Though I have little to back my belief, I think Anub'Arak was intentionally written and voiced this way. He is, in fact, caring. His quotes like this one or "Hurry, death knight... hurry", and their delivery, really convey the feeling that Anub'Arak is actually a good guy, just made to serve the wrong side. And it's actually fairly confirmed in the books. In Road to Damnation, he had an exchange with Kel'Thuzad who told him that Anub'Arak agreed to serve the Lich King in exchange for immortality in undeath. Anub'Arak merely replied: "Agreed implies choice." He is not evil, he is fully aware of what he is, what he does and why. It's just that he is so strongly compelled by the Lich King to behave that way that he can't escape the King's influence. I really enjoyed this nuance of his character and the insight he gives into how the undead work - they're not controlled per se, they're just motivated so strongly that no simply isn't an answer. Not sure about how exactly they're motivated, but the undead sort of have free will. They're free to do whatever they want as long as it works for the Lich King.

Nerzhul betrayed Kiljaeden because after Legion's victory he would outlive his usefulness. Oh and Kiljaeden tore his body apart and tortured his naked soul, essentially forcing Nerzhul to become Lich King.

The FT storyline was always a bit more interesting than the base WC3 game. It was an interesting concept to have Arthas start out at his highest level (like you worked toward in the WC3 Scourge campaign) and then slowly lose levels as the Lich King grew weaker. It really provided a challenge.

They managed to implement so many nuanced politics. Like, Illidan is not a bad guy, but he is bound to work for Kil’Jaden, a new big bad. Keltas and Vasj are not bad guys either, they just follow their best interests, but through connection to their master they are linked to his master too. And you still root for them, despite them not being typical “good guys”. Hell even Arthas and Anub’Arak make you cheer for them because of how cool their interactions are.

If Warcraft 3 gets a remaster I'd love for them to make the In Game Cinematic more animated, with the models gesturing and the mouths moving in sync with the voices. It wouldn't be out of the question with today's tech.

What would happen if Nerzhul got destroyed i wonder. Arthas would have been free of his control and turn good again for sure but would he still be able to wield Frostmourne's power ? Or would Frostmourne just turn into a piece of metal ?

Hard to say. Balnazzar said that Frostmourne had powerful enchantments but Arthas's own powers will fade in time. It would seem that Frostmourne does have some powers separate from the Frozen Throne, since even with most of his powers drained Arthas was still loyal to Lich King completely, still it is mainly a tool by which Lich King communes with Arthas and empowers him. What would happen to Arthas with blade stayed intact and Frozen Throne destroyed is hard to guess. Either Arthas would regain his mind once Lich King dies or Frostmourne would remain as it is and keep all souls it had stolen along with Arthas's but Arthas would lose most of his undeathly powers and become an over glorified warrior not too different from how he used to be as a paladin minus backing of the Light. Still if Arthas ever regained his mind in such situation, he very likely wouldn't live long. By that i mean he probably wouldn't want to live with the guilt of all the atrocities he committed as it was his lack of soul thanks to Frostmourne that made him feel no remorse.

Zero60133 Very detailed answer :) As you said probably enchantments of Frostmourne gives blade powers that are independent from the frozen throne like stealing souls but with no lich king to commune via the blade, Arthas would just be a soulless human knight without his unholy powers. So he wouldn’t turn good after all. He’d be just lonely traitor prince with little to no power and no undead army at his side. “Whomever picks up the blade shall wield power eternal. Just as the blade rends flesh, the power scars the spirit.” It seems like Frostmourne is just a curse with no rewards without the frozen throne.

Frostmourne wasn't meant to save anything or anyone but the Lich King. Had Illidan succeeded in destroying the Frozen Throne before Arthas could reach it there's only few outcomes available for him. Either he would regain his mind and be horrified with all things he did and then probably end his own life or allow Kael'thas and his blood elves(whose second biggest priority after destroying the Frozen Throne would be his death) along with Illidan and his Naga to kill him once they find him. Or he'd stay evil thanks to Frostmourne powers but largely powerless otherwise, and still having to deal with all the other invaders scouring Northrend in search of him and they would eventually find him. So in both cases he'd probably get hunted down and killed. There's also a chance that Anub'Arak and rest of Scourge that was still under Lich King control would go rogue and turn against each other and Arthas. Either way unless destroying Frozen Throne turns off Frostmourne soul stealing and soul keeping powers, Arthas's soul and soul of hundreds or thousands of people he killed would stay trapped in the sword forever while blade the remains lost in frozen north or in Illidan's keeping. Since there's also Yogg-Saron and Lich King theories, Yogg-Saron calling himself god of death and both him and Terenas soul saying "no king rules forever". Some weird stuff could happen and Arthas might start hearing Yogg-Saron's voice. Which could turn Arthas in some sort of herald/champion of Yogg-Saron and other Old Gods. There's already lot of theories that Bolvar might herald Yogg-Saron and Void coming to Azeroth, with all saronite(Yogg-Saron's hardened blood) incorporated in Ice Crown architecture and that fact that Yogg-Saron's influence is known to drive mindless undead insane or influence them in some other means.

I feel like the undead would've just turned feral (although I'm sure the ones raised by other necromancers would've remained in their control), arthas would've either killed himself or do an ebon blade thing and fight the legion, but frostmourne would've retained its power but lost its connection to nerzhul as it is still a runeblade forged by the nathrezim. Anubarak and any other undead with minds of their own who served unwilling might follow arthas should he choose redemption or do what the forsaken did and try to return home.

The undead would likely turn feral and destroy the world. In WOW it was revealed that without the Lich King, the undead would run rampart until everyone is dead. That was why Bolvar had to take up the mantle as the new Lich King. Arthas would likely lose almost all his powers and likely be hunted down and killed. I don't think he would regain his humanity just because he's no longer under service from the Lich King. Just look at Sylvanas, even after she broke free from the control and regained their free will, they're still doing extremely horrifying acts of evils even after defeating Arthas which was their primary goal. And they do so without any hint of remorse. At best, Arthas if he survived would try to find some way to build up his power once more or die trying.

Its ok to build a villain and make them intereststing and its ok to bring them down with their sins, but do it the right way. Its also ok to make a villain tragic (in fact, you should make every villain tragic), but its not ok to make them mindcontrolled. For someone to be a villain, they need to commit evil by their own choice. Its ok for it to be forced by tragic circumstances, but the influece needs to be rejectable, not a 100% mind control.
