Last year the Economist called Taiwan the most dangerous place on earth. Is this true? What will Xi Jinping do about Taiwan? Is there a realistic chance at reunification? Or will Taiwan formally become independent? Time to study some history and also see what the majority of Taiwanese think about their future.

Cyrus, the youths in Taiwan are not fools or manipulated. They have seen first hand how 1 country 2 systems turned into National Security Laws in Hong Kong. They have seen how Beijing was intolerant to democracy and freedoms (that Taiwanese now enjoy). The choice of DPP by Taiwanese was hardly a surprise.

We as overseas chinese are proud of our history, and couple with the great achievement by the govt of China, majority of us would love to see all Chinese unite as one. Bear in mind, that is only possible when the Chinese govt is strong. For the people of Taiwan, who basically are Chinese, sharing the same culture and customs and living supposedly a former province of China, it would not be a good idea to go for independence. Going back to the motherland is obviously the best choice, where mom would pour in all the love lost previously. Jia you China, you are the safest and most prosperous country to live in.

According to _Hong Kong Basic Law Article 23_ (香港基本法第二十三條), Hong Kong shall enact laws to *prohibit any act of treason, secession, sedition, subversion* against the Central People's Government, or theft of state secrets, to prohibit foreign political organizations or bodies from conducting political activities in the Region, and to prohibit political organizations or bodies of the Region from establishing ties with foreign political organizations or bodies. I'm Taiwanese, sharing a few thoughts: 1. As long as Taiwan declares independence, China will 100% launch a war against Taiwan. 2. The reason why the United States wants to confront China is that it does not allow any country to threaten its hegemony. From the Soviet Union after World War II to Japan after the 1980s, as long as there is any military or economic capability to threaten the status of the United States, the United States will destroyed the opponent. The China challenged this time is an opponent at a completely different level. After decades of keeping a low profile, it has comprehensive national strengths such as military, technology, and economy. In addition, the quality of its population is getting better and better, especially under the rule of elites, coupled with long-term strategies. Consistently, it is impossible for the United States to have a full-scale war with China. This is the basic common sense in the age of nuclear weapons. 3. How strong is the Taliban military? How big is the land of Afghanistan? What is the population? The results of it? From this perspective, how should the United States face China, which is hundreds of times more powerful? Please believe that Taiwan is China's core interest. Even if Taiwan will resist with the support of the United States (I admit that I don't know the outcome of the war), China's will to unify Taiwan is absolutely higher than the Taliban's will to restore the country in Afghanistan. Asia's No. 1 statesman, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the founding Prime Minister of Singapore, once pointed out how much help the United States can give Taiwan? When China launches a war of reunification, even if it cannot take Taiwan for a while, China will launch armed conflicts again and again. China's determination to unify Taiwan is absolutely beyond what the United States can bear. 4. The US's positioning of Taiwan is to see Taiwan as a chess piece to drag China's development. Freedom and democracy have always been the hallucinogens for the economic colonization of the Western world in modern times. The US will always proceed from its own national interests. 5. The Anglo-Saxon-dominated Western powers that dominate the world have been united for a long time, but they have tried their best to divide other races. Look at Europe, the Middle East, the Korean Peninsula, and Vietnam. Why don’t you see this clearly? ? I am Taiwanese, the blood, genes, religious beliefs, personality and values in my body, The historical background and cultural roots of growth are the same as those of the Chinese. Why do I hope that China can be peacefully reunified, because I cannot stand the hegemony of the United States. For example, the rules of free trade are set by the Western world. When the United States Exporting goods to us requires us to open up, and then affects our national economy. The United States maintains that this is the exchange of goods under free trade, which has advantages and disadvantages, but when we sell goods to the United States and affect American industries, the United States will Advocating the provisions against dumping and sanctioning us, do Taiwanese still remember Section 301? We Taiwanese or the government can only swallow our voices because we need the support of the United States? But when I saw that the United States used the same method to impose trade sanctions on China more than ten years ago, China took countermeasures, and I decided at that time who I wanted to be. 6. The United States has long crossed national barriers with popular culture (such as Hollywood movies, McDonald's). I also believed that the United States was a beautiful country and that the value of democracy was the end of history as Professor Fukuyama said. . But the governance incompetence brought about by American-style democracy, the United States itself is full of serious problems such as drugs, homeless people, guns, etc. Dear Taiwanese people, if you really understand, you will not want to be an American. 7. Two hundred and thirty years ago, the British ambassador Macartney, met with the Chinese emperor. The Chinese emperor's ignorance and arrogance caused China to decline for two hundred years. But this is the interesting part of history. After China's reform and opening up in 1978, In the face of the US-dominated West, the heart is full of awe and respect, and they devote themselves to learning the strengths of the West; however, today the West is full of ignorance and arrogance toward China, so the reappearance of the historical scene determines the difference between the rise of China and the decline of the United States. The general trend.
@timchu1580
@timchu1580 2 жыл бұрын
add another point: In fact, modern China does not have the so-called "export revolution" that the Soviet Union advocated in the past. China just wants to develop its own country well and gain a certain degree of national dignity. It has never been in China's DNA to launch foreign wars. In the case of equality and mutual respect between countries, China will not make irresponsible remarks to the West, so China simply hopes that the West will not use its own values to ask China to accept it. At this stage, most Chinese people feel honored and satisfied with the country. What Chinese people want is never democracy, but continuous improvement of life. In addition, for the word "freedom" that the West is good at, please go to see the street scene of Kensington Street in Philadelphia, USA! When the United States is like China, the elderly, the weak, women and children can walk outside without fear and safety 24 hours a day, and then talk to China about freedom!

Hi Cyrus, I agree with most of your points but I would like to offer something more. 1. Taiwan will be inevitably unified with mainland China and this is going to be very soon. My reason is this: China already planned the project to build an underground subway from Fujian to Taiwan before 2035 and that project will take at least 10 years to complete. Taiwan must be unified in order to complete the project and China always get things done according to the timeline. In other words, China has decided a complete unification in 2025 at latest. 2. A peaceful dialogue with Taiwan for unification is almost impossible since the Taiwan political parties and the general public have a strong anti-China mindset. This is the consensus in China that a peaceful unification is very unlikely to happen and the right to use military force to push reunification must be preserved. However, I don't believe that a direct military confrontation will happen. It is very likely to be a military pressure put on Taiwan in order to force a unification dialogue. This will include surrounding Taiwan with military and sending missiles to destroy Taiwan's key military facilities. 3. The main reason why the US is so interested in Taiwan is because Taiwan is at the centre of the island chain designed by the US to surround and contain China militarily. If Taiwan is unified with China, the first Chain will be broken so the US wants Taiwan to be separated from China forever. Taiwan is also an important bargaining chip for the US to negotiate with China because it is a major way for the US to meddle in China's internal affair. Of course there are some other factors like money, as you mentioned, and the semi-conductor industry (TSMC).

Nicely said. I think what Cyrus didn't mention in his analysis (and perhaps wouldn't have enough of a grasp of simply bc he's not Chinese) is the determination of the Chinese people to even risk economical interest in order to maintain their security under imperialist aggression. Taiwan is pulling a LOT of stupid cards and is potentially willing to invite the US to aggravate the situation, and that's simply intolerable. Military solution is a BOTTOM LINE. Frankly, whether military reunification happens or not, the good ol' "buddy-buddy" relation between China and the US that Cyrus is so fond of is simply gone, and there's no salvaging it by repeating the early 2000s and 2010s narrative. The DPP and Tsai Ing Wen don't even support independence. This is Chinese and Western Propaganda🤣 the DPP already thinks that Taiwan is independent as the Republic of China. When talking about independence most people refer to台独, which means to change the constitution and establish Taiwan as a country (台湾国)。 But the current government doesn't support this. Taiwanese politics is much more complex than Pro-Independence or Pro Unification, there is a lot in between. Take for example the New Power Party who strongly supports changing the constitution and establishing Taiwan as a country. Instead of believing random media and governments, people should do their own research on Taiwan, it's political parties and their ideologies and one would find that the DPP is not that pro independence as most people think. Even the Vice President William Lai said:"Taiwan is already independent as the Republic of China, there is no need to push for further formal independence". Doesn't sound to me like someone that wants to push for independence. The whole Taiwan issue is blown up out of proportion by the West and even Mainland China

When Dr. Sun died, Chiang became the KMT leader and started purging/killing the Communists (who were then working together with KMT under Dr. Sun's leadership). Chiang wanted to eliminate the communists which he deem to be the biggest threat and he used his wife to sweet talked the US Congress for support and money which he spend most of it to strengthen his grip and lavish himself and his cronies, with luxuries and grandiose (while the rest of the population lived in devastating near death poverty). He almost wiped the Red Army out if they had not successfully escaped through tremendous hardship in successfully completing the incredible & historical Long March. Finally, when defeated in the civil war, Chiang and his rich supporters including the Green Gang escaped to Taiwan with their ill gained riches and whatever national treasures they could carried. On the way to board the ships, they stopped by the central bank and carted away all the gold stored there. In Taiwan, he suppressed the locals by severe force and introduced martial laws to secured his power. The Green Gang continue to flourish in Taiwan, possibly, closely working with the Yakuza too (In mainland China, no sign/existence of organized criminal syndicates). Green Party is currently in power and until the rich, powerful or underworld elites, are displaced, they will continue to resist unification, simply because, they don't want to lose their power, control and riches, the same as, the Yakuza, the Mafia, the drug lords etc. will never give up their turf. Needless to say, no prize for guessing who is the global "gangster" and who are the powerful elites that are behind them. Cheers.

@@christianmarriott3696 Socially, Americans have never been more divided than they are today. The increase in freedom of speech isn't accompanied by an increase in taking responsibility. Almost every issue is polarised and rights are over-inflated and conflict with those with different views. The rights of anti-immigration clash with those pro-immigration. Those of religious people clash with the non-religious. LGBT versus homophobic. Vaccinated people vs anti-vaxxers. Those wanting to defund the police vs those who don't. Those pro-Trump vs those who are against. The Democrats vs the Republicans. The Left vs the Right. All this division is tearing the US apart from within. Economically, over the last 4 decades in America, the bottom 50% of income groups in America have grown poorer and the income gap in America is increasing. Landlords evict tenants who are unable to pay the rent, increasing poverty and homelessness. Fresh graduates are unable to find jobs, yet they're already shackled by debt and need to pay off their student loan. Politically, the American democratic institutions are failing from within. Many Trump supporters believe that the election was stolen (whether real or perceived) and this displays a distrust in institutions of democracy. Biden's policies like his infrastructure bill face roadblocks in Congress (surprisingly, from his own party, the Democrats) and the U.S global sphere of influence is retreating, as US allies lose trust in the USA putting their own American interests ahead of their allies. Cyrus, thank-you for discussing this most timely issue. As an ABC myself, my extended family is spread over the US, Taiwan, China and HK. Both grandfathers were Chinese born, one an army general and the other, an airforce colonel. Both were part of the KMT gov't and fled to Taiwan in 49'. Both believed in the eventual liberation of "Communist China", a view that they held to their graves. In contradistinction to US propaganda, you are absolutely "spot-on" regarding Taiwan's (ROC) ambivalence with regard to the reunification of Taiwan & China. Of course my family in Taiwan are very much in the KMT camp and strongly opposed to the DPP (President Tsai) who is pushing an independence agenda which most definitely doesn't reflect the majority of her constituency. As a child I remember my uncles very much supporting the KMT view about reunification and vehemently believed that they were all Chinese rather than Taiwanese as the language, culture and history (except for the 50 years of Japanese occupation) supported that contention. Over the years, they would actually return to Taiwan to vote for the KMT presidential candidates. It is clear to me that the US and President Tsai Engwen are stoking the flames of independence in an effort to "poke the Dragon" into some belligerent action. You also correctly stated that the US has a vested interest in selling arms to a wealthy Taiwan. At this point, China appears to be "sabre-rattling" with military planes and ships but does not wish to engage in a violent "take-over." China vehemently believes that this is nothing more than interference and wishes to continue to focus on its economic development. I strongly believe this is the case, and China has demonstrated extraordinary restraint by refusing to be drawn into a potentially devastating war. BTW, my grandfater, like CKS (Jiang Jieshi) were both from Ningbo. My grandfather served as his personal secretary and would later become a general in the KMT army. Although CKS could speak some English and Mandarin, it was almost unintelligible due to his heavy Zhejiang accent. I understood that his American educated wife Soong Meiling served as his English intepreter.

Taiwan can afford to stubbornly hold out because of perceived U.S military support. Although the mainland needs to defend our sovereignty, the mainland government needs to exercise restraint as much as possible and not get suckered into starting a pointless war over Taiwan. Time is on China's side, since the US is in *decline* and China is *rising.* As long as peace prevails, China will eventually cross this dangerous threshold after which the U.S would have declined to the point where they can no longer challenge China's rise, at which Taiwan's backing would be gone and reunification is inevitable.

I am for the reunification of China and Taiwan. Taiwan is part of China. Even the constitution of Taiwan says China and Taiwan are one country. If Taiwan could, Taiwan would make China under Taiwan and make it one China. When I was in grade school, everyday before the flag raising ceremony, I would listen to our principal about Taiwan’s dream and call to reconquer China 反攻大陸。 it was Chiang Kai Shek dream to reconquer China. That’s why their constitution states that China is part of Taiwan. Cyrus, I don’t think Chiang Kai Shek spoke English, let alone spoke fluently. It was his wife, Soong Mei Ling who spoke English fluently because she was educated in the US. Try to read the story of the Soong sisters and their only brother. It’s their brother and son who befriended Franklin Roosevelt and pledged to the US missionary that they would make Taiwan turn into a Christian nation, although in reality, they pocketed the funding of the Christian missionary groups. From my own view as a Taiwanese, Taiwan is in growing risk as the DPP pushes its separatism narrative against the one China policy. The media outlets, online platforms, social media, and even school books are all under heavy influence and control of the DPP government to further demonizing mainland China and denying its own roots and connections using a fabricated historical stand point. Although taking Taiwan by force may not be the greatest interest of the China government, the possibility of an alternative approach is getting lower by time, since America is still trying to prevent a peaceful reunification of the two as it will further strengthen China's influence in south east Asia, and makes it harder for America to apply its influence in the region.

Hey Cyrus! I love your stuff! I’m a pretty serious late life “Sino-phile,” and while I enjoy all of my online influencers, I most absolutely understand the importance of the work you do and you really articulate the issues fairly and accessibly! I think that many Americans would profit from an understanding and awareness of “Confucianism,” even more than Communism. China has never had an experience of “democracy,” other than the classic “peasant’s revolt,” and these have, probably to everyone’s relief, inevitably led to a change of Dynasty, and often to an improved society. China, pre or post Confucius, and also in the Communist era, has relied upon “meritocracy,” to carry the day, and it seems that after 4 or 5 millennia, they may be on to something! Democracy apparently will only work if the participants genuinely agree negotiate and compromise, and, well, we can see how that seems to be playing out! The only thing that inspires me with any real hope that it might contain some germ of human value is the vehemence that conservatives are focusing on suppressing the vote! CAN democracy work? Mmm, unicameral, proportional representation, like in many European and other “low profile” countries, perhaps. A nominal “democracy” based on the British model with the Senate/House of Lords “wrench in the works,” “money equals speech” oligarchal stranglehold, ah, not so much! I have to say, while I know that some people think of him as a egomaniacal despot (I think we have one of those somewhere around here… Florida is it? You’re from there…), I truly believe that Xi Jinping is a Confucian “superior individual” (OK, like America, China has had a problem with sexism, going back to Confucius and before, but significantly, the Communists seem to always have that issue on their agenda, and it IS changing! Go Eileen Wu!). I hope I don’t get in trouble for saying this, but is it just me, or is Xi slowly morphing into a great big lovable Panda bear? That’s the vibe I get, and I have a suspicion that many or most Chinese harbor similar feelings toward him. I have seen President Xi visit the homes of very poor rural farmers and peasants in their homes and sharing their modest meals, and it’s the real thing, there is no “photo-op” spin! While I can envision “Sleepy Joe” might do such a thing, if the DNC thought there were votes in it, as far as that being I’ll refer to here as “Pompous POTUS,” I think we can safely ascribe “a snowballs chance in Hades,” if you follow me. I’ve been following you since before you predicted Meng Wenzhou’s inevitable release, and you certainly nailed that! Keep up the great work my friend! -Namaste, Glenn C. B. Jones One quibble: I’d prefer you did not front your posts with the (if I may say, please forgive!) the open mouthed, kind of “dopey faced” pic. It’s not a good look for you! You have a very honest face (which makes me want to buy dental hygiene products and VPN’s!) and VERY important work (world peace, if I’m not mistaken?), and I’m loathe that anyone should consider you a “joker” or “zany.” So “A nod’s as as good as a wink,” OK my friend? Thanks Cyrus, you too are most definitely “the REAL thing,” and we need your input more than ever! - Go Eileen Wu!!!

Cyrus, you missed on a very important point. After WWII, KMT represented China in the peace talks as on the side of the victorious allies. Chiang pushed hard for Taiwan to be returned to China however, the US allowed Japan to maintain a presence on the island, under US supervision. The current atmosphere in Taiwan is a chess move by the US since the end of WWII. The goal of the US government was and will always be enslaving those in China whether ruled by KMT or CPC, for the benefit of the US. Both Stalin and Roosevelt wanted to split China up whereas Northern China would be influenced by the USSR and Southern China would be influenced by the US. This was taught in our history classes at university in Canada. This is why we even have this Taiwan Question in modern day.

I am a HK Chinese. Cyrus has done a lot of work and he is impartial. Most of what he said is right. But I have to correct, Chiang failed not because his military incompetence. It was corruption within Chiang's camp. Very few people knew that the success of Mao over Chiang was due to a really silly mistake made by the US government. Xi cannot stay "as long as he likes" as the president of China. He continuation still depends on the State Council or more precisely a group of old folks who still very much controls the Party. I totally agree with Cyrus that China will not take Taiwan by force but only on condition that US do not cross the border. America is a war like country as mentioned by Cyrus. Through threat of China's invasion, they can sell more arms to Taiwan and neighboring country such as Australia and Japan. Same as what they are doing in Ukraine. 1. You didn't mention Taiwan's formal name inherited from its 1947 constitution: Republic of China. You didn't explain what is the 1992 Consensus across the Straight. One scenario that reunification will be triggered is the current ROC constitution being abolished by DPP (to further independence). 2. The poll you cited from the Commonwealth Magazine has manipulated the setting of the options, causing self-contradiction. 3. Foreign interference to support Taiwan (specifically, DPP) will trigger and expedite the process of reunification as well. 4. In theory, one need to distinguish the concepts of de facto rule vs de jure sovereignty (the latter is determined by diplomatic recognition by the majority of countries). After UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, ROC is no longer representing China in the UN and it has no formal diplomatic relationship with most countries. The ROC constitution, however, claims the sovereignty of mainland China, islands of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu, etc. which is the same as PRC. The difference of sovereignty claims was in the recognition of Mongolia independence under Soviet influence. ROC/KMT & Chiang himself had a treaty with USSR which recognized the independence of Mongolia until 1949, then denied this treaty after having lost the civil war.

You missed out that Chiang was trained in the officer school of the Imperial Military College in Japan. The democratic move was started with the Beijing University Movement and motioned by Sun Yat Sen, and Chiang, an opportunist, divorced his wife, "converted" to Christianity to cozy up to the then tycoon Charlie Sung. The father in law of Sun Yat Sen. He caught the 2nd daughter Sung Mei Ling who, partnered him in coaxing the support of US for the war effort against Imperial Japan and formed an alliance with Mao Ze Dong. But he turned his back on Mao and the people of China and had his feudal system local militarize militia centrally congregate their command in Chongqing and started the Whampoa Military College. Trying to get a hold of the whole army without an air force for his war effort on destroying the popular people's uprising instead and let the Japanese raped Nanjing and pulled out his forces to allow the Japanese take Shanghai. When the Japanese surrendered, he focussed his efforts on destroying the ill armed Mao forces which has the people's support and many rose up to fight the KMT including people who will charged at the corrupt armies with knives. Chiang went on an assassination spree of all opposition leaders and now famously made into a movie named Bodyguards and Assassins. In truth, the people of China saw Chiang as what he actually was, nothing but an opportunity grabbing traitor to democracy and a sell out turn coat that delivered death via their Japanese allies and American bullets to their own 同胞 In the ensuing 4 year civil war, he lied to his forces that they were moving to a new area of operations. This is what happened to Professor of Philosophy at Taiwan University Dr. Yan Zu Zheng's grandfather, who was told thus. He packed a few day's food for his mother and when to deploy and told his family he would be home soon. But they were forced on ships and shipped to Taiwan. My uncle and father lived through this period. When I visited him, my uncle, who was retired as a school principal in the 80s at Kaohsiung, he told of how the KMT executed landlords and confiscated all their lands to give to their soldiers and annexed the aborigines to the mountains and considered no civil rights to them as they are not considered humans by the KMT. Then he went of a 30 years educational and military rule of preparing the people to attack and take back China. This only scaled back by his son Jiang Jin Guo when he took office as president. I served and trained with the Taiwanese Army for years..... lived in their camps and wore their uniform from 1984 to 1991. Forget all the crap that is being paddled by the Americans who cannot even defend their retail shops and freight trains from being looted and where people are legalised to rob people as long as the loot is less than $950. Then you have a president Li Deng Hui that tells the Taiwanese people that he is a Japanese who colonized them for 50 years. If you understand a little bit of what went on in my father's time, you will know the pack of lies now being brainwashed into the young of the island in their compulsory public school system. It is most despicable and cruel to have Chinese kill Chinese. As if the millions that Chiang killed with American weapons aren't enough, now they need to bleed more of their own brother's blood using more efficient American weapons?

I disagree with your description of Chiang as some pro-Western ruler. The US hated Chiang because he refused to commit to US interests like resisting Japan, and instead hoarded weapons for the civil war against the Communists. Chiang refused to give Stilwell control of the Chinese armed forces, and he signed a treaty with the Soviet Union. Chiang also disagreed with FDR’s vision of being America’s foothold in East Asia, which is why he refused America’s offer to make Vietnam part of China. Chiang’s goal was the play the two future victors, the US and USSR, against each other so he could get support from both sides. Also, Chiang didn’t speak English.

Agreed. Taiwan's ability to stubbornly hold out is because of perceived American support. However, it's no secret today that the United States is in *decline* and China is *rising.* As long as peace prevails, the United States will eventually weaken to the point when they can no longer afford to challenge China's rise. When that happens, Taiwan's backing would be gone, and with the U.S out of the equation, reunification with the mainland would occur. Time is on China's side. As long as the mainland is patient and doesn't get sucked into a war, Taiwan will eventually be reunified with the mainland, once their perceived U.S backing is gone.

Come to think of it, much of Taiwan's economy growth from 1950-1980 was accomplished under the authoritarian single-party KMT rule. Taiwan had been under authoritarian single-party KMT rule for *more than half its life.* For decades the KMT ruled Taiwan with iron fist and Chiang kai-shek was a dictator who jailed and executed dissidents and political rivals (whether real or perceived) in a period known as _White Terror_ (白色恐怖) and imposed martial law on Taiwan for more than *38 years,* which was qualified as "the longest imposition of martial law by a regime anywhere in the world" at that time. But under authoritarian single-party KMT rule, Taiwan actually flourished and prospered, in what's known as the _Taiwan Miracle_ (台湾奇迹). Only in the late 1990s, when democracy was introduced (because USA threatened to cut off weapons sales to Taiwan) did Taiwan's economic growth became more modest. Since then, Taiwan's economy has stagnated, wages are stagnant, cost of living is rising, unemployment is rising and Taiwan graduates are increasingly seeking jobs abroad, such as in Singapore or mainland China.

Japan returned Taiwan to China in 1945 at the end of World War 2. The nationalist government lost the civil war and retreated to Taiwan in 1949. Chiang Kai-shek was a warlord. I think he lost because he lost the general supports from people of China. KMT was incredible cruel and corrupt. Most of their supporters were landlords and rich people. Mao on the other hand were supported mostly by peasants. So if you consider one China policy, Taiwan should be part of China because it was returned to China. Of course Americans would play word game since ROC was the Chinese government at the end of world war 2. Japan and US are more than happy to use Taiwan to destabilize Hong Kong. But US is not going to defend Taiwan. More than likely US will try to get Japan, Australia or even NATO involved. Japan doesn't have a lot of friends in Asia consider what they did in Asia during World War 2. And Japan would prefer to see a war at Taiwan strait than near Japanese strait. So they will continue to push the conflict in Taiwan.

To the best of my recollection, China stated three metrics they are using for determining whether reunification by any means will be deployed. They are: - Taiwan declaring independence. - US recognizing Taiwan's independence. - No possibility of peaceful reunification. They did not state clearly what constitutes as Taiwan declaring independence. Does Taiwan setting up diplomatic offices with the US, Japan, Lithuania, Latvia, Australia or the UK, without out right declaring independence, constitutes as "declaring" independence? Does Taiwan being represented in the UN in some official capacity constitutes as "declaring" independence? Does Taiwan DPP's changing of all of its school text books to remove all references to the local population's connection with their ancestry and ancestral land, and claiming that many of them are actually descendants of Japanese colonizers while Taiwan was under their occupation? Does Japan's recognition of Taiwan as an independent nation constitute as "declaration" of Taiwan independence? Does any and/or all of the above stretching into the future indefinitely constitute as "No possibility of peaceful reunification"? These are questions being reviewed daily based on the circumstances on the ground. Just the other day, a US article calling for formerly setting up a Taiwan representative office with the US was printed. Both Republican and Democrats in the US congress's budget and foreign policy committee have members who fiercely want to challenge the "One China" policy and take the step to set-up such an office and see if that would be China's bottom line, i.e., that one or more of the above three conditions have in fact come to past. I am not worried about reunification, as that will be the outcome whether through war or peaceful means. China and the Chinese people, of which Taiwan constitutes just over one percent of the entire Chinese population, want and will have reunification one way or another. The ball is squarely in the hands of the US, Japan, and Taiwan's DPP. As of this writing, they are still pushing the line as close as they can without out-right declaring independence.
@elektrotehnik94
@elektrotehnik94 2 жыл бұрын
"I am not worried about reunification, as that will be the outcome whether through war or peaceful means. " --> NO, and this is why USA is there, militarily. One-third of why USA supports Taiwan is because USA believes Taiwan should have a free choice; whether it wants to be its own country, with its own decisions, or politically united with China. Without the fear of China's invasion. The second-third is geo-political and the last-third is protecting other USA allies in the area from China's military subjugation (like Japan, Australia and so on). Taiwan is not the property of China. Until China understands that & accepts Taiwan's free choice, expect USA to be there, as they should be. Freedom of choice (as far as we can manage it) above all.

It is currently already a territory of China as recognised by international law and it will remain a territory of China irrespective of what the government or people of Taiwan wish to claim. If the US and/or Taiwan rogue government have the guts, claim the territory as their own today and claim the country's independence. To my knowledge, a top US military official admitted that the PLA will be able to liberate Taiwan in 14 days. Give it a try. I long for either the US or Taiwan to make that claim. I have to say that your opinions are influenced by CCP a lot and many of them are not correct. 1. ROC was the legitimate government of China, defeated Japan in WWII and became the founding member of UN. CCP is an insurgent group and started civil war after WWII. USA saved CCP from been eliminated by ROC in the beginning. US army general George Marshall stopped Chiang's winning military action. USA was hopping China can become a 2-party political system like USA. But CCP declared 1-party dictatorship government after winning civil war and formed PRC. 2. UN resolution 2758 only allow PRC to represent China, never mentioned Taiwan is part of China. It is CCP to force all the countries to acknowledge Taiwan is part of China. Taiwan (ROC) already is an independent country, no need for "Taiwan independence". It was CCP seeking independence from China. Taiwan has never been part of PRC before. 3. CCP tried to eliminate ROC by all means due to its democratic system. CCP is afraid Chinese people will follow and ask for democracy. 4. Taiwan people don't want war but don't want CCP either. CCP threaten to blood wash Taiwan many times, but all the candidates supported by CCP lost the election. 5. If CCP is so confident that Chinese people love CCP, why not let Chinese people speak out using vote.

To be fair, the modification on school curriculum is to re-identify its cultures which undoubtedly greatly impact from China, but also its Indigenous cultures , local cultrue evloves from the first immigrants from China 500 years ago, and concurrent foreign cultures (marriage with south Asian, foreign workers etc). The ideology and worldview between the majority of Chinese and Taiwanese has tremendous differences. It is not the policy of anti-China, it is just simply protecting our identity.
