Wait, I thought the OPN only had 6 voices (3 FM, 3 Square). What's the special mode that allows seven?
@k0ndziorek2297 жыл бұрын
It's Channel 3's special mode. Every single OPN's channel is composed out of 4 FM operators. For channel 3 it is possible to "split" it so it becomes either two 2-op FM channels, one 2-op FM and two sne waves or just 4 sine waves. Even simplified YM2612 that sits in Mega Drive/Genesis can do it.

So if I got this right, the OPN can be: 3 FM with 4-op + 3 Squares (normal), 2 FM with 4-op + 2 FM with 2-op + 3 Squares, 2 FM with 4-op + 1 FM with 2-op + 5 Squares and 2 FM with 4-op + 7 Squares. If so, that's frick'in sweet! Just to double check, an opperator is a waveform and or effect, such as reverb, isn't it? This kind of technical music engineering fasinates me : 3

About the first two yes, latter are: 2 FM with 4op + 1 FM with 2 op + 2 Sines + 3 Squares 2 FM with 4op + 4 Sines + 3 Squares 3 Square wave channels are a totally different component, loosely connected with the FM part. Operator is either a carrier wave or modulator, depends how you use it (here is a more detailed and more technical document explaining all of that:www.smspower.org/maxim/Documents/YM2612) About technical music engineering OPN can do one more thing - use third square channel to play 4-bit, 4/8 KhZ lo-fi samples - here you have a short clip of that trick in action ;): kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3epo2Cah6-DbMU P.S. Modulator can't act as chorus/echo/reverb effect. In order to simulate reverb you can detune two (or better, four) operators against each other.

Lol, my mistake, I misread. Seriously though mate, that's awsome. Cheers for your help :D

@@k0ndziorek229 3 FM with 2op is also possible, but those 3 FM channels can only use the same instrument.

This is incredible. Is there a good source for reliable D/A converter chips that go with this chip?
@AloanMoreira16 жыл бұрын
sounds similar to YM2151 :o

I wish there was a vst for this (not a tracker, cause I find them complicated) for I know that TFM tracker exists with this chip and it might be the only one!
@ltva87812 жыл бұрын
Also there is Furnace tracker. Or you can use BambooTracker but ignore 3 last FM channels and ADPCM channels
@AloanMoreira12 жыл бұрын
@@ltva8781 Thanks a lot! but again, they´re trackers. The only way I can make music is with a piano roll :D - much simpler to me! I have used cakewalk studio and LMMS for piano roll music creation, but they require VSTis. I´ve used VOPM on it but it emulates the YM2151, not the YM2203. Unless they can playback ready made midi music with its channels, then that would suffice! (asfaik trackers don´t play midi music either)
@ltva87812 жыл бұрын
@@AloanMoreira1 then I can't help you, I think - chip music is tightly connected with trackers, so trackers in most cases are the only option until some vst pops up
