Xbox Series X: Unreliable/Terrible Blu-Ray player

My Xbox played movies fine in the first few months of December 2021. 5 months ago I noticed movies were having issues playing on my Xbox such as black screen with audio playing in the background. it's frustrating and annoying. the $500 device is having issues playing movies. playing video games works perfectly. I prefer a physical media for the extra detail of movies and I have a huge collection of physical media but I can play it on my Xbox because it provides an inconsistent movie experience. as of right now, I couldn't find any solutions to fix this issue despite going through forums and through the Xbox Twitter.

I actually never had an issue on my One X and one of the major reasons I upgraded from Series S to Series X was to play blue rays again. Well it's almost April 2023 and I couldn't even get past 2 movies without issues. I'm very disappointed because I passed up buying a standalone player based on my previous experience with the One X.

@@zapdosmtr4961 I was able to get it working by going to settings/devices & connections/blue-ray and unchecking 'let my receiver decode audio'

I had this same issue, from more expert users online ive heard its all to do with the laser unable to properly read the lower layers of a 100gb disc. That being said ive also come across issues with more boutique brands also not playing(kino lorber and criterion) and when i can get some 100gb disc to work there obvious black crush

I read that certain movies are on 100gb discs but I played a few of them the past no issue until 1 year ago where the screen went black on all my movies. Now I use the Sony x700 blu ray player, sorry Xbox you done.

Good job i kept my years old fully functional Xbone. My series x won't recognise anything on blu ray now.

Sad. I got the wireless headset with Atmos and very few games take advantage of it. Movies are no longer an option.

I have the same problem with only one 4k movie, every other blu ray and 4k blu ray there is no problem at all. I hate this so much. I tried everything, from resetting, to soft reset, hard boot, tweak the settings, nothing. Also with this movie, when i took out the disc and then put it back in sometimes it sounds different, that it should be loading, you can hear that, sometimes it.sounds like it rlly does not know what disc it is. Its definetelx not a faulty laser or the Drive, cant be, because every other disc works fine, from cd, dvd to blu ray and 4k.

Same here. It was perfect for the first 8 months then bam! Almost all my movies turn black screen with audio. It's shame.

My Xbox One S flat out refuses to play most DVDs. I have 16 DVDs, and out of all of them, only 4 of them will play.

My series x play good dvds with no problem 4k and blu rays never had a problem with it at all

I read the 4k player on PS5 is better in video quality compared to the XSX. Im glad you are in the return window.

Frustrating. My 30 dollar bluray player works better than the XBox Series X. Xbox needs to fix this issue, otherwise I see plenty of disc based folks headed back to Sony.

The Software is faulty it's just as bad on the One X I'm getting a cheap Blu Ray player to use as a backup

I have a Sanyo 4k player which good to my eyes. I hope to upgrade to the Sony UBX 700 player in the future.

​​@@Lucky_9705No, it doesn't. The xbox series x has a better dvd bluray player because it has the ability to play music cds The PlayStation 5 doesn't have that ability, so the Xbox is better. Bluray player than the PlayStation 5.
