I'm pretty sure the whole thing with the nuka dark went like this: They were planning on shipping it in a standard-ass bottle. No special nothing, just a completely bog standard bottle. Then when the gigantic shitshow that was the launch happened, and they were ass-deep in customers screaming at them, someone took another look at this and was like "Oh no... we were planning on bait and switching the customers with this too. QUICK! Find a way to give them a bottle!" But actually spending the time and resources to put a custom shaped bottle into works at the last minute would have been too costly and delayed it even further. So what would you do? Obviously you make a quick cheap plastic shell for your boring bottle and hope the customers don't somehow notice. Its a really transparent last-minute patch job.

Bethesda has used the same engine for a very long time and an out dated engine can't really run new games and concepts. Many games had systems tied to fps, especially Bethesda games. It's not a big deal on console where frame rate is locked, but on pc you get some people zooming around and others in slowmo. I really hope they have made a new game engine for ES6, if it ever comes out.

If you sell anything for a fixed price (including presale) and after that realize it's too expensive to make, you only have two legal options: a) make it anyway for a loss and keep to the sales contract or b) cancel the sales contract and refund the customer including all losses incurred by the customer (banking fees etc.). The customer isn't responsible for your screwup when determening the sales price. Sending out a different product to that specified in the sales contract is fraud. In the U.S. (keeping in mind that the sale was over the internet) this can be classified as wire fraud, which turns it from a state jurisdiction into a federal jurisdiction, which in turn means your trial has a chance to appear live on TV[*]. The fraud was far too small, but it certainly would also have been fun watching Bethesda management getting roasted by politicians in an U.S. Congress investigation. [*] Well, on C-SPAN at least, with the lowest picture and sound quality one can squeeze out of modern encoders without using potatoes as cameras. But you have a good chance to have more viewers than a Senate Pro forma session.

To answer your question about Bethesda's track record, Bethesda's fanbase is a bit like Blizzard's. They'll buy and consume whatever shit they're fed. Their fanbase only exists because the modding community fixes every game Bethesda puts out for free. Anyone who knew Bethesda's track record knew that Fallout 76 would be a trash fire because an always online game will necessarily not allow modding or unofficial patches. Once you take away Bethesda's primary source of free bugfixing, it was a forgone conclusion the game would be a shitfest. The thing the fanbase doesn't like mentioning is that every Bethesda game launches in a nigh unplayable state.

I had actually pre-ordered it xP I knew it was gonna be a buggy game, but thought it'd just add to the fun for me and the boys. Turns out the bugs were so much worse then I could imagine. It's like thinking "Oh nothing too bad would happen here. Why would it?" Only BAM! Somebody crashed a semi truck into the building! There was no endgame content or anything at all to do so the only pleasure I had in the game was to play a Bounty Hunter. When you'd grief players a bounty is placed on you, on the main map the bad boy can't see anyone, but everyone see's him marked for death, and whoever kills him takes the bounty out of his pocket. During the early days, bounties were a plenty so having my guy dressed as Uncle Sam gunning you down was fun...till I faced the Bugged Outlaw. The dude had the invincibility glitch, meaning he couldn't be killed, even if reduced to 0 HP. I had a full lock n load montage and blew his anus apart taking out 350% of his total health and he did not die. It was effectively the last straw for my sanity in 76. A few years later, the game is actually patched to a decent game now, but still lacking in endgame fun.

Unlike No Man's Sky, there was a lot of greed and belief that customers are moronic sheep from Bethesda. Meanwhile the Devs of No Man's Sky simply overpromised beyond their ability. I ain't gonna give a company chance the third time because of pure greed. And some here may try to argue that they are improving Fallout 76 even now. But the thing is, unlike Hello Games who decided to make up for it without demanding payments, paid dlc and so on for their expansions, Bethesda went subscription model and even had that "microtransaction" shop from the start of the game.

It "just works". 21:55 - Bethesda games are ALL buggy shit, but the modding community eventually fixes them and Bethesda takes credit for putting out "great games". They've been using the same game engine for like 20+ years. Starfield (the new space game they're making) is STILL using this engine, and I guarantee it will suffer from the same bugs as all their previous titles. The reason this game's bugs were so evident is that it's an "online only" title and thus modders weren't allowed access to the code to "fix" it for them.
