If you start a ticket with XFX asking about the warranty and modifying it (to water cool the part or put an aftermarket cooler, or even just change thermal paste), they are perfectly fine with it. They just tell you to return it back to as-manufactured condition before you send it back for warranty. So just preserve the original thermal pads and the cooler as you do your mods, and keep the cooler tucked away for returning it back to stock form and you are good with modifying the cards. I got this tip a while back and it is why I bought an XFX reference card so I could do my mods to the cooling prior to aftermarket versions coming later. Miners like duel bios cards because they can turn the overclock off we call it computation mode great for seti@home, crypto, and other shared computing projects. 3. The choice of material and configuration of the cooler has gone through R/D and exceeds what the components needs memory chips don't get that hot compared to the mosfets and GPU so STEEL is fine true stainless steel is non magnetic. 4. Gaming is like a racing your ramping up components to high heat and high stresses for a short period of time while shared computing is like driving from coast to coast non stop which will have the cards live longer especially when you turn overclocking off and have the fans at 100% I've used rx580xxx oc+ cards for more than 4 years and only had to replace the fans and the PSU they out lived my PSU, processor, and mainboard

Also, i think the steel plate is for the second 3 memory module row, because they sit right below the aluminium fins, not the aluminium block and they made the plate touch all modules to make the stress equal across the entire bank.

I'm sure you are aware of this but angled needle nose pliers, wether 45° or 90°, really help with removing small electrical connectors like that. Crucial with small connectors on cars where all sorts of dirt/debris/grime can get into the connector and lock it solid. Pulled way too many wires out of connectors before I started using either application specific pullers or just angled plain needle noses in random situations. Keep up the great work tech truth Jesus.

I have a XFX 590 and although the GPU it self does not overheat, something on the card does and causes my entire system to crash. Only when gaming though. Running a FurMark test does not cause it to crash, only gaming. I did notice that gaming pulls more watts than FurMark according to Hardware Monitor. On a open test bench it seems to run and work fine, but inside a closed case... like people in the real world would use it, something on the card overheats. Even if I override the fans to 100%... eventually... crash. The retailer I bought the card from had it on a open bench and it was fine. They didn't even have a case to test it in. They have a case now and will test it next week. Now, I can pull my card apart and replace that crap plate with a copper one to see if that helps, but that will void the warranty. In South Africa void warranty stickers kinda screw you if you brake them. This is a great video and in doing research on my card and finding your vids I have learned a lot. Thanks and keep it up.

You can improve cooling by applying thermal paste below the VRAM steel contact plate and applying thick thermal-pad on the whole backside of the video card touching the back-plate. And of course replacing the GPU die thermal paste with liquid metal. These three small changes will improve overclockability OR silence depending on what you want more

The vram runs hot, but not because the plate is steel. The steel plate was stamped on the wrong side, leaving a raised edge that prevents it from making proper contact with the block. Removing the raised edge with some sandpaper or a file (as well as adding a dab of thermal paste) lowers vram temps considerably.
@BenQuigley6 жыл бұрын
The alu block is extruded and then sliced, you can see the cut marks. The plate you see added is to expand the reach of the cooler. It helps to reduce cost as machining time is expensive.

@EricErnst6 жыл бұрын
14:35 stainless isn't magnetic either. Shouldn't be. Very low grades of stainless can be. 18:39 if thicker thermal pads were used directly on the aluminum/ copper materials, could they transfer heat to the memory instead of away? Maybe the steel bracket is used as a buffer to slow heat conductivity between the heat pipes and the memory.

@jpfidalgo76 жыл бұрын
On the extra steel plate, several reasons for that: 1-if the aluminium block is extruded an then cut to length it could be a re-use of the extrusion mold from previous designs so that they save money on making a new mold 2-for avoiding the crushing is almost plausible but in the opposite way (having a gap), specially if there is a significant difference in height from the GPU silicon and the memory modules, in which case the memory modules would be thinner and then require something more to compensate for the height difference and having actual contact from the thermal pad with the cooler 3-as with some vrms, just the fact that there is some mass that is directly touching the heat spice (even through a thermal pad) it will improve thermals as you have more mass to accumulate and dissipate through itself the energy I agree it could be better, but I think this is the kind of detail that should be fixed with major cooler revamps, and I think if you put this heatpipe and fins arrangement next to a GTR, it probably is the same and so shroud and backplate have changed but this part not so much.

THey made that middle plate steve gets out at 15:45 because most probably that heatsink design is shared with vega 56. On Vega's case, there is no need for that plate (or more like: it was designed first without that plate in mind and it was added later for RX 590) because the copper shim at the center touches both HBM and GPU die. On this card they needed to cool the GDDR5 memory so they added another piece that most likely if it were there in the first place and wasnt detachable, would have interfered with Vega 56's VRM solution.

My only guess for the steel plate is to insulate it from the direct heat of GPU's temps. The block gets hot very quick, and I'm sure the memory will eventually get to the same temp, but it prevents it from the quick temp changes which might affect the functionality. So basically, it's a buffer that works like an inductor does in an electric circuit to stabilize the voltage, but instead for heat.

From a thermal management point, stainless steel being a poor thermal conductor should allow the heat pipes to do their thing and take the heat straight to the fans. If you replace the stainless steel with a better thermal conductor, it will just trap the heat where you don't want it, right near the GPU, and also between the fans where the airflow is poor. It looks like thermal flow control rather than poor design.
@zontarr22-zon6 жыл бұрын
Cray Ze Ape, just about to say the same. But also because steel does not bent at those temps, the cards produces, it will apply the same pressure around the memory modules.
@crayzeape22306 жыл бұрын
@@zontarr22-zon I had initially thought the aluminium section was a stainless steel insert and the comment was based on that error. You're likely correct in assuming the stainless steel was used as extra support due to the pressure applied to components it's cooling.
