Sumary: Sad times these guys, seen it so many times now in games and movies, politics ruins pleasure and I wish they would keep it out of movies and games but here it is again. I would probably have given this a 7/10 but the game is so Politically correct with the dialog and agents character that is literally ruins any immersion for this game. I found myself skipping all the voiced chat after a couple of hours as it was just ruining the game, your eyes see badass agents fighting for your life, your ears hear hipster college students talking all smart ass, the two don't mix. Someone summed it up perfectly " The human characters in this game are those kind of people who would fight for aliens' rights during an alien invasion". Combat wise it's quite solid, not as deep as previous Xcom games but very serviceable, the alien agents really make it fun with their cool abilities, you can do some great combo moves. the enemies are also quite well done with some good attacks that can cause huge damage tom your squad. It's buggy though, I ran into quite a few bugs during combat, most were camera glitches but sometimes my agents would act all weird and not be able to access their powers. Overall it's worth the sale price just for the combat alone but at the full price of £16 I have to say nope, when you have characters as bad as this in a game that has quite a bit of dialog it's nauseating and just ruins the game, for me anyway.

I already bought the game before your review, based on the gameplay (which looked great). I assumed the character development would be inexistant since form the start in 1992, character development had been "emergent" (meaning the story of each soldier creates itself via gameplay). For example I remember 2 soldiers who saved each other asses countless of times in XCOM 1992. They also happened to have the same lastname (XCOM92 didn't have a lot of them) so I've decided they were brothers. At some point one of them died, and the one left became berserk (that was a in-game mechanics when panicking). So I've decided he had PTSD, and played him as a lone wolf, refusing to stick with the team and rushing alone into the aliens lines with a bunch of activated grenades (so if an alien shot him, both would explode in little pieces, and no other soldier would have to risk his life trying to heal him...). It was me of course who decided to play that soldier that way, but it seemed it was the only way due to everything that happened in-game. But now it's impossible to do that because de devs gave my soldiers a back story and a personality which would most likely not fit with what will happen in-game... It's a shame the designer didn't understand this very important part of the series...

My favorite part of XCOM 2 was the sense of dread and the badass 90's movie sort of alien fighting atmosphere the whole game was about. Permadeath on your characters that you got attached to and freedom fighting against all odds. It was great. So you're telling me in this game you play as a squad of happy-go-lucky hipsters whose main tagline is "yay diversity!" who go around making cute quips at one another while under heavy fire in life or death combat? @joseaca the problem is writing and design choice in my opinion. I get what you are saying about having many good voiceovers. I am playing mordhau now, a medieval, budget online fighting game. In my opinion - it has the best voice commands I have seen in years. They are very immersive and not generic and they sound fantastic. I love shouting while charging the enemy. And because they are made so well - majority of players use them. Can't remember any other game where people enthusiastically use voice commands all the time. Did budget determined the quality of those voicelines? No, it is pure design decisions and talent. We may disagree on this topic, but I stand by my opinion. And again, I do agree that with lower budget you can't hire 9999 voice actors, but what these voice actors say and hoe they say it - I think that is determined by the people in the company. One more quick example. Fallout 3 was cheap on voice actors and had the same people voice many different characters but since it was all done by professionals - nobody was complaining, voice acting was great.

I think how you use voice actors, the writing and which voice actors you pick is a huge process that requires a lot of talent and thinking. That's why a buget game like mordhau can pretty much be a leader and standart of voiceovers withouht having triple A budgets.

Nailed it Mac. This is a shallow mobile game with an XCOM skin. I refunded after 2 hours - its just trash. Biggest problem (and there are many) is the imposition of these characters on me, none of whom are interesting or have any substance; I don't care about these characters, they are cardboard cutouts that are bland at best and downright irritating at worst - a very poor substitute for my previous XCOM characters whose stories were written by me, the player. Plus it reeks of progressive political virtue signalling. It's a shame there seem to be a significant amount of uncritical fanboys desperate to praise it simply because it has 'XCOM' in the title.

Pineli XCOM was always diverse, but it did not have this childish US college hipster vibe pushed in your face, fighting for multi species harmony. The strength of a formula is simplicity. XCOM is an US vs THEM, them being aliens. Now the idea of working with aliens is not the spoiler, but this type of execution of it is. Reminds me a lot of Star Wars The Last Jedi when a new vision (almost) ruins the entire franchise.

The gameplay is the most important aspect of a game imo. That being said, if there's something really irritating about the game that detracts from the overall experience, then it can lower your opinion of it. Imagine if you were playing a game with amazing gameplay, but there was an audio bug that would buzz in your ear frequently. You might enjoy the gameplay but that buzzing would eventually drive you crazy.

As disappointed as i'd be in this if it was a fully priced XCOM sequel, for a ten pound spin off i'm more than happy with what we got here. Having hero characters with no customisation or randomly generated soldier pool, as well as no permadeath is very 'not-XCOM' but again, for a cheap spin off i'm okay with them trying a different approach for this one

I wish when the alien squad members talk they still had a few alien words that they say or phrases in alien laguage, like alien alternatives to (Damn, shit, stupid, etc) but they all the sound like they are re skined to look like aliens. Like what they did to the last skirmisher character in the last game.

I love XCOM EU/EW and XCOM2 / WOTC but I cannot believe the amount of fanboy positive reviews of XCOM:CS on Steam, the game really needed more time to be made / tested. I've had two of my campaigns made soft locked due to being on multi-phase missions with iron man enabled, was forced to start all over again. Real shame because I really liked the idea of this game.

My biggest gripe with Xcom2 was the focus on the story and the inclusion of the player into it. The "commander" became so important. Xcom: Enemy Unknown handled the narrative better by rewarding your best soldiers and making them the stars of the narrative. I'm very sad to see that they're taking steps further away from this type of narrative design. :/

I had to bite my tongue and focus on enjoying the game. The deeper lore parts, such as news reports and the written loading screen stuff is good, then the team start talking and it kills it. I see what they're trying to do, they're trying to make it a buddy film/game in the Xcom universe but yeah, you have a point of how they've killed it.

Judging by the visual style and general presentation it seems like they are going for a teen cartoon feel. With that in mind the characters' personalities makes more sense as it reflects how many teens communicate and what they think is fun and cool. I'd be interested in what the actual target audience for the game is though; I imagine the cool teen demographic doesn't overlap much with turn-based tactics players.

I think it's more that these days every franchise has to be "light" and "funny" rather than them being hipsters as such. The Hitman series is probably my fav game series ever and even that in recent years has suffered the "has 2 be funni" syndrome to a certain extent, even though the games are still good at their core

I haven't played it, but watching some of it I really enjoyed the absolutely silly script. X-Com has always been so uber-serious despite sometimes having really silly enemies. And I like that. But I think it's great that they mixed it up a bit. Kind of reminds me of some D&D sessions.

As someone who loves XCOM, I have to say that I didn't enjoy this one as much as XCOM EU/EW and XCOM 2/WOTC. It didn't really feel like an XCOM game with a small group of XCOM soldiers acting as SWAT officers in a city, not to mention XCOM working alongside aliens though XCOM was really made to counter aliens. This game also popped out of nowhere without any teasers or anything, just a tralier before it was released a week later. They should've just done XCOM 3 after seeing that ending in WOTC because this one feels like a cash grab or just some shitty spinoff.

Listen, the human's can sound a bit like hipsters, that's fine. I have a big problem with the aliens though, they are basically like your next-door human. If they at least made the aliens more believable, it wouldn't be as bad.

I played 4 hours and in a mission was put up against 4 templar-esq melee guys and then a super melee guy, 2 andromedons, 2 chrysalids, 2 shield boys, 2 androids, and a fucking gatekeeper. They didn't balance the game at all. Xcom 2 I'd be able to work that , but 4 dudes who are low level in a broom closet of a map? Oh and there's a teleporter in the room you have to shut off too or more pop in. I'm glad Jake Solomon wasn't in charge of this one because its fucked. I like the city and the breach mechanics, but they should have opted for more dlc.

Finally! A good review. Would also be worth mentioning the animations are fucking awful, and the turn based system isn't bad until there's a constant stream of never ending reinforcements every single fucking time which wrecks your perfectly laid out strategy. I mean, fucks sake, i thought these guys were the police, but they show up, breach in, steal the objective/VIP, then run away as a never ending torrent of terrorists burst through the windows. I thought it was their fucking job to stop them, not to leave?

One of the few times I disagree with your opinion of a game. I think your obvious dislike of the dialogue overshadow many other aspects of the game - that you barely describe in your review. It didn't seem fair to me. Many of the other nuances added to the game I find have added depth and made the game more interesting in regards to the choices you have to make i.e. where you want to send your agents, how you prioritize what you want to do or not do. I find the tactical game play rich as ever, and that even though there is no longer permadeath, Agents still have to deal with "Scars" and being out of commission for longer than usual if you want to heal those Scars. Which weighs into the ever increasing pressure to keep the city and districts from going into further unrest. So far, I'm enjoying the game immensely, and for $10 it's a steal purchase. I don't even mind the dialogue that you viscerally dislike (oddly). Anyone reading this should look over other reviews and give the game a second look. ps: I am just an old retired guy living in Idaho, have no affiliation with Firaxis at all. Been playing XCOM games for decades now.

I saw this pop up the other day and was curious about it. Thanks for the review!! It's sad to see Firaxis bungle the story this badly... Considering that the story was some of the best parts of the XCOM/XCOM2 games. Sure it was a little cliche and even predictable at times, it was still great and immersive... War of the Chosen was fantastic and I have played through all of the xcom games several times. I wonder what went wrong with this one? Mack Investigates!! I wonder if they outsourced it or gave the writing to their interns or something...
