So going out side in sunlight your eyes are exposed to a pretty high amount of IR I can't imagine a low powered green laser with some leakage causing issues unless you stare into the laser or a reflect into your eyes for a period of time. I mean if it was say over 100mw yeah get some protection but at the lower level doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I work with a lot of IR related stuff with satellites and I can say for a fact your more likely to damage your eyes being out in direct sunlight.

@@vincenttremblay2580 I'm far from an expert here, but one thing that nobody (at least in this thread) is talking about is how MUCH of the laser's total output power is reaching the destination in the form of IR light. The vast majority of the IR light generated by the laser is converted into green light and only a small fraction passes through, surely. To determine exactly how dangerous it is, we would need to know what the power of the residual IR light is for each of these pointers, and compare that to intensity levels known to be dangerous over a given period of time.

Survival Lasers (The company from the link you listed in the video description) has a pair of goggles that protect your eyes from these dpss lasers. They are only 60 bucks too, which is only $10-20 more than a pair that wouldn’t block unfiltered IR light. Just pick those “Eagle Pair® 190-540nm & 800-2000nm Laser Safety Goggles” even the $50 “190-540nm & 900-1700nm” pair would suffice.

Prolonged exposure to IR radiation causes a gradual but irreversible opacity of the lens. Other forms of damage to the eye from IR exposure include scotoma, which is a loss of vision due to the damage to the retina. Even low-level IR absorption can cause symptoms such as redness of the eye, swelling, or hemorrhaging
@Michael.Chapman4 жыл бұрын
IR wavelength laser emissions, pointed from any distance into an eye, are going to be very likely most hazardous. When using these green laser devices emitting around 530 nm, of the power and technology you're discussing, and pointing the beam either into the night sky for amateur astronomy purposes, or bouncing its brilliance off a painted white interior wall surface, from say 5 to 20 feet away, under such conditions how would you judge safety? That is, when the beam will always be pointed directly away from any person's eyes? Very interested in the risk assessment for that type of use of these devices. Many thanks indeed for your excellent video presentation :-)

It can take a LONG time for regulations to catch up to technology...even decades. Sometimes just ignorance, sometimes political forces at work. Also, short-range scanners like those SHOULDN'T require much power at all, and the amount of time actually on a given spot on the retina would be minute. Such SHOULD be safe for even prolonged exposure at less than 2 feet...BUT for various reasons may be unsafe (including aging of things like capacitors used in the power regulation circuitry, or damage/misalignment over time of any optical filters on the scanning assembly).

At about 05:57 - 06:01 you state the 532nm LASER pointer you are showing is "rated at 35mW", yet the label clearly rates it at < 1mW (a Class 2 == Class II LASER). I see similar disparities at other points in the video, but the image at this timestamp is very clear. @diliff2 ай бұрын
@@TheStarDreamer I'd say Chinese companies do this because they want more sales and aren't bothered by the ethics of mislabelling the lasers. They can market them as being much more powerful, but if the label says they are 'safe' then it's less likely to be banned or withdrawn from sale. Essentially they get to present the lasers to buyers as being powerful while presenting the lasers to regulators as weak and safe.
