Mainstream Western media is covering China's changes to housing, education, and financial regulation policies with much chagrin. In a capitalist system with profit as the main goal, restricting for-profit education and housing speculation would be a negative. In China, reducing inequality and bringing "common prosperity" are now the official goals.
Tings Chak, researcher at the Tricontinental Institute & a member of @DongshengNews collective, breaks down the major shifts in Chinese politics.

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape - controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.
We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities - because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.
People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.
We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.

A lot of people criticize that china is cracking down on billionaires, but think about it. Would you rather the government be in charge or the billionaires? They are telling the billionaires that yes you can have the money, but you need to know youre not in charge of the country the government is. Reason this crackdown will never happen here in US is because we have this beautiful thing called "lobbying", legalized bribery that billionaires use to control the elected politicians. This can never happen in China because they keep their rich in place.

The Chinese Communist Party wants no other type of thinking but theirs. So, explain to me, how are the Communists any different than those billionaires? By the way, when China had no billionaires, the people were well controlled and poor. When the Communists backed off and people began to think for themselves, China exploded in economic growth and even in the arts. Now that the Communists are back to controlling, both the economy and the arts are withering. Doesn't sound like progress to me.

@@AQuietNight You should look at closely to who and what are targets for the crack down. Billionaires, such as Huawei, DJI are not, why? Because they're not cozy to the west. I'm a foreigner (Mexican) living in China. When the news broke out, many foreigners who were working illegally lost their jobs, but to be completely honest, it doesn't even hurt them that much, or the owners of these private training centres. All the kids in here go through hell just to have a high grade in their 高考 (college entrance examination). I lost a lot of opportunity to work and make a better living, but I also understand that the education in China was being privatized by these companies with very sketchy work ethics. Education had been in fact kidnapped by capital. I fully support this policy, even if it means I lose some of my livelihood.

@@Commievn most of what you said are wrong, there’s censorship but they still can access KZbin and all through vpn, freedom of speech comes with freedom of lies. There have been many protests if you follow other news outlet, recently student protest on a certain college and Evergrande. The video games rules applied for only online games and for under 18, they still can play offline games unlimited. As for above 18 there’s no restrictions. The Uyghurs, sigh….. this issue has been debunked by many, recently AP published an article saying that there’s no oppression in fact the lives of Uyghurs have improved a lot. Minorities in China were exempted from 1 child policy, have easier access to Uni, many of Uni has halal section, the buildings in Xinjiang are written in Uyghur language first then Chinese, China’s bank notes have 5 diff languages since decades ago. I think it’s best to find other outlet other than mainstream western media including Dw or Al Jazeera. Since I found out the lies they spread about China I follow these channels: the geopolitics in conflict show, the new atlas, Numuves, this one, Daniel Dumbrill, Cyrus Janssen. If you want to know how Muslims are treated Abdullah in China also Mahzaib vlog can show you.
@chef4797

Can you give me evidence of Uyghur suppression? Is it suppression to invest in Xinjiang? Who is most of the leadership in Xinjiang? What language do most leaders speak in Xinjiang? Is it suppression of minorities to : lower entrance exams for university for them? To not force them to adopt the one child policy law when it was in use? Whether you realize it or not you are taking the typical liberal Western arguments of applying your cultural values to the history and material conditions of a completely different culture and criticizing it when it does not meet YOUR standards. That right there is jingoistic and a form when done on the scale the US is doing it a type of aggression. If you know Chinese history, over 1000 years, the humiliation they faced from the West for over 100 years, and the struggle China has had then you will know there have to be priorities and China prioritized such things as lifting most of its people out of poverty and essentially eradicating the lowest forms of poverty. China accomplished that while fending off aggressive advances of imperialism to try and force China to adopt economic and political models more commonly found in the west, to open up China under terms where it would have been exploited just as it was before. China collectively stopped that and set its own course no easy feat considering the US has been involved in over 64 regime changes by coup, invasion or other means. Michael Parenti said, "Give me the revolution that feeds the children". China is that revolution. In the US, there is no real free press or organization that is useful in making real change. Sure, people there can say what they want but at the end of the day it is the wealthy elite and corporations that run the show. Even the Economist lists the US as a flawed democracy. I recommend Vijay Prashad's book Washington Bullets, where it is shown the US used extremist Islam as a way to counter communism. Many of the injustices around the world today can be traced back to the empire known as the USA. It is vitally important for the planet and the future of humanity that a powerful nation counter that imperialism, thank you China. While I do not agree with all Chinese policies neither do many Chinese and their dissent is voices in their social media and elsewhere to a great extent. The advantage of socialist skewed nations is they understand political ecology, here in Norway so do we and therefore we organize just as they do in China. There is surely more diversity of opinion in China that is actualized into results than in places such as the USA. For example, China has seen to it that about 95 percent of the population has basic health insurance on one hand, while on the other China produces some of the World's most successful companies operating under incredibly intensive capitalist principles. In many examples, China and Norway (where I live) have a lot in common and we accomplished much of this by working together as a society.

A Chinese prime Minister Wang Anshi, describing his New Policy to his peers once said: ”因天下之力,以生天下之财;取天下之财,以供天下之费" It translates to: “Mobilize the combined [production] power and resources of all in our nation, to produce the wealth for the nation. Use the wealth of the nation to ensure the necessities of the people ”" ---Have a guess when that socialistic policy statement was made. 1069 AD in Song dynasty, yes nearly 1000 years ago, so when Europe were busy with Crusades, China was experimenting with socialist policies. China has ALWAYS been socialistic, which is why modern communism and socialism adapted so well within the Chinese context. China's story with socialism in a political sense, actually started during the land reforms of Usurper Wang Mang's Xin Dynasty in the year 9AD.

@@stephenkolostyak4087 That is where you are wrong. Back in those days, what CHina considered the world were CHina itself and the regions around China. They did not consider the middle east or Africa as theirs unlike the west. The current aggression the western media likes to talk up about CHina is overblown. China has never tried to conquer Korea. Korea was a vassal state but was free to rule themselves. Go to the Chosun Palace in Seoul, the whole palace is littered with traditional Chinese writing. China could have conquered South East Asia but never did. China never sent an army down Malaysia, Thailand or even Indonesia to conquer them when they could have easily done so. These countries were all neighbours with CHina for over 5000 years. First time SEA saw the white man, they got conquered. With regards to Tibet, Tibet was already part of China since before the US was founded. If you want to talk about freeing Tibet, the US should give back California and Texas to Mexico and give Hawaii self rule. Typical ignorant fool, dont know much about Chinese history but still want to spout your nonsense. Vietnam is a bit more complicated. But today, these 2 countries dont really have much of an issue, so your point? Read up on China and Taiwan and you can easily realize Taiwan is part of China. Even the Taiwanese government regards itself as the true government of entire China. You think Taiwan wants independence? No they using USA so that they may eventually rule the whole of China. Its even in the Taiwanese constitution that they are the true legitimate government of all CHina, Tibet, Xinjiang, HK and Macau. They even have bigger claims of the SCS than CHina. It seems that China wants to create an environment where people can still get rich but having to do it in a way that is “good for the society as a whole”. That is consistent with 2000 years of Confucian thought. From this angle you can understand the underlying thread of all these recent “crackdowns”. It is trying to solve the age-old issue of common prosperity that US is unable to do anything about. PS this Chinese lady is very knowledgeable and knows what she’s talking about.

Another interesting aspect is that unlike in the US you don’t yet have an entrenched oligarchy who pass down generational wealth to their children, because these first generations are the ones who got rich. I don’t know what the government plans to do, but I hope they will use this opportunity to implement an erosive estate tax that does not allow a class of inherited billionaires to emerge.

"Nowhere do politicians form a more separate, powerful section of the nation than in North America. There, each of the two great parties which alternately succeed each other in power is itself in turn controlled by people who make a business of politics, who speculate on seats in the legislative assemblies of the Union as well as of the separate states, or who make a living by carrying on agitation for their party and on its victory are rewarded with positions. It is well known that the Americans have been striving for 30 years to shake off this yoke, which has become intolerable, and that in spite of all they can do they continue to sink ever deeper in this swamp of corruption. It is precisely in America that we see best how there takes place this process of the state power making itself independent in relation to society, whose mere instrument it was originally intended to be. Here there exists no dynasty, no nobility, no standing army, beyond the few men keeping watch on the Indians, no bureaucracy with permanent posts or the right to pensions. and nevertheless we find here two great gangs of political speculators, who alternately take possession of the state power and exploit it by the most corrupt means and for the most corrupt ends - and the nation is powerless against these two great cartels of politicians, who are ostensibly its servants, but in reality exploit and plunder it." - Friedrich Engels

The real problem of the private education system is the after school system, not private school with normal education. So it extracts the resources from the public education system and lower the education quality in public education system. The teachers are doing two jobs and spending less interest and energy in public system. It's not just increase the unfairness to poor students.

Generally one sees such social and communitarian activities in most south east asian countries as well as some middle eastern countries. Even Spore is in such a category being 3/4 of a mini socialist republican state.Als I totally agree that its totally cultural especially where for centuries Chinese culture was far reaching in the asian region. For chinese it can be said its in the DNA. I would think the old puritan ethos of hardwork and family was similar too.

Hi BT News, considering that Xi Jinping is probably going pop up frequently in your programme, I thought it's good to let you know that the his surname, Xi, should be pronounced like a short "see" in English. Hence the full name is pronounced "See Chin Ping". Having a "x-" sound like that in "xylophone" is quite jarring to the ear. Thanks for your continuous effort to shed light on the realities in China, free of neoliberalist bias!

China do not want to creates to many billionaires, literally creating imbalances in the societies. When any economy's are only serving the top 1% like what Trump's did, lowering taxes for these Rich tycoons. If these tycoons are not paying taxes, middle classes are paying on behalf of these tycoons. With these tax collection from these middle classes,it is enough to run the country's, insufficient for development, borrowing more, where deficit starts from here. For any economies, the utmost importance is to create more middle classes, which means moving more the bottoms and unfortunate into middle class. With that visions, the countries will be more harmonious and peaceful, basically eliminating poverty's.
