The other day I went into a bunch of typical American Chinese takeout restaurants as an ordinary but kinda clueless white guy and ordered food in fluent Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, and Fuzhounese). Most American Chinese takeout restaurants like this are run by people from China’s Fujian province, so it was fun for them to hear me speak their native but fairly rare language of Fuzhounese!
It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions - both the waiters and the other patrons in these NYC Chinatown restaurants were totally shocked! Thanks everyone for supporting me on my language learning journey!!!

I know how to say a few words like thanks you, you're welcome, good morning, etc. And they start laughing and give me a thumbs up all the time, but my goal is to learn how to have at least a small conversation. I could teach you Serbian if you want lol not a frequently used language but I guarantee that it's very unique. We read as we write there's no special way of saying it like in other languages like there's no combinations of ch or similar we make up for it with just one letter and we also wrote the same way we say it. I remember reading that it's one of the most complicated languages since 90% languages is letter combinations. I don't know about Asian languages though but I think they have letter combinations as well. The language has 2 different dialects one is called latin(latinica) and other chirilic(ćirilica), latin dialect is the same as normal English dialect just without w, x, y and q but it has some other ones like č, ć, đ, ž while chirilic is similar to Russian dialect (љ, њ, р, т, з, у, и, о, п, ш, д, ф, г, к, л, ч, ћ, џ, ц, в, б, н, м, ђ, ж)that's the basics though

It's actually quite sad. I see it in all of his videos. The people are so judgmental and want NOTHING to do with him. And then he speaks their language and they treat him well. It goes to show that most of these people don't give a fuck about the people who live in America, especially those who were born there. They don't attempt to assimilate and learn the language (English) and they give us trouble for it. Yet this guy shows them that with practice and a willingness to learn anyone can learn any language. But rather than take a life lesson out of it, they laugh and giggle for a bit. As soon as he leaves that room they go back to their old ways and continue to talk shit about everyone around them in their mother tongue. Why do we glorify these situations? He made a Chinese person, who looks like they hate everyone around them, smile and somehow this is considered amazing. He is non-intentionally exposing all of these people for how nasty minded they are. I expect that if I went to China I would learn the language, be nice to people and treat everyone properly. Instead they do the opposite.
@neilmod
@neilmod 3 жыл бұрын
@@marchfifth1754 Perhaps you may view it like that and I see your point. However, from my point, it's the other way round, minorities especially Asians often try to blend in to Western culture to fit. Especially younger generations because they will ostracized of they don't. How else so Asians have western names? It's so white ppl can say their names and remember it lol. The British heavily established that during their colonialism as they complete stripped any non British within their society of their ethnic identity. I could also point out how Asians are badly treated in America from Japanese concentration camps in 2nd world war to beating them up due to the pandemic. Therefore, from I see it, I don't see it as a surprise if they are just as prejudiced if they don't get with equal respect. But of course, I've seen how Chinese tourists and businesses behave in other countries in the media and it wasn't great. So I don't completely disagree with just that respect comes both ways and it's clear to them that this dude goes forward to meet them halfway which not a lot of westerners do (just expect to speak fluent English and understand them regardless of any country they are at 🙄)

When learning a new language your personality is like totally different in the language because you’re restricted by your knowledge, even if you’re pretty much fluent. There’s just so much to learn that it can be difficult to try to really be yourself in your second, third, or fourth language. When someone starts speaking to you in your native language, especially someone you didn’t expect to speak it (especially very well), it’s easier to open up and it’s also just like, exciting to meet someone else who’s taken the time to learn your language.

FiendishGhoul It would be more surprising since a lot of Asian people (especially older Asians) are surprised by black people in general (from what I’ve seen). I’m not Asian but I think it has to do with the fact that not a lot of black people travel to regions dominated by Asians when compared to white people and black and Asian interactions were even rarer in older times (1450-1900 I’d say).

@@johnc3403 It’s mostly a Parisian thing in my experience. They are known for being a bit snob and “hautain” (I dunno how to translate it, something like thinking you always have the high ground) about their impeccable dialect. Mareseillais or south France, also the ones near portugal border (patois?), are usually more nicer when it comes to that since their dialect get mocked too by uppity Parisians. As for Quebec, the largest speaking French place in North America (makes up 1/3rd of Canada really)… it depends. In Montreal people are very nice usually, specially in mixed neighbourhoods like Le Plateau and Little Italy. In the rural parts or more to the north, if you speak with the québécois accent you will be easily interesting to the locals like in this video, very family-like like in this video. In touristy part of big cities people will be unfazed usually, simply because it is so common to have french speaking tourists from everywhere around Europe drop by.
