I agree with you on every point you made. I just refurbished my 1994 Kenmore. Some pieces can be very, very stubborn to take off. Like the wash basket. My motor coupler was the original plastic one and came right off. I enjoy your videos , humor, and point of view.

@@xjoe81x I hope you didn't discard the motor. If you can identify where the flat was then you can weld a bead there and grind and file a new flat.

Oh goody, I get a gold star! I have never seen this happen before, but I can see how it could happen. Still, even though the motor coupler has been reinforced with metal, that metal piece should have sheared, not destroy the motor shaft. But this is the kind of thing you can run into out in the field. This video clearly demonstrates the real-life struggles involved in replacing this motor coupler, instead of them going to a commercial break on TV and coming back with the engine and transmission already replaced. This is something you don't see in the repair videos where everything is otherwise perfect under ideal conditions. It's a shame if failed this way, but considering this was left behind by the previous owners, chances are when they'd do laundry, they'd put the machine on, go upstairs, and pay no mind to it, no matter what weird sounds or banging noises it was making. This machine was clearly "rode hard and put away wet". Fortunately, my estimates for the cost of a new motor were way too high, a replacement Chinese motor can be had from between $120 and $150. Well, well worth the cost of repair if someone needed to buy a motor outright.

I mean, at least I watched the whole video. I remember the first video I've watched on Jay's channel back when you and him were cleaning the Kenmore Washer in 2014 I think it was. I should get a gold star too.
@miketurner461011 ай бұрын
Yep, that is the problem. Thank you for the video. The flat sides on the shaft on the electric motor are rounded as well as the metal insert of the plastic coupling on that side. The holes in the black rubber part of the coupling are oggled out as well. The transmisson shaft is good though.

I just got a 90s Roper Direct Drive for $175 off marketplace to finally replace my newer Kenmore belt drive that can't balance out a load for shit anymore and let alone clean as good as the direct drive, guy sold it because the motor coupler broke and he ordered one from whirlpool themselves never showed up so he got a Kenmore dd from the local appliance shop and they also fixed the coupler for the roper then finally the one from whirlpool showed up so i got a spare coupler with it, only problem I've noticed is it does slip into spin instead of neutral draining but other than that it works perfectly fine. i probably will do a neutral drain kit in the future but it should be fine for now I'd say the only things i did do to the washer is run a affresh cleaning tablet in it and change out the drain hose only because the one that came with the washer doesn't fit well into the standpipe of the houses old plumbing

I also have a video of doing a neutral drain kit...

@@xjoe81xafter 5 hours of mcfuckery and bullshit i just finished changing the neutral drain kit and the spin clutch and i gotta say it's quieter spins up to speed quicker, stops on a dime and neutral drains now i used the same gasket maker you used and i got the clutch from Lorain furniture and appliance a upgraded 6 pad commercial clutch, it's amazing how simple and easy these old direct drives are to work on and yet people still throw them out for he junk that doesn't do shit but makes noise and shreds clothes

My washer will sometimes engage in agitate and spin cycles, but if I do two washes in a row, it won't do either until the motor cools down. Is this also a coupler issue? Or is it the clutch? Other than trying one and / or the other, how would I go about diagnosing it without taking the transmission / motor out?

Very good question. I don't have that answer.

Put new coupler on, tested it and it barely spins and comes to a complete stop but motor is still going. What could be the issue? Appreciate it 👍
