11:24 While the IC Cards are compatible with other areas, the Card first must be written with 'Local Information', to be valid with the Local system. Usually a Charge should do the trick. However having it being read by the Gate should also work. Though the Gate sometimes might use a relatively older database instead; I once charged my Pasmo in a Shimbashi Yurikamome station, however a few minutes later, the Gate's database still hasn't been updated yet with the information from the Fare Adjusment Machine, causing my card to be denied at the Gate; a few seconds later though, it worked on the Second Scan. So you need to 'fish'/pull the Local System to update itself with the current information on the Card. Anyway. I once used my Pasmo from Tokyo on a Gate in Osaka, and it worked automatically. Later on, I was also able to use it on a Vending Machine in Osaka. It doesn't work when I try to use it on a Vending Machine in Hokkaido though. And no I don't Charge it or use it on the Train. Because the use of IC Cards in Hokkaido doesn't seem to be so prevalent, I don't use my Pasmo at all in Hokkaido, prefering to use a regular Day Pass instead. I also got a couple of Suica cards. My father wanted the Penguin one… LOL For some reasons, we never really did buy that Penguin doll. Anyway. Good luck on your journeys. 80000 Yens in 4 Suica cards… That must have been quite an endeavour.

I rather think the main problem was that the ticket vending machines only accepted the Icoca cards used by JR West. They probably wouldn't even have accepted Pitapa cards, even though that is the Kansai version of Pasmo, as the tickets were called "Icoca tickets"...at least according to what that vending machine said.
