@@johnny1max113 If you don’t use it, you lose it. I have a minor in Spanish but very few people in my area speak it and would want to practice with me. I also don’t have a great opportunity to use it in my job at the moment. I haven’t chosen to “quit” Spanish. I’ve had to put other things at a higher priority. Learning a language is a lifelong commitment that takes continual practice. It’s like a muscle - without consistent use, it will atrophy.
@vorpal222 жыл бұрын
@@johnny1max113 It doesn't have to make sense to you, but here's the explanation: I was living in Canada, and then moved to Chile, where there are almost no Chinese language speakers, materials, or availability. As I didn't speak Spanish, the priority became learning Spanish instead of continuing on in Mandarin at the time: I had nobody to practice with. I also don't really like Mandarin (largely Taiwanese, as that's what I insisted on studying) entertainment, so I felt little inclination to get that listening component in by watching it. Furthermore, my job is very demanding, and requires a lot of study constantly as is. I also have a severe and chronic autoimmune disorder that really leaves me drained and sometimes unable to function for months at a time. Combine all those things, and I had higher priorities to fill the time I did have, fewer opportunities to maintain my skills, and a lack of energy due to severe and medication-resistant Crohn's Disease. Now I have moved to a community with many east Asians and my disease is currently in remission, so I am picking back up my Mandarin (which is going very well), learning Japanese, and studying Classical Chinese for fun. Really, I have no desire to learn Spanish and only got by with the basic minimums for communication, but it was a difficult time. You'd be surprised how fast it comes back. I've only been going a few weeks and I'm probably back up to 1500 characters. Also, I spend a great deal of time studying things not out of practicality, but because I have interests and enjoy challenging my mind. I also study, for example, many programming languages that I am vanishingly unlikely to use, because the experience of studying something quite different from what you are familiar with is one that broadens the mind and keeps it sharp: the process and not the end result is what is sometimes important. At least Japanese will be very useful for me to know since I like a lot of Japanese entertainment, and knowing Chinese characters is a huge help to learning Japanese.

Nope. That's the problem. People are not the same and we should simply accept that. Stop pushing unity and accept diversity. It's so silly to see humans as the same because that's the cause of so many problems. Who decides what normal is if we are all the same? Because most people think they set the standard for normal and ultimately decides others are different when we should or basically are the same. I agree that it's a nice video though. But we should move on from that stuff. We already know what we SHOULD do and act, we already know what is wrong. We just need to focus on the good parts instead of distracting us with bs. Comfortable is not good. You watching a movie with popcorn isn't good while bad stuff happens in your country. People are just distracted, because it's more comfortable. Who told you I'm like you? A movie? A song? A politician? Your mom? Because I am NOT you, and I still want to be accepted.

It's so amazing that you would devote so many years of your life respecting another culture and learning their language. What an amazing insight. I consider myself fortunate if I meet a single person at my local supermarket who is respectful of their own culture and has the ability to string a proper sentence together using their native tongue.

I've been studying Spanish for a couple years, just started Greek course, and really hope to learn Korean. No lie, this guy is my hero right now! This is so wholesome and inspiring! Plus from what I hear, mandarin is extremely difficult to learn
@CommonCommiestudios2 жыл бұрын
It's actually not as difficult as many make it out to be, yes it has its fair share of challenges but it's also very regular (few exceptions) and has almost no inflectional grammar (unlike Spanish and Greek, to give you an idea with languages you have already studied). Also, the difficulty of tones is really exaggerated, you can learn them in less than a week

@CommonCommiestudios There is actually a generally accepted ranking of the difficultly of languages provided by the language institute. Mandarin and Arabic are within the hardest ranking.

@@goeticfolkloreby which language institute? Academically Chinese is always rated hard because of the writing system, but you don't need to be literate at all to be fluent, really. Like, I write portuguese like a preschooler but I am fairly conversational.

One thing I have absolutely always loved about your videos is the impact of positive outcomes out of every small conversation over such a simple thing. You make going to watch content on KZbin a much easier task without negativity. You're making such a big impact for even easy going watchers! Keep it up, love the work! ❤️

Several of us Canadians learned Vietnamese (or tried to). One gal became quite fluent. When she was around the corner and a Vietnamese person heard her, they would be shocked wnen they saw her. She was tall, blond, blue eyed. Once a couple of young Vietnamese men started speaking badly about her. Right away she spoke in Vietnamese that she knew what they were saying. Hahaha

Xiaoma, I would be afraid to wear your “Foreigner” shirt because I don’t speak Mandarin as well as you do, and I’d not be able to handle the “objections” or gossipy comments as well and with as much grace as you did in this video. I’d love to learn Mandarin, but I’m quite a ways off from being able to defend myself as well as you did.

This reminds me of one of my best friends in high school who was hearing impaired and wore a hearing aid. She had learned to read lips but I didn't know that for all the years growing up with her. One day in high school, she was looking across the lunchroom at two girls who were talking and glancing her way. She cut her eyes and mumbled something. That's when I realized her talent. She knew every single person who gossipped about her. She was one of the wisest and kindest people I knew. Whoever was talking about her was obviously a jerk because there were nothing but nice things to say about her.♥️

❤ THIS. More languages should be introduced into the early American curriculum. Our kids are citizens of the world. It's a fantastic thing to be able to communicate in many places in the world. It's also fun!

I will agree with the utility of learning more languages and the vital import of children learning them. But not for some vague reason like we're all global citizens but because language skills are vitally important. Spanish- as the 2nd most spoken language in the USA and the world French -for historians as it was the language of international diplomacy in europe for much of the 17th-19th centuries German Japanese and chinese- for the 2nd 3rd and 4th biggest economy in the world, making them vital business skills. All those languages should be offered in schools in the USA.

@@sodonewithit.literally language education is incredibly easy in high school so it’s probably just for a lack of effort that you struggled. In addition, learning a foreign language builds intelligence, grammatical knowledge, vocabulary, etc, even in the native language. It absolutely should be mandatory for at least 4 semesters.

@@jacobdaniels3246 yeah no English was incredibly easy, however my very own mother tongue (Filipino) was troublesome as fuck. I'm not even Tagalog yet I had to study for soooo long just to learn how to "properly" speak Tagalog. Although I had passing grades, it was still so hard to get them. Filipino is like English but on steroids and 3x more confusing
