Yoko Shimomura was only a composer for the first game. Off-Seer was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, who is most famously known for Chrono Trigger but he has worked on every single Xeno game in some form since Xenogears.

Xenoblade 2 actually does leitmotifs really well; I'd say they are definitely the most memorable to me among the franchise. I'd say that 3 as well has some great leitmotifs, and especially in terms of callbacks to previous games, but 2 really shines through with the placement of the leitmotifs in terms of really driving home emotional beats via the music, executing it incredibly well. So much so that Dan, from Music Theory for Gamers, was actually brought to weeping because of how well the leitmotifs were executed while listening to the OST, despite having never played the game himself!

@@jellycore1316 no seriously though, video games can be a ridiculously powerful medium for displaying and sharing art. I totally get what you mean with video game music and agree there. There's a reason that the community that loves VGM is ever-growing, and it's because it's made up of a group of individuals who have been profoundly impacted by the game and its music, and/or people who simply appreciate art and good music! And I love Dan; he's such a wholesome dude who just loves what he does!

What I find most amazing about Dan's reaction is that he starts crying the exact moment most players start to cry in game. After the break, when the snare and the French horn sets in. This is another example of Xenoblade's excellent musical storytelling.

A Formidable Enemy plays when you fight an Elite Enemy (slightly stronger than normal) so not even a boss theme, kinda like how Battle Torna is just the regular battle theme from the XB2 DLC lol I will admit to you that I definitely fought Elite Enemies on purpose just to listen to this song more. It's so damn good.

there are definitely leitmotifs in xenoblade. a few are even present in more than one game. but they are pretty hard to notice when only listening to a few pieces here and there. they're also a bit more present in the more emotionally charged songs, which you've listened less of. but yea after listening to the soundtrack of xenoblade 2 wayyyy too much ever since it came out, i can definitely notice them, heh

Close but no, it wasn't Yoko Shimomura! She only worked on XC1/DE Off-Seer was composed by Mitsuda 😎 2:24 Actually when you heard Engage The Enemy, you noticed the similarities with another one (which would definitely be Weight of Life as they share the same leitmotif). The fact that "A Formidable Enemy" plays very often is the best part, since it's for slightly stronger versions of regular monsters, which are plenty to be found in every area. It's such a fun track I always went out of my way to drag out the fight by luring other monsters in.

More xenoblade is always appreciated! Btw as a rule of thumb, when reacting to xenoblade 3 ost go to the newer videos with the white background art, because the ones you just listened to are different fragments (since the game uses dynamic music) mixed by a user while the ones with the white background videos are taken by the official soundtrack released last August!

"Off-Seer" is in fact a Xenoblade 3 term, which you learn about right at the start of the game. In as minimal detail as I can come up with, an off-seer performs a kind of funeral ritual to "see off" the deceased. Formidable Enemy is just pure excitement and momentum and it's so good!

Two very nice songs. A nice relaxing title screen, and the song that has ALL the bass. If you check out more Xenoblade Chronicles 3 OST, I'd recommend looking for videos that have the picture of the party around a campfire as those are more likely to be the actualy OST versions. Most other videos are from before the OST released and some songs were sort of pieced together due to the way the music works in game. Mostly it happens with just a few battle tracks though. Also glad to hear you'll be playing Xenoblade DE (if my pfp didn't give it away, I'm a fan of the series) If you plan to play the other games, you might want to hold off on the Future Connected extra content until after you play XBC2 and Torna and/or just before you play XBC3.

I'm sure sometimes mentioned but I want to bring it up in case no one has. In three specifically, an off seer is someone who plays the flute for this have died " sending them on into the afterlife. The soundtrack incorporates this in a unique way. A lot of battle themes a have a " climax" version they plays when an enemy is close to death. And these climax versions will add in more flutes, like in the 3 version of you will know our names. This is essentially the party "sending on" their opponent as they finish the fight.

Offseer is a mitsuda track for the record. Mitsuda from 2 onwards has been the main composer, and leitmotifs are very much present in almost every cutscene theme in 3, and most cutscene themes in 2. The title theme for both 2 and 3 are heavily referenced throughout both games as their main leitmotif. 1 is a bit sparse with its leitmotifs but they also exist.

The only leimotifs I can think of in Xenoblade are a specific section in Engage the Enemy from 1. It features in Counterattack from 2 (which itself is based on a phrase from Engage the Enemy). Then Carrying the Weight of Life uses the leitmotif from both songs in 3.

Yoko Shimomura has done a few songs only in the first game. But as of wondering what Off-Seer actually is, without spoiling anything, it's a job some characters take in Xenoblade 3. They mainly play flutes which are diegetic to the other characters. And that's all I can say without going into depth. Looking forward to your Xenoblade playthrough though, seeing as I've been with the series since the original on Wii.

Also, thery're the looped version that were posted after the game released, but the Album release have a "proper end" to them, instead of a fade out. I think a Xenoblade complete OST stream (or more than one, as they're at least 4hours long) after playing each game, where you could hear the complete tracks with the reference in mind, but focus on the music itself instead of gameplay and story, I think that could be interesting, too.

The first Xenbolade doesn’t have much in the way of leitmotifs. The title theme is used in maybe one or two other songs, but that’s really it. Starting with Xenoblade 2, Mitsuda took over as the audio director and started making the soundtracks more cohesive. You’ll hear “Off-Seer” EVERYWHERE in Xenoblade 3.The heroes have a theme, the villains have a theme, individual characters have themes… Yoko Shimomura was more like a guest contributor, to be honest. Personally I think Xenoblade 2 has the best soundtrack.

Xenoblade definitely has plenty of leitmotifs but if you're just listening to the proper full songs they don't recur that often and the ones that do are usually just short sections in larger pieces. Play the games and you won't just notice them, they will MOVE you. Also there are some places where other games would use leitmotifs that xenoblade simply uses the same song because it's long enough to do that. Side note: in the context of the game it feels weird to me that a song called Off-Seer doesn't have flute in it.

I’m no expert on Xenoblade Chronicles music - I never played 1, only did a base playthrough of 2 and only listened to a handful of area and battle themes on repeat, and only listened to the soundtracks of 3, but the series definitely likes to play with leitmotifs. Xenoblade 3 in particular - that game really likes to throw around themes from “A Life Sent On,” to the point where it’s easily more of a main theme of the story than the title screen music. Although the series as a whole likes to keep one trope in particular going. Not really strictly a motif, but all of Xenoblade 1, 2, and 3 have a version of the iconic “You Will Know Our Names” battle track. (The original in 1, “You Will Recall Our Names” in 2, and both “You Will Know Our Names Finale” and “You Will Know Our Names Finale - Climax” for 3.) I don’t think they actually borrow any melodies, but the structure, instrumentation, and style are so similar, anyone hearing them for the first time would swear they’re related. The only reason I can remember the difference is because the Xenoblade 3 version features a flute very prominently and I listened to hours of the Xenoblade 2 version.

I'm not sure about this, as I'm not musician and haven't a really good ear either (at all), but instead of a "motif", I think the first few notes of the main themes are the same. at least for 1 and 2, 3 I'm not sure. or, even less sure, rather... Also, there haven't really been a motif in the series until Xenoblade 3, that reuses parts of other songs from 1 and 2 to create new tracks, which itself falls in line with the narrative of the game. also, the complete Xenoblade 3 OST is around 12 hours... and not a single second isn't peak, I love Xenoblade. Oh yeah, not really a "Xenoblade Series Motif", but right now I'm going through XenoGears, and there's a theme I believe is referenced in two tracks of Xenoblade 2. Maybe it's just my brain, though. or simply Mitsuda's "style" or something, idk.
