I just don't understand why do they change the source material so much. If they just stick to the material and made little changes that are requied for adaption, it would have been so much better, so more money for them.
@nikeaddict55
@nikeaddict55 Жыл бұрын
@@lift12716 I think there were some things that needed to be changed. 1) Way too many people are sexually interested in a child (granted they haven't reached those parts yet). There's ways to show people wanting to use Ciri's power that doesn't include them wanting to have sex with her 2) Women (particularly the sorceresses) are talked about in a way that hinges on the border of misogyny and focuses way too much about their attractiveness rather than their abilities. It really feels like Sap has a power fetish and brought that into his books a little too much Now, the whole monolith thing made no sense and that was just a big fail, as was whatever they were trying to do in Kaer Morhen. For whatever reason they got really ambitious in S2 and it showed how inexperienced the writers were, and now they have to deal with that

- The Scoia'tael weren't after Ciri until Thanedd massacre. - Ciri is NOT a killer at this point, and this should be very important, her first human kill is quite a traumatic event in the books. - Jaskier did not get romantically involved with Radovid (Since at this point he is 10 years old in the books). - The short interaction between Ciri and Mistle did not happen in Gors Velen (Tho the rest of Gors Velen did happen). - Geralt did not see, let alone fight the Wild Hunt chasing Ciri after she ran from Gors Velen. - The Belleteyn scene did not happen at all. - The sea monster fight did not happen like this at all, it was Geralt that was on that boat, while being chased by corrupt/fake soldiers that wanted to arrest him. - Ciri's witcher training at this point did not involve killing monsters, she would practice her movements etc whenever she could. - Ciri does not want to be a princess. - Ciri is NOT the Avatar that can unite people because shes part elf part human, she knows that and never even says that in books. - Obviously Yennefer never lost her powers and never got close to giving Ciri to Nilfgaard, so that whole tension is not in the books. - Ciri can't stand Yennefer at first, and it's likewise. - The Scoia'tael attack did happen and indeed on a convoy Geralt and Ciri were in, but Yennefer wasn't there, instead it was Triss who was sick on their way from Kaer Morhen to Temple of Melitele (where Ciri would go and eventually be trained by Yennefer while Geralt goes after Rience, Ciri would escape from Yennefer after hearing about Aretuza and being treated like a servant by Yennefer's friends, where she would be chased by the Wild Hunt but eventually find Geralt because she knew where about he was at, Yen finds her and reunites with Geralt for the first time in a long time). - NO ONE knows at this point that Emhyr is Ciri's father - Fringilla did not get imprisoned - Vilgefortz and Tisseia were not a couple - Vilgefortz's "team" did brainwash a girl that looked like Ciri and sent her to Emhyr after Thanedd, tho this was a random girl that they kidnapped - Geralt hears about the Ciri clone after Thanedd at Brokilon, where they were already separated (Tho he does not hear that it's a clone, he hears that Ciri is allegedly in Nilfgaard, about to marry the emperor). - Ciri does NOT hear anything about the clone until a friend of the Rats tells to the group that the princess of Cintra is going to marry Emhyr. - Yennefer also didn't set Cahir free, since he was never captured by the north, so she doesn't have to beg anyone's forgiveness - The whole Stregebor suspicion does not happen in the books. - Yennefer HATES Triss (because she had slept with Geralt, allegedly using magic in a weak moment, while being "friends" with Yennefer). - There are NO monoliths, there are NO books on how to travel through space and time, the only ones capable of that are the Wild Hunt generals, and Ciri. - Istredd is not an important character in the books, he's barely even mentioned. - As for appearances, few of the characters look as they're supposed to, especially the mages, Margaritta looks like she's had too many margarittas, and whatever else was on the menu. I most likely forgot some more differences, been a few months since I read the books, but these are the ones the immediately came to mind while watching. They took events that happened in the book, but changed them almost entirely, people are there who shouldn't be, and some are in the completely wrong timeline.

I made it to episode 3 and quit. Got that same sinking feeling I got for GoT, Last Jedi, RoP and TWD post S4ish. The plot starts to scatter and feel weightless, and the dialogue starts to remind me of a 90s soap (specifically the scene where Jen starts to neurotically lecture Ciri like an incompetent parent that doesn't understand how interpersonal dynamics work between human beings). You don't get to shortcut mentorship by explaining the rulebook of life to a young person as if they'll all of a sudden go "aha!"- it does not work and has never worked in the history of time, and makes the "mentor" seem naive and stupid for even trying it. If it were that simple society would be a Utopia because we'd all do it.

@@MODAFINILYTabsolutely not- the original dear friend letter is a wonderful example of Yennefer’s snarky and witty attitude- not to mention her character as a whole.And it shows Geralt’s hilarious and awkward attempt to reconnect with Yennefer- they had a serious off and in relationship and he begins the letter with “dear friend”, and then Yennefer goes on to seemingly politely but epically embarrass him through a letter. You can feel her anger even without her telling him off word for word. It’s genius writing. The show destroyed its importance and impact.

The joke in the book is suppose to show geralt doesn't know what yennefer is to him so he uses dear friend, but yennefer uses it sarcastically to show that whatever they are, they aren't friends. Its really well done in the books to capture the idea that while geralt struggles with his beliefs, yennefer 8s someone who knows what she wants and is patient and strong-willed enough to get him. If I were to adapt it, the most important thing to capture is yennefer wit and self confidence and geralts confusion at being wooed by a woman. The show used it as exposition and missed out on a very important romance beat in their relationship. It's the difference between a good love story and fifty shades of grey

I think the note exchanging part is kinda cringe, not cute. Lol. For those who don't know, it's referencing the part where Geralt needed Yen's help regarding Ciri's training so he wrote to her from Kaer Morhen, but their relationship was complicated that time so he just decided to start with "Dear friend". Yen got pissed about it so she replied with a long condescending letter repeatedly calling him "dear friend" that's basically saying something like "Of course I will help you. I'm your 'dear friend' after all." Seems like another thing from the books that they took just to show they're following the books more closely but failed because it's an entirely different context.

We don't know that much about Vizimir, but from what little we do know he seemed to be a fair and pretty good ruler. He led the northern armies at Sodden, and during The Last Wish's striga story, there were apparently talks of people considering Vizimir as a better ruler of Temeria, and he was pretty calm and composed in the Hagge Castle meeting as well.

I can see their line of thinking how "if she's regarded as goddess, let's make her something nobody expects" like, really? If this was the beauty standard to strive for in this universe, wouldn't all sorceresses modify themselves to be fat? Or is fatness so rare, nobody could have imagined such a form? That's equally ridiculous because over the centuries such bias would still have led to big asses and shoulders as sorceresses are trying to perfect their physical form. It's such a shallow take it speaks badly of production.

What I find really funny is that they made the whole second season the way they did it to avoid the "boring part" of the books (well, the whole elf blood actually), only to find out that they don't really have anything to use and have to establish the relationships and the world now. We just had an extremely long, bad and boring filler instead of the whole season. Literally, if they'd rather start the second season by inviting Yen to Kaer Morhen instead of Triss, then spend an episode, maybe two in the castle (while the second line would maybe focus on politics through Triss and introduce the witches a bit), then move on to the plot" Time of Contempt" and ended it on Thanedd, we'd actually be where we are now. Otherwise I agree: the third is definitely an improvement. I'm especially glad to finally see some work with the main trio there (The letters and Yenn's infiltration of the house, due to the lack of wine, were quite nice). Since the books were written to make us feel that something is wrong when the three aren't together - it's nice to get some relationships so soon - it only took two seasons. I'm not even commenting on the fact that Ciri and Yennefer are someone completely different, I'm just happy that they're next to each other and talking to each other. Also, when we got to the part with the plot, they doesn't have to invent so much and there are therefore fewer logical problems. Unfortunately, everything else important is pretty much the same. The basic misunderstanding of the original in its most important aspect is beautifully seen through that banquet. The episode itself was probably not the worst, but Lauren again preferred a cheap "mystery and detective plot" to one of the best dialogues between Geralt and Vilgefortz - in addition, the conversation turns to Yen again, because she obviously has gravity of a black hole. Netflix is making a story that was supposed to be about characters mostly about plot and action. While Sapkowski scorned fate, prophecy, and predestination, Netflix relies on it etc.

It's really stupid, if they thought Blood of Elves was too boring, they should've combined Blood of Elves with parts of Time of Contempt. A rough outline I think might work is like this, Episodes 1: Triss arriving at Kaer Morhen up to the vision with Ciri. Episode 2: At Kaer Morhen, Ciri's training, and ending with the argument between everyone about staying neutral and whatnot. Episode 3: On the road in Kaedwen, setting up the Scoia'tail's conflict with the humans. Episode 4: Travelling with the dwarves and with the whole Shaerrawaedd thing and the Scoia'tail ambush. Episode 5: Cutting between the Northern Kings' meeting at Hagge Castle, introducing Emhyr, and Ciri meeting Yennefer. Episode 6: Ciri's training with Yennefer and Geralt's river cruise. Episode 7: The beginning of Time of Contempt up to the messenger's death and Geralt meeting with Codringer and Fenn. Episode 8: Yennefer and Ciri arriving at Gors Velen, up to Yennefer and Geralt's reunion. Episode 9: The party at Thanedd, ending with Geralt meeting Vilgefortz and we see some preparations for the Thanedd coup and the Northern Kingdoms' strike at Dol Angra. Episode 10: Finale. Civil War on Thanedd between the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, Geralt almost dies fighting Vilgefortz, the skirmish at Dol Angra. The Second Nilfgaardian War begins and we get a closing shot of Triss and Geralt teleporting to Brokilon. That's clearly enough action and drama for a full season and ends on a banger perfect for a show's finale.

Your review is excellent and I couldn't agree more with it. And it will continue because they've already changed too much. I do love all the bonding moments in season 3 and there's definitely some good moments from the books as well. This season is better than the last, but I'm too afraid of what they'll do with other beloved characters like Regis in the future (considering how they butchered Eskel). "Oh yeah you know that book and game series everyone loves that have a direct story time-line from books to games? yeah well how about we buy the name, use the same character names, but just make our own, _better_ story, with tons of gay scenes, women empowerment, social justice allegory, and essentially a completely different story!! What? Why not just make our own show? Well because no one would watch it..."

I was disappointed in the first minute, because I really like the scene with Geralt and the Professor's goons. "You have a choice, one of you will come out and tell me who hired you. Then you may ride away without any trouble. Or all three of you may come out. I'm waiting." I love that line and it sucks the show doesn't have Geralt speak at all. Also, I think the show writers thought the Professor was an actual professor because he's not carrying a weapon, his goons tell him to stand back, and he begs for his life instead of fighting, even though in the book he's a bandit who is called the Professor because he uses big words, which they got that at least, in the 2 lines he had. I also miss the interaction between Geralt and Vilgefortz at Thanedd, they sort of had it, but really cut down. Vilgefortz telling Geralt about his background and all the different paintings was interesting. The whole Thanedd episode could have been better, I feel like I would have preferred if they stuck to one character's POV for each repeat, like just Geralt's view of the party, just Yennefer, etc, instead of jumping around and retreading old scenes again and again. The song verse "not everything is as it seems" that played everytime was a bit on the nose.

I just can't with the casting. My brain has to do gymnastics to keep up with the scenes because the characters are so far off from what they should be it's difficult to match the words with the mouth delivering the lines. Fat sorceress' and Radovid salivating over Dandelion was really taking me out of the story.

oof...i cant say i agree at all...she is supposed to closely resemble yennifer for that whole geralt romance thing to make any sense (though i suspect netflix will cut that out entirely - cheating even though its during a break up is bad) but i think the actress gets a bad rap for shitty writing thats out of her control....hell even her being black is a writing/showrunning decision and if the rest of the writing wasnt so terrible i think she couldve pulled it off

I just really hate the fact that they’re making a lot of the characters gay and trying to integrate it into the story without it making much sense. Like how there’s a potential gay relationship between Ciri and the thief that just pops out of nowhere and doesn’t elaborate. Or Jaskier being a womanizer for YEARS and then all of a sudden becomes gay when he talks to Radovid like 3 times, and even leaves Ciri on her own for Radovid, which Jaskier would never have done for any woman. It’s just kind of annoying when writers try to push a character’s sexuality more than the actual characters story.

One of the abrupt character transformations that peeved me during season 2 was Cahir`s. He returned to his kingdom enraged and broken, hating elves who he insulted and picked on. He was also salivating to reclaim his seat of power from Fringila. Then at one point he suddenly became sympathetic towards elves, he talked down the people conspiring to take Fringila during the murder dinner before Fringila appeared. This season we learned the elf-hating Cahir has a close elf friend. Talking about 360 change.

I feel like it is better not watching this season because if you want to enjoy the Witcher, you can play the game or read the book those are better quality of the Witcher. I see no future in this Netflix show being good, Just okay. I want to enjoy a good show, not a okay show. I am having more enjoyment of the witcher just playing the game right now. I recommend other people do the same rather than watch this bad to okay show.

If anyone introduction to the Witcher is this show, I feel really bad for them as the Witcher is so much better as a book and a game than this show. The plot make more sense, and the characters are more interesting than this show portrayed any of its elements.

Biggest problem for me once again the distance and traversal. I know that most people don't care about it but there were so many times where they were showing generic city b-roll and I was aching for a title card just to show me where it is. Once again, it was super funny when Geralt basically teleported to save Ciri from the Hunt out of nowhere. This really makes the world feel kind of artificial and fake to me. It really feels like where ever the plot happens, ever person is too. Like, oh yeah Francesca and the Scoiatell are also in this one forest on an entire continent
@xLetalis

Yeah I think I mentioned it here, that in the end of last season Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri and Yarpen basically rode across the entire continent overnight
