VK nice video - Thanks. I was mentally comparing the total distance you travelled at your average speed of 60 km/hr and with my V40 D4 at 100km/hr I would still have 75% of fuel in the tank. I suppose the PHEV vs. ICE vehicles debate is going to be an on going one. I very much understand the rationale to go green, however the inconvenience and limited infrastructure, particularly in developing countries may not quite be palatable yet.

Nice review, congrats! Damn, it seems to me freezing temperatures really kill the range, not only battery efficiency, but also winter tires, the extra power to endure the snow, the sliding, etc. In the state of the art EV are more indicated to tropical climates. Cheers!
@volvo_kristian
@volvo_kristian 6 ай бұрын
Yeah definitely. Cold weather and the connecting high climate usage really kills the range.
@bernardrr
@bernardrr 6 ай бұрын
Cold weather and snow also kill range in fossil cars. I use at least 33% more gas in winter in Canada. It's especially bad on shorter daily trips of course, because you need a lot of gas to warm 250kg of engine and transmission from -15°C to +100°C operating temperatures, but it's a factor even on long trips. At least with an EV you can charge at home instead of standing in the wind holding a freezing smelly pump handle.
@volvo_kristian
@volvo_kristian 6 ай бұрын
@bernardrr The reduction aren't that major on fossil cars. In my opinion it's hardly noticeable on longer trips. Totally agree on the shorter local trips.. However. The refuelling goes much faster and more smoothly. Despite if the handle could be cold. It's better than sitting 38 minutes charging 😂 Pros and cons with both
@shikoku14
@shikoku14 6 ай бұрын
The problem (or amazing thing to consider) with an EV is that you are doing this trip with the equivalent of a 9 litre fuel tank (I’m using the calculation that 8.9kWh = 1 litre of fuel) although cars look the same comparing an EV to a fossil with its massive fuel tank and inefficient use of that fuel (even before the percentage loss of winter is factored in) will never be comparable
@bernardrr
@bernardrr 6 ай бұрын
@@shikoku14 The maths are even more interesting in the other direction. Fossil cars are 25% efficient at most (unless you drive at a constant low RPM, on a mild Summer day, on flat roads). A 60 litre tank only gives you 15 litres of energy. The rest is wasted.

Hello and thanks for the video. I am quite disappointed for the result if the car has the newer 82kWh/79kWh (netto) battery? Road driving electric consumption almost 30kWh/100km? What??? And the temperatures were not even close to what we have in northern Finland. There XC40 would perform even worse. I have XC60 T8 plugin 2020 and we have 4,5L/100km consumption. The electric Volvos are not ready yet in my opinion.

Thanks for answering @@volvo_kristian! I also understand your point and it is easier to drive electric cars in Norway because you have so dense charging infrastructure etc. And to my mind Norway has probably the best winter testing conditions, because you have so many uphill/downhill sections and actually norwegian automobile union NAF tests electric cars there often and then the results are released also here by the finnish automobile union "Autoliitto". What I know about the results Volvo C40 and XC40 didn´t do that bad as your test could point out. But I am still little confused that how the actual electric consumption can be as high as +28kWh/100kms? Is there any tweaks or something that could be done to decrease the consumption? Volvo XC40 car manual/brochure says it should be around 16-17kWh so 28+ is way more than promised... We have really liked our plugin and even in wintertime the road driving consumption is not more than 7 litres/100km even batteries empty. But Volvo also has like Toyota a quite good hybrid system when driving. Happy new year 2024 from Finland and safe drives also to Norway!

@@volvomies1971Volvo's claimed consumption are under ideal conditions. Summer time. We've working under completely different circumstances here. Colder temperature, snow/ice covered roads that requires both motors engaged, elevation/mountain passing, winter tires, higher speed (maximum 95km/h in my test) and lastly high usage of climate. All of this takes the consumption to high 20's. I was actually expecting to see it flip over to 30, but didn't. Happy new years 👌

@@volvomies1971 I think the hills probably affect a lot. We have a XC40 MY24 AWD, did 320km x2 during Christmas in Finland and we got pretty good numbers I would say. One way around -8C, cruise control 85km/h, 22.8 kWh/100. Other direction, -23C with 27.1kWh/100 average consumption. And these numbers were not even with "range optimizer" turned on. AFAIK it turns off some of the internal cabin comfort functions, which gives even better consumption. Another reference point I have is around 0C, 250km trip, 20.0kWh/100. Car always pre-heated.

ev's are a joke in winter. i know i have one. my kia ceed can do 800 kms to a full tank costing 900 kr. fast charging costs more than running an ice car. 200 kwh batteries needed in a car like this. only buy an ev to get to and from work if you can charge at home. otherwise an utter waste of time and money. plus 8 years from now this car will end up being scrapped because the battery will kaput. so any money you think you have saved will be long gone on a new battery lol. evs are a scam. ice cars are going nowhere. i own an ev btw.

@@volvo_kristian people spending 500 to 600 thousand krona on a stupid 2.5 ton ev to save money on fuel lol. then find out they are saving nothing if fast charging. even charging at home do you really save that much? you can buy a brand new toyota aygo for 160 000 kr. we just bought one. does 4.5l per 100kms. if serviced right it will last for 20 to 30 years trouble free. no electric car made today will still be running in 10 years from now. most if not all will be scrapped because the battery is worn out. ev's have a place ofc. we use ours to get into town and back and it only cost us 200 k krona. but if you work out the cost and the savings u think you are making it works out in reality you save nothing. batteries cost a fortune to replace. forget an ev. paying 700k for one is madness.

How about factoring in the pollution you create with an ICE? While not having much of a winter so far in Canada is OK to some, the summer forest fires and shortage of water in the reservoirs is getting bad, even on the west coast. Sorry, but if it means putting up with the perceived shortcomings of EVs, think of it as a necessary price to pay. We could always go back to riding horses, with a range of 30km and average speed of 15-20kph if you prefer.

@@isaachunt5799 check out how Norway’s pollution is dropping thanks to 50% of all passenger vehicles on the road being EV now. It will take some time to move away from oil, but yes, let’s go after the low hanging fruit like personal vehicles first. Unless you think 40C temperatures and no rain are worth the price.
