Xiaomi (MI) WiFi Repeater/Amplifier Setup w/ Other Routers

Video guide to setup/configure Xiaomi's WiFi Repeater/Amplifier to extend the network of a WiFi router not made by Xiaomi. I'm using it to connect to my Asus router.
Download Mi Home app (Play Store version and has a different interface now) - tchms.to/MiHome
I purchased the repeater from AliExpress - tchms.to/1ZU1CwB
Restrictions: You cannot set a custom password for the network created by the repeater (and you can actually make changes to none of the settings). The app sets the same password as used on your router.
The device is branded as WiFi+. If you instead want to set it up with a Xiaomi Mi Router, you just need to plug the stick into the USB port at the back of the Mi Router and wait for the LED to turn blue.

Got it to work after couple of days due to the android version i was running the app on. Switched from MM to KK and now the app kinda works :) But i must say the repeater is slow as shit and get likle 2Mb a sec while i get like 35+ on my normal wifi. Edit: Solved the slow wifi speed by putting my router in 20mhz instead of auto (20/40mhz) and putting the channel from 3 to 1 or 11.

Hi All, I am posting this because I am using the Xiaomi WiFi repeater/adapter and it works great NOW!! The set up can be confusing, I used my iPhone in the end and downloaded the Mi Home app from the App Store. Ok, Make sure your home wifi network is up and running and connected to internet, very important to check as it will throw red herrings in later if not. Go to the IOS app store and download Mi Home By Xiaomi, From here you need to login or create a login and password to continue. Plug your new MiWiFi repeater in to a USB port, either on PC/laptop/router/games console or wall charging plug. keep everything in the same room for now for ease of setup you can move things once set up. Hopefully the repeater is now flashing with an orangey/yellow light, start up your MiHome app on your IOS device and log in. Now this part might take a few attempts, but it does work in the end. once the App is up and running in the bottom of the screen click My Devices. A screen with all devices should come up with a big EMPTY ! sign. no problems here comes the set up. You will probably need a pin or a needle for resetting the repeater.Now is a good time to get one. There should be a + sign in the top right corner, Press it. Now this might work straight away or it might not ( it didn't for me). Hopefully you now have a big list of devices to choose from in all devices, scroll down the page and find MI Wi-Fi amplifier. Check that the repeater is still flashing yellowy/orange, click yellow light blinking towards the lower part of the screen and click next. Not sure if it helps but make sure your IOS device is connected to your network and not the repeater yet. It now asks for your network Wi-Fi password, Type it in and press next. Now go to settings on your IOS device and select the MiWiFi repeater and connect, hopefully when you go back to the MI Home APP the connection has already started and the % is rising steady. This is where you get lucky or not. If when the progress gets to 100% the light has changed from flashy yellow/orange to blue your there. But if not you will have to reset the repeater (with the pin or needle) and start the process again. I Have had the flashy yellow/ orange light many times and even a steady red( which i haven't seen anyone talk of before. either way its a reset and start again. some times it take time for the repeater to reset and be seen by your IOS device. Take your time and retry,it will work eventually. Once your light turns blue your in. You can now move it to the dead spot in your house and login. Your repeater will now be the same name as your home Network, except it will have the word "PLUS" after it and you can connect with your home networks password/pin or key. Hopefully this helps, if it doesn't work keep hitting the reset and restart the IOS app as well. Think this might work the same for android but not sure.

Is that a repeater? Searching the latter term presents me with Mi USB WiFi Adapter which is an Adapter for receiving WiFi networks. It will not require any special configuration AFAIK. Edit: Sorry, I got confused. Upon looking properly, it is a different device. This guide will not apply to that one and you will need the PC client for the same to work :)

The software is only needed to tell the repeater which SSID to connect to. After that it works just like a normal WiFi network. No client side software needed.

+hj chua Hi. The performance is satisfactory to me as I'm only using it to extend range so as I can browse internet on the roof. Not much of downloading as such. I did a quick speed test and you can find the video here - tchms.to/21jjy4v Hope this helps :) I don't think it can be a replacement for some highly priced high performance routers, but does work acceptably well for the price it is targeted at. Also, I don't have a high speed connection where the results may probably differ.

Just for the setup, Rizky. You can delete the app, but you might want to keep it in case the device is to be reset to connect to a different network :)

for those who are having the "time out connection" problem: enter your router (from browser digit 192.168.1.1 or something similar) and set "wpa2" for the password and set 20mhz (not the 20/40 option). turn on bluetooth and wifi on the phone and connnect to your router establishing a working connection to the internet. then open "mi app" (provided that you have downloaded it from the play store; if i am not wrong it will ask you to register a "mi account") , add manually the device choosing it form the list (it is the second on the right between the 2 repeater you will find in the list) follow on screen instructions blu light will show up

I'm sorry ROBI, but I can't help you much here as I have never tried this personally. It will depend on how the app connects to the YI camera. If it is just the SSID, you can set repeater to use the same SSID, but if MAC address is also used, there is no way to spoof it so far. You'll just have to play with it to figure out if it can work for you.

No buddy, it doesn't work as a WiFi adapter for your PC. It is simply a repeater and only takes power via USB. It provides no communication over USB.

Just because I only needed it for a week :p Used it when I was at a relative's place and his WiFi was not strong enough. It works fine. Heats a bit and then stays at that heat level for any period of time you use it for. If you use a normal power USB port, something close to 0.8A - 1A, then it will continue to work fine. I guess it will have problems if you give it more power like 2A.

It will depend on your mobile device. With both the connections remembered, most devices will switch to the more stronger network whenever they are available. But some decide to stick to the same unless the network is not available. So, depends on your device.

Been using the always for over 2 weeks now. Be sure that you do not plug it to an adapter with a high output. Mine is a 1A adapter and it works good. No overheat.

Going really far would bring the repeater too far away from the access point that it won't be able to connect anymore. Leaving it midway might help in having the range extended a bit further, but leaving it mid-way wouldn't be possible. You should rather subscribe to a data pack on your mobile and create a hotspot.

I managed to set up the repeater to connect and amplify the Wi-Fi, but I get an error when I try to login to the HotSpot I need to use with the Wi-Fi (landlord's rules, nothing I can do about it). The error is "web browser did not send challenge response (try again, enable JavaScript)". For some reason it occasionally works for a few seconds. From what I read online, I need to change the setting in the repeater to https login instead of http-chap or http-pap, but how on earth do I do that? I can't see the repeater in the app.

I had issues with another repeater when trying to repeat hotspot..TP Link repeater...apparently hotspots will not have static IPs and for repeating , repeaters need static IP...not sure if thats the issue or not, but I have given up after trying multiple times ...for few minutes it used to work and then drop the connection

The Mi Mini WiFi USB Router might serve your purpose. Do note that the setup utility is in Chinese and you might have a hard time setting it up. I'll try ordering one and figuring out how to set it up as a WiFi adapter :)

You mean using this as a WiFi adapter for the desktop? No that won't happen. This is only a repeater and has no USB WiFi Adapter. You'll need a WiFI adapter connected to your desktop which would catch the network extended by the repeater and connect to it.

i have the solution. Change the server and try the others servers for example i have a account from xiaomi healt and it didnt work at first soo i changed to singapore server and it works. good luck!

Ideally where your network gets low and other devices have problems connecting. The repeater has a stronger antenna than your phone and hence it will still be able to catch a good amount of signal.

+TechMesto I have solve the problem. This apps working on android 5 or below. In my android 5.5 (s6) the apps simply don't want to login, I logged it in via samsung e7, and it succeeded. thankyou

Christian Farahmand I hope you're not trying to use it as an Internet adapter because it isn't that. It is only a wireless repeater.

TechMesto nope im not. I have it connected to my router. and my.phone can access the intenet on the extender. but not my.pc.

Christian Farahmand That's strange. So you've connected your PC to the WiFi network created by the repeater, but there's no Internet? Do you see the yellow exclamation mark on the Network icon in the status bar?

TechMesto the light on the extender is blue. However on my app on the the phone. my computer shows up under its alias in this case "ghost" however 2 orange symbols accompany it and no active connection is present. but it says it's connected.. very confusing indeed
