What happened was. Canada couldn’t even get a meeting with China officially, unlikely many countries that did. E.g. Australia, France, etc. Instead Trudeau bumped into Xi in the hallway, mumbled a few things. Xi obliged Trudeau to chat casually. Which should’ve been treated appropriately as a gentleman hallway conversation, not a governed discussion. But then Trudeau went to his own press and claimed he victoriously championed many serious issues and concerns to Xi’s face, he did it primarily for domestic political purposes. That’s what Xi meant when he said that’s not how the conversation was conducted. The “leak” wasn’t about national security secrets, it was about a deliberate misuse of a hallway conversation.

....it’s called an extradition treaty. The process happens quite often between both the US and Canadian legal system, probably hundreds to thousands a year. The Huawei case just became political because of the trump administration. The arrest of huawei CFO only improved Canada’s bargaining with China as China was arbitrarily detaining 2 Canadians under absolute nonsense as a childlike retaliation. They are free now. By all means, if China wants to continue acting like they can “strong arm” Canada, you will see an exile and exclusion of Chinese foreign students, investment, and a shrinking diplomatic presence in the country. Canada is already going after and continues thwart Chinese espionage and interference. Regardless of what you think, Canada is a western liberal democracy and English speaking apart of the largest economic trading block. China seeks to undermine our free, fair and open society because they despise freedom and liberty and see it as an exploit. As diplomatically weak Canada is perceived, it will always be a thorn in the side of the CCP. Albeit annoying.

@Indian Cretin Viruses+Terrorists it's not "Let's create the conditions", Xi said, 创造条件,but in Chinese (similar to many Asian culture) it's polite to omit the object and/or subject when the meaning is confrontational. So what Xi really meant was "YOU (Justin Boi) need to create the necessary conditions (before we will hold any dialogues with you next time). Xi is saying, don't call us, we will call you, when we want to, which is probably never. Compared to Xi-Biden talk, the one thing both sides agreed on is continuing contact. No such respect for Canada.
@doc0core2 жыл бұрын
@Indian Cretin Viruses+Terrorists there was an earlier meeting, and Justin was under a lot of political pressure back home for even talking to Xi, so "someone" released to the press about how Justin was all Righteous and Morally Superior in his meeting with Xi. So the second line Xi said to Trudeau (which was also translated poorly) was "that was not how the conversationg went", basically calling Trudeau (or whoever "leaked") a liar but again in that Asian not-pointing-finger way of saying things. The listener is meant to understand the meaning under the words. But Trudeau was not interest to understand, and started making a speech for the camera so Xi started turning away, and firing the "create conditions" parting shot.

Need to look at this in the broader context of Canada-China relations in recent years. Canada has clearly been doing what the US told it to do against China, including detaining the Huawei CFO a couple of years ago. That issue was finally resolved a year ago after a series of secret negotiations between the US and China. China has realized that the only Western country it needs to have serious dialogue with is the US. China doesn't waste time with Canada, UK or Aussie anymore.
