Holy F I am actually learning more from this podcast than Deadmau5's masterclass. Joel had so much time to prepare a nice thing and actually doesn't say much in the videos, I love that Afrojack also noticed it! Afro on the other hand just casually spill so many secrets in a 1.30 min podcast. Training, fighting dirty is so logical, thank you for explaining that on Ronaldo, Jordan examples. You rock!!!

As an European it is so crazy to me that EDM in the US just started like 10 years ago. I still remember Eminem rapping "Nobody listens to Techno..." in the 2000s while the majority of the US was nodding in agreement :) Meanwhile Europe was already so much into House music of all kinds. And it also baffles me that DnB becomes a thing just now? For everyone just starting with that genre, check out Pendulum, Maduk, Andromedik, Boxplot, Method, Koven, Delta Heavy, Netsky, T & Sugah and Sub Focus among many others. UKF, Hospital Records and Liquicity are fantastic channels for all kinds of D&B.

This is so false! We were having festivals in the mid 90s in California! I've been going to parties since 94, and it was straight up huge! Afrojack saying EDC didn't start until 2010 is wild! I went to the 1st EDC in 97 at the shrine! 2nd EDC in 99 at the abandoned water park!
@SpiraResident720175 ай бұрын
@JohnnyMack619 he is right when it comes to commercial success. The US had no dance tracks in their top 100 at all, while in Europe this stuff was constantly in the top 5 and had huge airplay on the radio. I am not doubting that the US had die hard fans but it was just a tiny niche. America was all about R&B, Hip Hop, Country and Rock. Dance music was not a thing
@SpiraResident720175 ай бұрын
@@3x157 Dude, Eurodance is not Dance and I never doubted that the US had raves and such but on a commercial side the US only took notice when David Guetta released "When Love Takes over" in 2009. From then on EDM exploded. Before that the majority didn't even know what that was. Dance music originated in the US but was quickly abandonded by pretty much everyone (commercially). Frankie Knuckles and Green Velvet were absolute Icons nobody knew, cause they had no airplay or tracks in the US charts. We are talking about the same level of Success, Eminem had back then, or Linkin Park, Korn, 50 Cent or even fuckin Ashley Simspon. No techno act from the US ever achieved that. MTV barely played dance music videos in the US while Europe even had MTV2 which played all kinds of Dance music on a regular basis. You and your gang were probably big fans of the genre but the US as a whole? That didn't exist. Ask you parents or people outside of your group who Fergie is and they probably know. Do the same for Armin Van Buuren or Blank & Jones and they have no idea. The US had no stars back then and they only have a few just now. Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Major Lazer or Chainsmokers are a new phenomenon. Nothing alike existed in the 90s or 2000s. Nothing. Even "Show me Love" just clicked with US audience cause it had so many influences from Soul and R&B. Straight up Techno, Trance or DnB bangers didn't work in he charts. You have to look at the US as a whole and not only from your point of view. It's like me saying Hip Hop in Europe was just as big as in the US only because I adored that. But that's simply not true. Hip Hop in Europe never had that commercial success it had in the US. Not even close. And the UK, France and Germany had actual big scenes. Dance Music in the US was the step child nobody really wanted. It never won any Grammys, MTV awards or anything. Oh wait it did! In the 90s and 2000s the winners of best Dance Recordings were people like Madonna, Cher, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake :D. The US as a whole simply had no idea what dance music was, therefore they only awarded pop artists until like 2012. That does NOT mean that the US had no fans or scenes but it was nowhere on the same level as Europe. That just started way later.

This. I love Afrojack's honest approach. Everyone sees only the dream of creating amazing music and performing on the main stage, but no one is telling aspiring producers and artists-and I’m deliberately not saying 'young,' because I believe you can become successful even at 50-60 if you put in the work-the reality of HOW to actually achieve their dreams and what it really entails, including the sacrifices they have to make. Thank you for these podcasts. These are opening my eyes and giving me so much inspiration. I also really liked the one with Virtual Riot. 🙂

Afrojack is the reason that I listen to electronic music today. I got dragged to Sensation White in Amsterdam back in 2011 by a friend of mine who had put it on his "European bucket list". I ended up 3rd wheeling my friend and his then partner (both of whom were having multiple domestics throughout the weekend - not a great time at all). And then a couple of times during Sensation White, I debated leaving early as I wasn't really into the music. But for some weird reason felt compelled to stay till 4am which is when Afrojack was playing. This was round the time "Take Over Control" was playing on the radio. Staying till 4am for his set, was one of the best decisions I ever made. Musically it turned on this switch which has now led me to festivals all over the world. I make it a point now to watch his set as a "Thank You" for introducing me to the wonderful world of electronic music !! Keep bringing the fire!!
