Superb review. Loved it. My set up is XF405, C200 and EOS R for gimbals. I find XF405 is the best middle ground for quick hassle free go to hand held imaging. C200 I need to keep it fixed on a heavy tripod with all the crazy attachments - camera cage, plates and battery brick and all that. EOS R I need to release from stills duty. So XF405 it is - I end up shooting all my videos with it. Just got 2 additional batteries and slipped in 2 fast SDXC 128 GB cards. With multiple cards in relay recording mode, I have zero worries about continuous footage. I am pretty much shooting day long hand held and on a light monopod. The XLR connection for audio gives me professional multi channel audio with sennheiser wireless lavellier mic. C200 is good with 4K raw but I invariably end up down sampling to 1920x1080 HD for end customer output. For HD quality visuals the 4K 8 bit footage from XF405 is good enough. However, it’s low light performance is a bit negative. For some strange reason I find shooting in auto exposure mode in xf405 a bit disconcerting compared to C200 where I can control the exposure and aperture much easily to get the perfect scene. But XF405 is a fantastic value for money packed with pro features in a small light form factor.

Why doesn't someone make a video camera with the latest sensors that come from a dslr / mirrorless? We need the image quality of a dslr along with the zoom capability and ease of use of a camcorder dedicated to video.

Nice video. I owned the xf400 for a time. I was amazed by the image quality for a 1" sensor camcorder. But like you, I found that the focus was not as good as the canon mirrorless cameras. Also the battery life is really bad, the mic holder doesn't allow space for a camera light, and many other small things that made me sell it. I tried to like it, but I shoot live events and I found that it slowed me down. But for your work, it seems like an excellent tool. Nice work!

Brilliant video as usual from the master. I have been thinking of going into video for a while now, I was wondering what you would recommend as a starting camera. I have had a lot of experience with canon systems for stills. For wildlife but know nothing about video for wild life , I know it’s a big ask but your input would be most welcome. I will be in Australia in November seeing my new grandson in Sydney and driving to Adelaide 5th time, love the whole country. Dave

I was told the XA45 is ok for Filming fast moving Aircraft, what they don't tell you is they say you should use a Tripod or Gimbal to get steady footage, too late as i already bought one, When filming Fast Aircraft the Camera image starts to shake using handheld, this ids really not good enough Canon.

Thanx Derek. I love my XF400! Its not perfect, but then, the perfect camera does not exist... The XF 400 is such a user friendly setup and I love it, especially in the wildlife setup. I'm also using my cameral for filming my kids sports events and it even does well in low light concerts etc.....

Thanks for the informative video, I’m looking at the XA50 the XF400 series is just that little bit out of my price range. I think a lot of the focus features wine very similar. Just a question, can you recommend a good bag? They are a similar size . Also in favourite accessories?

Hi Derek. Have commented on your full review, but have a couple of questions. I am considering this vs the Sony Z90. Do you know if the Z90 has similar remote control capability, say to pull focus. Also, I can’t find any info on the difference between the XF400 and the 405, which is quite a bit more expensive.

Derek, my camera has just arrived and I was wondering which memory card you would recommend for mostly 4k shooting. There are some very pricey cards out there, and I was thinking they might be overkill...

Hi Robin SANDISK EXTREME PRO U3 V30 SD 170MB/s Read 90MB/s Write 128GB C10 is the cards I use on XF400 Get two because I forget to take the card out of the card reader so times so it is good to have that back up when you get out in the forest and find that there is no card in slot 1. A tip for you shoot in color profile( Look 2 ). It has really good HDR. Then add color and sharpening in post Good like with you new toy. Cheers Derek
