"All art is useless". Oscar Wilde created art constantly. This was partially being self-deprecative about himself, but also an observation that we don't make art for a practical utilitarian purposes - rather it serves a wider function. So "useless" in a purely utilitarian purpose. This is what I take from it anyway.
@garethm32427 ай бұрын
The UB40 story (the guy playing them in the unemployment office as a protest) comes from the band's name. It's named after a benefits form "Unemployment Benefits 40" that you needed to fill in in the UK back in the day to get benefits (what you might call welfare). Apparently the band were mainly unemployed at the time they chose the name.

1:30:40 This quote is from a full page essay at the start of "The Picture of Dorian Gray." You need to read the preceding page of writing to understand the meaning of the final line. It was not meant to be extracted and read in isolation. There's a distinction between "USEless" and "WORTHless." His point is that art is not created to have a USE in the way that a tool does. It's created for its own sake, to stir up feelings, to be beautiful, to give pleasure, but not to be used to achieve some purpose. His explanation: "My dear Sir Art is useless because its aim is simply to create a mood. It is not meant to instruct, or to influence action in any way. It is superbly sterile, and the note of its pleasure is sterility. If the contemplation of a work of art is followed by activity of any kind, the work is either of a very second-rate order, or the spectator has failed to realise the complete artistic impression. A work of art is useless as a flower is useless. A flower blossoms for its own joy. We gain a moment of joy by looking at it. That is all that is to be said about our relations to flowers. Of course man may sell the flower, and so make it useful to him, but this has nothing to do with the flower. It is not part of its essence. It is accidental. It is a misuse. All this is I fear very obscure. But the subject is a long one. Truly yours, Oscar Wilde"

Fontwell Park is the only racecourse in Britain where horses have to use indicators as part of the 'Health and Safety' regulations, negotiating the sharp turns of the figure‐of‐eight course has become more dangerous in recent years and the installation of traffic lights just after the 2 miles 2 furlong marker has helped tremendously.

re: Things kids believe literally. When I was about seven at my Catholic primary school, we used to watch an educational BBC TV programme called "Maths in a Box", in which kids shrank down into a magic box to do maths lessons (I've just seen that there are episodes on here). At around the same time we were learning about doing our first confessions. The teacher said that to go to confession you went into a small box. I believed that we were going to shrink down into a box, and was obviously disappointed when that didn't happen. Fortunately I hadn't told anyone about what I believed, so I didn't get laughed at.

Ricky was laughing the Michael Stipe picture as he's in the corner and has a light on his head it which fits the lyrics to Losing My Religion, which goes "that's me in the corner, that's me in the spotlight, losing my religion". Also, race horses normally wear what's referred to as "blinkers" to prevent them seeing to the rear, blinders is a less common term.

Yes, Junior was sort of a sequel but not a sequel to the movie Twins, with Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. And yes, part of the plot is that Arnold is pregnant. [Spoiler] Basically, they invent a fertility drug that would minimise the chances of miscarriage, but when they aren't allowed to test it on a human subject, they decide to test it on Arnold to continue their research. They implant an ovum, with the intention of terminating the pregnancy at 3 months, but Arnold becomes so, I guess, overcome with pregnancy hormones, he secretly decides to keep taking the drug. And after 9 months gives birth via C-section. Did I mention it's a comedy? Complete zany nonsense. It was not a hit.

On the subject of repeating great experiences… there’s a brilliant Q&A with Ricky, Karl and Warwick in front of a live audience that you won’t be able to react to because Sky are really tight on the copyright for that one (I tried to upload it for you ages ago and could not do it), but they were asked if Karl and Warwick were good friends now. Karl said that Warwick invited him around for Christmas and he said “… no” (literally the answer he said he gave 😅) because he feels like they’ve had a great experience and there’s no point just going around for a meal because it will be as good as it was, again. It was weird because he was essentially making the exact same arguments as the guy Smerch spoke to in this!
