clamp back into before replacing......sir.... THANK you lmao. Without going too into it this is almost the MOST important step....it's like an engine tear down video at the end of disassembly going "obviously repeat this process in reverse and you're good" WHILE 95% of normal people are sitting there going yeaaaah I get that obvious bit of con fuckery BUT I had to add 37 extra steps of banging, pulling, torching, praying, changing religions, possibly making a deal with the devil and a beer run BUT I need a NORMAL person to continue the reassembly vid if ANYTHING by going "okay so you probably fucked this and this up annnnd here's how to tweak it back so it works"....you did that. My clamp was WAY out of wack, bent her back like yours ways in the cross reference, reassembled and perfect. Thanks bud, A+

Goo Gone is also excellent to use to remove the old dried gray heat sink compound. Follow it with alcohol to remove residue. I then used a hot air gun to reflow solder on the chip until the visible solder became shiny liquid and let it cool off without bumping it for an hour, just in case the excessive heat had caused micro-gaps in the chips internal solder connections (due to the low melting point solder they sometimes use in Xbox 360). Then replaced the gray heatsink compound with the white type Z9 silicone heat sink compound from GC electronics. After reassembly, no more screen freezing up. Works fine now. By the way, I made my own Xclamp removal tool and it worked great. Just as good as the official Xclamp removal tool.

How well does the fan spin? Use your hand to give the internal fan a spin. If it is tough for the fan to move then the fan might need to be replaced. When the fan is needed to cool the console, it takes more power for it to spin because the bearing inside is bad, so the console shuts down to protect

Andrew Paul, so you don't have to spread the paste evenly on the surface before setting the heatsink? I work with 1200A IGBTs. We have to spread the thermal paste evenly on the IGBT with a roller before installing on the heatsink. As you said in your video, it only needs a small layer of paste.
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
No mate - once the clamp is reinstalled and screwed down then it'll distribute itself evenly across the die. The only tip is to make sure both the die and heatsink surface are completely cleared of old paste.

the idea of the bolt kits on the 360 was to force the gpu down thus bridging the faulty solder joints via compression. but yes you are right it was a poor mans band aid
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
Yeah that was the theory. Most often though it was down to internal silicon faults within the flip chip BGA which is why so many re-occurred shortly afterwards. Most people just carried on torquing it down and torquing it down though - then removed the washers and ruined the board when all that was needed was a replacement GPU. I don't miss the 360's lol.
@mattisafool7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Paul i didnt realise the gpu itself was faulty i was under the impression that the heatsink was inadequate and due to the thermal cycling you got "tin whiskers" or whatever they are called thus a reball with good old 60/40 would solve your problem long term. cheers. good videos btw!
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
No sadly not - the heat sink and inadequate cooling was partially to blame as it essentially just 'cooked' the BGA but by the time you saw RROD it was usually too late for that GPU BGA.
@krystoffersprague61003 жыл бұрын
Actually I bought a 360 with 3 RROD lights, a thermal paste kit that had tools, bolts, washers and plastic washers for the board to replace the X-clamps, citrus oil to remove the leftover paste residue and a weblink for any help. Didn't need the help BUT it fixed the RROD issue, code 73 if I remember right for the GPU issue where is would either throw the code OR flash lines that were actually the compressed graphics or lines throughout the screen with odd colors. After the fix I played Halo 4 for hers straight BUT the real test was Battlefield 4 for 4 hrs. After moving we lent it to a buddy whose had it running for 3yrs now with little kids that watch tv with it, no gaming and not a single issue. My XB1 has had trouble running one game and it had a high revved fan for about ten secs. Took it apart to a lot of dust which seemed to fix the issue BUT I may do the thermal paste since it is over 4yrs old, 2 of which wasn't my unit. Thanks for the easy and concise vid, keep you posted as to my progress IF it ends up being a paste problem.

My only complaint was the piercing fire alarm sound in the background. But how do i get the x clamp back on.
@AndrewPaul3 жыл бұрын
If you look on the legs of the heatsink, you'll see some notches. Take the X-Clamp and slide the hook into one of the notches on any leg. Then manoeuvre the clamp into position so you can push it down over the opposite leg to the one you've previously hooked on. It should click onto the leg, seating into the notch. Repeat for the other two legs - it can be fiddly, just don't be tempted to force it. If it's troublesome, bend the legs of the clamp out very slightly which can help.

Andrew Paul Thanks Andrew. Is it worth replacing the thermal pads too? I’ve read mixed opinions on that and the risk of getting some that stop the heat sink properly seating? Also is it worth replacing my fan with the Nidec one, I’ve read it’s meant to be more quiet then the Delta ones, I don’t know which one I have yet but presume the Delta one going by the noise it makes! Sorry for all the questions.
@THE-YAYAY6 жыл бұрын
How do I know if it is my fan that needs replacement or my heatsink, or if I also need a thermal paste replacement?
@AndrewPaul6 жыл бұрын
The heatsink is a solid piece - there's no reason to need to replace that unless it's physically broken. Again though, not sure how you'd do that considering it's a fairly substantial piece of aluminium. If you've had the heat sink off then you should always replace the thermal compound as part of the procedure. If the fan is noisy or no longer spins then replace it. Otherwise just do the paste and you should be fine.
@THE-YAYAY6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Paul, I think you're right, I should just replace the fan cause the inside of the fan smells a little like burning
@ignacioortiz14453 жыл бұрын
Is it normal that the heatsinks moves a very very little at sides?
@AndrewPaul3 жыл бұрын
It should be pretty solid to be honest. If the x-clamp legs are tight to push on and located in the slots on the heatsink legs then it should be fine.
@justinkadow13426 жыл бұрын
Andrew Paul, how long does it take for the thermal compound to dry?
@AndrewPaul6 жыл бұрын
It largely depends on usage and conditions your console is kept in. With good airflow around the unit and average use I'd say you're good for 2 years before it starts going a bit crusty.

@manuelruen7 жыл бұрын
use an air compressor with a blow gun and blow out the heat sink and fan. try to hold the blades so the blow gun doesn't spin it too fast an mess up the bearings or what not. and i guess if you wanted; you can use ipa on a q-tip on the fan blades if you were ocd about it. if you decided to use an air compressor and blow gun on the motherboard itself to get the dust off you need to turn the pressure down because high air pressure can create static electricity. you can buy anti-static duster cans but its just not worth the money imho. i'm not paying $10 a can when i got an air compressor.

Ah ok. My Xbox One has started to switch off (like if you pull the plug out) after 8-10 mins of gaming. It was fine a few days ago playing on it around 2 hours daily - then 1 day I played on it for about 5 hours straight - it is in a well ventilated spot. Power up & browsing through home screens/store is fine, no issues any length of time. When I game, it switches off after 8-10mins, psu led goes red, then orange, most times it starts up again, sometimes not. I followed your procedure, existing paste was dried out, applied new MX4 but no change :-( Do you think it is wasted or a psu issue?

Try a friends PSU if you can, failing that it could well be APU related.

Turns out it was the capacitors in the replacement chinese psu that came with it - replaced & now runs fine.

Hello so my xbox one turned off my itself yesterday will downloading a game I've had it since I was in middle school now I'm a graduate. It's never happened before until now. I try to turn it on and only last 15 or 20 seconds with the light on but it never connects with the tv I see and hear the fan spinning but it turns off after 15-20 seconds. Is this one of the solutions that could help my problem with the xbox one? I opened the xbox to clean it and it wasn't that dirty. Is this one of the solutions that I must do that will help my xbox one?

I did this to mine and it didn't fix it, it turns on the fan twitches then it turns off...

Hi, that's a whole different problem. Could be a power regulation problem caused by a blown FET or voltage regulator, liquid damage or a bad Southbridge / APU issue.
