I find it funny that people are complaining this $3200 unit doesn't have EVERY SINGLE option and feature from what is essentially a $13,000 Quad CDJ x A9 setup. My only issue is the apparent lack of magvel.

The problem is a CDJ shouldn’t cost almost $3000 to begin with. They’re relatively basic technology with resistive touch screens like phones from the early 2000s and a cheap ARM processor in order to run rekordbox, you could build a whole PC setup with a 4090 for $3k there’s no reason one CDJ should cost that much, same with the all in one controllers.

People seem to not understand that companies have massive overhead, operating costs, payroll, r&d etc… Its not just the cost of the parts inside. People also seem to not understand that companies need to make PROFIT to continue to exist. With that said, you certainly can build a pc or whatever else and run serato or rekordbox on it nobody is stopping you.

I totally agree. Prime 4 is way above this one. In my case, I even went cheaper. I'm a wedding DJ (no scratching) and I always use an external analog mixer (Yamahha MG10) so I just went for a DENON SC Live 4, just $1300. I'veused it for 2 years already with not a single glitch and I keep on seing/reading people with either controllers or laptops crusing, allusing expensive ones. I'll keep my SC Live 4 until there's a standalone that works with stems. And just in case, I bought a used SC Live 2 for $700 which I bring as my backup. Problem solved :)

forreal. I currently use 2x denon sc5000 prime and x1800. Those are coming up on 8 years old now and they have every feature that the AZ has and then some. Only thing this has on the denons is sonic link, which is a great feature but not necessary for most DJs.

Totally agree with the comments re price. Also, the streaming and connectivity options are miles behind the competition. If AT reduced their prices so it reflected the feature set, which let’s be honest, is not what it should be at this price, then it could be called worthwhile. We as dj’s and the community need to stop this madness that is the AT/Pioneer pricing… I’m not anti AT, only tired of them pushing products that don’t justify the price tag, (in my humble opinion) based on what the competition offers regarding feature set vs price … Thanks for the in depth review Carlo, appreciated🎉

All they need was send/receive, zone out, tidal integration, magvel fader and it was on the money. At the moment it feels like a bit of a piss take to say we’ve given you want you want, now rack off. For it being 7k in Australia, it’s a hard one to swallow for what it is. Great quality review as always mate.

"Alpha Theta has delivered big time" - really?! No internal drive, no Aux In, no Aux Send, no elements dedicated to Stem-functionality, only one USB-C for laptop connections which makes the switch between two djs difficult inconvenient, no streaming services beside beatport, no dmx, no option to connect USB-sticks via USB-C.... and the list goes on... all of this for 3299,- Euro! If the device had been released in 2021, the features would be acceptable. In 2024, that's simply not enough. At such a high price, I expect more, especially essential features such as the ability to connect two laptops. While the device has great features and is one of the more interesting ones on the market, Alpha Theta continues to underperform and lacks real innovation and essential basics.

I love this thing and what it has done for my shows has put me so much further above the competition.. I decided to buy 2 so I could rock 8 decks .. it sounds like overkill but everything is so intuitive and the latency is incredible!! I thennnn ended up buying a 3rd deck to keep in storage, just in case one of my other 2 decks breaks down or something. 👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Just stick to the FLX10... I got it when it first came out and transitioned to club layouts and it works great 👍... plus the features on the FLX10 still out matches the AZ, even if you still need a laptop.

To summarise: Expensive, no active layer deck colours, light control that has been on Denon Prime hardware for almost 4 years, weird beat jump button location, gated playback taken from the RX3, the same awful 3 column menu system when sorting tracks, no internal ssd capability, cue point display that has no labels (still.) The only positives I see are the ESS audio chip, wireless headphone capability and the extra dedicated master EQ. Looks like another overpriced con job from Pioneer under the Alpha Theta badge. They can change the name, but they’re still behind the game. I would go for a Denon Prime 4+ with more functionality, flexibility and lower price than this, that gives a Dj much better value.

A very vital point you seem to have missed is that the XDJ AZ is supposed to be replacing the XZ, which is dumb if you ask me, especially as the XZ had a Magvel fader. Heck, even the DDJ 1000 (which I own) has one.

But, one thing I'll need to correct is that the XZ did not have a Magvel fader. Pioneer DJ even said in a forum post that the Magvel fader doesn't fit into the XZ. Unfortunately, looks like that carried over into the AZ

Sorry if I already stated this here, but as a collector of controllers, very much the same way guitarists collect guitars, I still believe the RANE PERFORMER blows this thing away. I know people will continuously argue that point, since they believe the PERFORMER is only a battle DJ tool, however, once one turns off it’s motor, it effectively does all this does, and more. And, even with the motorized jog wheels on, you can still do more than this new Pioneer unit offers. ✌️

Well, i got the XZ. AZ got some great improvements. But: - "AUX Send" only by bluetooth? I have a Rodecaster Pro II. In it you can plug hardware via Bluetooth, Wireless, RCA, XLR ,Jack and USB-C. You can connect 2 computers in it! In XDR-AZ iI like the idea of get more advanced, but we got to think also that we "lost" a physical connection needed for a lot of hardware that is still on the market, as well as for hardware that will be released in the medium term. - LAN port x1? Can we only use one connection per lan? Use CDJ's or other hardware, just with a hub? I like the Wi-Fi protocol, but I feel safer using an RJ45 cable and I have faster data transmission speeds. From what I saw, they are only using the 5G network, when they could have 2.4G and 5G options. Not all countries have full coverage for 5G. - Exclusive Alpha Theta headphones: The headphones don't seem robust to me. Also have "only" 0.9 ms of latency...I want 0.0 ms of latency. Yes, it's a big upgrade compared to the XDJ-XZ, an update to the RX3 but it still doesn't make it a Game Changer. It has very similar functions to the Opus Quad, that's for sure, but the XDJ-AZ is very "Cloud" and less physical. One of the things that many of us were asking for, after the launch of the Opus Quad, was a DJ controller with an internal disk and that would be the ultimate game changer.

I guess AlphaTheta is really trying to push the boundaries for cloud-based DJing with this one. You've raised some good points though, and some markets may not be ready for what the AZ is trying to offer. One counterpoint though is that 0.9ms is still amazing for wireless transmissions. 0 latency, like I mentioned in the video, only exists in analog form for now, but maybe the future might hold something better. Tbh, scratching on wireless headphones blew my mind as I never thought that'd be actually possible!

It's a small upgrade over the XDJ-XZ, I think that the fact you can control 4 channels through the software is what was the greatest weakeness on its predecessor, but Alpha Theta maybe wants to be conservative and keep hold of some features for the future upgrades and then make you spend more money... Well, concurrence is there, such a shame some DJs dont give a proper attention to Rane and Denon...

Luckily it hasn't froze yet. As much as I love my Denon Prime 4 this unit is just superior for better sound and better mixing. Mixing is more accurate, double drops more precise. Now I'm starting to understand why this was club standard.

This is the sauce! Only thing I was wish we had was an FX lever similar to the DJM-S7. I don't like all the space used for the mic EQ stuff but IF it lets me map those knobs to FX that would be nice. I wonder if the AZ can support direct Tidal integration without the use of a laptop or phone?

Can‘t agree with the negative comments.. since the xdj xz everyone was waiting for 4 decks on one device.. now they did it and the az will sell like butter .. small venues, mobile djs,… this is a full 3000 setup for 1/3 of the price Don‘t get me wrong - the competition may have better tech, but in the end if you dj in a club you will face a pioneer setup. I‘m pretty sure stems will come with the next generation of cdjs

I am not sure if this was mentioned and I've watched all of the reviews from every major DJ creator but... do the Color FX knobs have the Center Lock feature like it does on the DJM-A9? I thought that was a nifty feature the mixer had. It's not a dealbreaker but a man could dream as someone who likes to do fast Color FX knob turns.

@@djcarlo Oh, I'm not referring to the tactile click when you turn the knob back to 12oclock. Those are standard for most gear. I'm referring to this feature in the DJM-A9 where you can't move the knob past the center to the other direction. Pretty handy for fast knob turns & prevents accidentally turning the knob to the other direction when you're just meaning to just turn back to center. But I'm assuming it's not a feature in the XDJ-AZ. All good!!

AZ is a standalone gear. Dont complare it to a controller. To use STEMS or DRUM CIRCUIT you need a computer who does the job. GVR6 shows what alphatheta is able to deliver on Stem/Sample and live remixing.

*sigh* there's no difference. There's no two brands. It's a full on name change, with the same people. Think of it as a rebranding. The thing is, without being tethered to the main Pioneer Corp name, they can be more experimental and innovative with their gear. Pioneer Corp has already sold it's shares in AlphaTheta, and I believe, legally, they can't use the name anymore. Given, it's ruffled a lot of feathers, but it's only been a year since the change, and theres still so much they're trying to do. I'm just trying to report on the change as it's a pretty big deal in the DJ industry, and I was sure a bazillion folks would've been asking about the name change haha

I hybrid between usb and laptop on mine it’s just every time I take it somewhere with “Serato only DJ’s” the usb crossover is an inconvenience especially when cheaper controllers have that functionality. Not to me! I just don't think the hardware was ready yet (or maybe the software, who knows). Even standard laptops struggle with stems, so a standalone's hardware would need to be greatly souped up to cope with the processing demand for it

I don't prefer wireless headphones. You have always to have a wired backup as battery is always a pain point. I have a wireless mic and I have 2 batteries for both of them and 4 (yes, four 😅) backup batteries and I usually have issues with them 😅

I had my favourite tracks on the USB drive, but playing tracks from the DJ pool was a nightmare 😱 Also tried to share internet for the controller on my mobile phone but the mobile signal strength was also poor. I'm a bit disappointed about wireless technology 🤷

We wanted a 4 channel with built in stems, bigger screen than the XZ and the same connectivity. We got a rx3 with 2 extra channels and STILL needs a laptop to make it work properly. This is a scammy move by Alpha Theta gatekeeping to maximise profits. Go buy a flx10 and save a fortune and have more functionality. This unit makes no sense at all to me and there’s no way am I buying a flagship controller that’s meant to be standalone and still needling a laptop to make it run properly. Absolutely mental moves!!

Amazing review as always. Is there something in the settings that lets you program the RGB? I want it looking sleek and one colour like the opus quad or the flx4. Having the pad colour linked to the cue colour means nothing to a lot of people because we just know it as ABCDEFGH and not by colour

Thanks for the great review, I love using the "slip" function, on the XZ every time a new track is loaded this function is turned off, has the AZ got a workaround for this where the function is able to stay on even when loading a new track, I find it super annoying that it automatically turns off every time I load a new track, is there a way to keep this function permanently on or is it not possible?
