Actually you'll find it's not that swappable, the new shell doesn't fit on the old pad, so the D-Pad isn't as swappable as it looks.

Been using this guide for a while to clean my controller. Today I had to disassemble it almost entirely as the A button was starting to be sticky and not as tactile as the others. After a little trouble (screw stripped requiring me to use some pliers and some troubleshooting with the battery) I'm glad to say my controller feels fine again! We love easily serviceable products. Thanks a lot for the great guide!

Beautiful guide, you sir are quite the instructor. I had a sticky "A" button and I was able to open up the controller and without soldering the back board because I don't have a kit I was able to still remove the main board and clean the button. Slapped that boy back together and we up and running brand new. Chef's kiss.

Rafay Nadeem I disagree they saved the consumer $50 easily by having backward compatibility for older controllers. That $ can be saved for gamepass or for physical games that will come out over time.

D-pad is not interchangable, if you look at the Series S/X D-pad, it's one whole piece while the One-type controller is a cross. It will leave a huge gap on the sides, allowing dust and grime easy access into your controller.

@@velumanisakthivel221 I think this is a good thing. Most xbox players don’t want a drastic change. The only thing the Dualsense has that I’d want is the adaptive Triggers and 3D rumble. I bet Microsoft will do this in a few years.

I have a 3 week old xbox series x wireless controller and it is a xbox brand. And it wont turn on. It worked fine 4 hours prior. No water damage hasnt been abused or dropped. I have tried new batteries and plugging in a cord from the controller to the xbox and still wont turn on. Any advice you could give would be great.

@@cdawg42 give the battery contacts a good cleaning with isopropyl and make sure they are not corroded. If that doesn’t work you will need to open up the controller and check for any damage

I was tired of my current controller so when I got one that was better I came back to this one and thought it would be fun to dismantle it. I have learned that I have been nearly dismantling it my entire use time as I would stick sharp things in the sides of the covers to get all the dirt out.

Yeah, those initial covers are strangely way harder to get off than the Xbox One versions. It looked identical to me, but yet I had to use way more force than I thought would have been necessary to open the Series controller. (I already took my controller apart to remove the rumble motors. 😁 I hate rumble, so I always turn it off, which just makes the motors annoying dead weight. I prefer removing them and having a lighter controller.)

Having fixed a fair number of Xbox one controllers, found that in the great majority of cases, they had drift issues. This is a relatively simple fix - the small circular 3 pin resistor discs that are on the x and y axis, or, in other cases, new Alps pots (although this means more soldering). Now, if the controllers were made to a more modular design, there would be a lot less hassle - if the discs and pots could fit onto the board and be held in by some kind of bracket that lets them be switched out when they inevitably wear out. Like an IC socket but with a retainer clip. Also, those Torx security screws are a complete PITA to anyone that hasn’t got those screw bits. Not as big a PITA as replacing the top middle section of an Elite series one controller, though - those things are a nightmare!!

Made getting those first 2 plates off look easy as hell, took me forever to do it 🤣 Apparently the rubber bit had come up after years of use, and the glue became exposed causing the trigger to stick when I would hold it down for extended shooting and mining. Took the rubber bit out and wiped away the glue, then lightly scraped the bits of glue that wouldn't come out off, then went back for a follow-up wipe with the qtip. Was annoying as hell trying to tap fire too in Halo. It is all good now tho thankfully

ty, all i needed were the first few seconds, all middle buttons were somehow semi-stuck, a bit of window-cleaner and a q-tip and its done. ill watch the whole video still though bc it helped me.

Glad you’re making this video. When I got my series X I had to RMA the controller that came with the console due to a faulty y button. Then the one that came separately initially had an unresponsive left bumper but I somehow got it to work by pushing down on it a few times.

Jan 2022: Very helpful video. Managed to use a 2mm wide flat bladed precision screwdriver instead of a Torx bit. Will lock itself offset between the security point and the inside edges of the screw head.

I am not actually watching this video as I will never buy an Xbox or repair one, but wanted to give my input on the repairability videos you have been making. They don't get anywhere near as many views as compared to your other random fix big batch of electronics (switches, PS4's etc) but these types of repairability videos are so important for people that want to know how to repair the new tech coming out. Had my headphones jack snap off inside! This helped me perfectly remove the headphone jack and use a pin head to shimmy out the broken bit! Thanks so much

@@danielshannon5006 took it apart and back together with zero damage. I have experience with repairing electronics and taking things apart tho. So just make sure you put things together in the same order you take them apart. I didn't have to completely disconnect the top and bottom motherboard because the headphone jack isn't soldered into the board. It's got a metal contact point. So once you unlatch the top motherboard, the headphone jack will basically fall out. I used a thin safety pin to jostle the broken end of my headphone jack out of the port.

@@danielshannon5006 yeah it was a brand new Xbox series X red and white controller too lol. In the end, the fix took me all of 15 minutes to fully figure out. I'd suggest buying an electronics screwdriver kit. I have like 80 magnetic tips that interchange into my screwdriver.

Good video. But you didn't show disassembly if the shoulder/triggers. Mine has the typical "right/left shoulder button doesn't work. From your basic disassembly I can tell that the little plastic plunger/stand has broken. @@benhurmorales3216 You can't - The shells are different. The Series shell has the cutout for the share button, the One shell does not, so the one shell wouldn't fit. There's also other differences - some One controllers don't go up around the Xbox button at all, and the ones that do have a different shape than the Series controller.

I’m curious why the headphone jack is loose on the Series controller? I have 4 of them and they are all loose when plugged in. Is this intentional? Great video thanks👌

I'm really not sure. EDIT: I know why they are loose...I don't know their reasoning in making them that way. They are loose because there is no solid physical connection. They just use spring contacts. That's why they're loose.

I do agree it is strange, I even bought the last 2 I have at Walmart and GameStop to see if The 1st I got was a bad batch from Best Buy but nope, every single one from 3 different stores and the Series X stock controller all have this problem in my case

Edit: I learned to repair my controller. I've soldered quite a few bumper buttons (and other components) on a 360 and One controller for many years. For my One controller, the RB button always gets worn first, but it's also difficult to track down replacement parts that aren't cheap trash that will wear out quickly. Eventually, I accidentally ripped off the through hole traces of my One's controller board and don't have the skill to repair it. The trace is so tediously thin on this controller. I never had problems replacing 360 bumper switches. It's frustrating and I don't want to give Microsoft any more money, especially given how inflated the prices have gotten. That said, it's nice to see that in the Series controller's board, the solder joints are now by themselves, far away from extremely tiny resistors, capacitors, or other components. Also, the traces seem to be more embedded in the board so maybe it would lower chances of damage when soldering? Anyway, thanks for the vid. Nice, clean, and to the point. It's funny, now that I know more than I've ever wanted to know about controllers' internals, that's all I care about when considering buying new controllers and watch disassembly videos to look at the boards. Someone really needs to design and manufacture better components with stronger materials for these things, but it's not profitable.

That series controller looks identical to the xbox one controller I have (the second version that could use normal bluetooth rather than MS's specific dongle for PC). The texture on the grips and the full front face plate are exactly the same, just the extra button and the dpad. Other than those two things, did MS do anything new to the controller at all?

Question... you mentioned the two black wires going down were antennae. When I lifted the left wire, the mount came disconnected from the board instead of unplugging like it should... now the controller keeps losing connection at random. This an easy solder fix?

Thanks for this. I tried to repair a drifting controller, but I couldn't get the wires connecting the two motherboards back on. I think I pulled from the metal tabs and bent them. Probably needed to pull from the wires as you did.

Is there anyway to upgrade the joysticks yourself on the controller? Not just a replacement of the same joysticks with no drift, but a completely different upgraded joystick that works with Xbox controllers? I hate that all my Xbox controllers have drift in at least one of the joysticks.

The texture on the grips was introduced with the 1708 controller, same as no separate element over the xbox button. I wish you had compared the new controller to that one, instead of an older revision.

Don't know if you did this for the camera, but the Dpad latch for the xbox one controllers can be disengaged from the bottom. I only bring this up because my first fix was an XB1 controller and I almost destroyed the little clip.

What's the additive your using in the syringe to desolder? I got a solder/sucker heat gun but some of the connections on the joystics won't get lose maybe heat gun isn't getting quite hit enough but others come out clean.
