XMonad Setup on Arch Linux. Install a Beautiful and Minimal Window Manager with a Stunning Setup. Arch Linux is minimal and highly customizable with XMonad. This will be a great place to start fresh on Linux. Arch Linux and XMonad in 2021 will be amazing! It's definitely a great place to be for Linux enthusiast and people trying to learn the deeper parts of the Linux operating system with Arch Linux. It just might be worth the extra effort of setup w/ Arch Linux and XMonad!
Arch Linux is an independent Linux distribution that comes with a minimal setup and allows you to tailor the system to your needs. That means you can install whatever window manager or desktop environment you want and mainly to start everything on Arch Linux is done through the Command Line Interface. This is what makes it so minimal because you could technically run everything from just the terminal. Without installing anything else on Arch Linux now this might make it harder to interact with Linux, but it sets you up with learning about the internals.Arch Linux focuses on supplying you with the latest development and releases in Linux.
Arch Linux also supplies a minimal system and environment for you to be able to use Linux and also so you can build around that system to tailor to your needs. Setup can be difficult and isn't really suggested to beginners. There's other distros out there like Manjaro that use Arch Linux and maybe better suited for beginners. There is no default Desktop Environment or Window Manager. It's all up for choice. This is the ultimate freedom to do what you want!

Man, XMonad is the best window manager on Linux imo, and it's such a shame that Arch has this infamous issue with Haskell packages on top on Xorg being a shitshow so I practically had to ditch Xorg altogether and switch to Wayland, and while there is waymonad, it's not nearly as feature rich as the Xorg implementation, it breaks my heart 😿

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Make sure to smash that like button for me if you haven't already. As far as using a login manager/greeter you're on the right track. You'll have to setup a session/desktop file that references the individual desktops/window managers that you have on your system. This isn't something simple that I can easily explain so you'll have to do some research on your specific greeter. Good luck!

Thank you Savvy for two great you tube walk through's. I have done the legacy install of Arch and set up xmonad. I have been using Mint for ages and love it but wanted a polar opposite and I have learnt so much. However, I was disappointed with the final result as I can't see what I am typing in terminal. I know you stated there are problems but you had a fix at the end to make xmonad work on vm. I carried on with my install because of this but can't find the fix on the video or anywhere else. Please could you help me out. Also is there a way to get back to the shell terminal and out of xmonad so I can run commands from there instead. I am thinking of using an alternative desktop environment if it doesn't work but would like to keep the base install of Arch as it took me ages to setup in the first place. Luckily, I cloned the base version as well. In summary, please could you direct me to the fix for xmonad for virtual box, how do you get out of the de and back into shell terminal and finally is there a good alternative that will work on virtual box again. Your videos are great by the way and I have sent you a paypal contribution to get the cheat list.

If you need to access a terminal that works use the tty (console) window (CTRL+ALT+f1/f2/f3) so that you can issue commands. Reboot after you make the following changes. 1. edit the xmonad.hs file - Also, in xmonad.hs make sure to change the line that starts picom (spawnOnce "picom --experimental-backends") to spawnOnce "picom" 2. replace the picom.conf file with the VM version that's located here - github.com/Axarva/dotfiles-2.0/tree/main/VM

Unfortunately, this means I can't edit or do anything. Very frustrating as it's such a nice DE that I don't want to give up on it.

Hi, so I tried this today on a VM but there I kept facing some problems the main one being "error: no override and no default tool chain set. ERROR: a failure occured in build()". This is shown after asking if I want to install Paru, which I believe is the new pacman wrapper (instead of yay). It asks me for the repository (if I'm not wrong) from which I should install - rust and rustup were the options.. after searching for quite some time all the posts I read said to go with rustup.. then after starting build() it shows me this error and aborts the whole installation... P.S: I'm new to Arch and has been only one day... 😅

Nikhil, first off welcome to Arch and have fun learning!! =) This Xmonad config doesn't have great support for VMs. The newer version of the config which is in dev will however. To get the best results you will need to install on a physical machine. Also paru is like yay but it's developed with the rust programming language. That's why you see mention of rust & rustup (language & upgrader). I don't use paru so I can't help you there, but it might not make sense to even attempt this on a physical machine and follow the script.

It might be possible to install XMonad with these dotfiles but it won't be as simple or minimal as doing it with a base Arch Linux install. Honestly, you don't want any desktop environment installed if that's an option with Manjaro.. which I don't think is.

That's because the config is setup to use/launch allacritty. You'll have to find where it's being launched from and change it so that it launches your new terminal. Or reinstall alacritty through console/tty

Not that simple. I would install Xmonad with the config first and then add any tools you need from KDE’s desktop

Tried installing this today, but having some issues, its recommending installing paru instead of yay so I did, everything is fine then when it gets to installing some packages it asks to review these changes, if I choose either no or yes, the script doesnt do anything else, I just get thrown back to my terminal.

You might want to uninstall/remove all kde plasmas related packages before applying the XMONAD WM. Otherwise setups could cross and mess things up. I'd backup all data before attempting.

It installed fine for me (didn't ask me if I wanted zsh though and since I didn't I was OK with that). It looks very nice and works well. My only question is how do I quit? Opening the sidebar and clicking the power icon gets me a prompt asking if I am sure. It doesn't matter if I answer 'y', or 'yes', or just hit Enter; it will not exit. If I do super + shift + q (or whatever key binding was) I get a row of icons. If I click the power icon here it does absolutely nothing. Repeated clicks gets me a list telling me what my valid options are but I never saw any place to enter them. I run into similar problems trying to log out. I eventually had to launch a terminal and do "sudo shutdown now". Other than that it's great.

I think you found a bug... I normally launch a terminal and do sudo shutdown now / reboot. I didn't try from the rofi menu. I reproduced the same issue. Glad you got things installed properly and it really is a great Desktop setup!

So i followed along, same scenario was never prompted about zsh. Still created some of the files you mentions such as .zprofile & .xinitrc, although in latest version of the repo looks like powermenu.sh has those systemctl changes already made along with doas as i did not have to change any of those but I still have no xmonad. I am confused lol. Last night when I installed it i was SSHd into the machine but i just followed the steps again on the machine with a monitor and still unable to get xmonad up. for graphics I have xf86-intel-video, and as far I can tell I did not receive any error messages. xmonad recompiles without any issues but idk how to get it running or if its even setup right. although i followed the instructions as basically to the T so I am not sure.

I got this to run "sort of" on Vmware Workstation. But, I couldn't get my display to 1920x1080 and I selected it when prompted. I already installed the guest additions command line when installing arch. Maybe I forgot another Vmware util for the display? When the Xmonad script was installing, it gave me a ton of errors. On VB it just booted to the desktop but the screen was dormant. I couldn't even get a terminal going. I know Xmonad can be installed using pacman -S xmonad xmonad-contrib Then just alter the config files. I wonder if there would be any way to get this theme to work after installing XMonad manually?

Second, in the dotfiles in the github, the sidebar is shown to be going from top to bottom edge of screen. but mine stops halfway. could u help me? Glad you got things installed. Have you looked up the syntax for yay? I don't know what sudo snap install does.. that's not a command I'm familiar with. If you want to use yay it goes something like this yay -S package_name. Also use tint2conf to edit menu sizes.

I think it might have something to do with not installing the compositor on Arch; picom. When I say, "I got it to work" I don't mean using the script. I mean, just the basic XMonad setup.

Yeah it could very well be the compositor.. When I got it to work I could load the desktop and launch terminals, but everything was operating extremely slow and basically the only way to make a window update was to launch another window which caused a screen redraw. I suspected the compositor as well but haven't had the chance to debug things.

@@SavvyNik I am going to try it on VMware with the compositor. The only thing I don't like about VMware Workstation is, in order to have a UEFI with a Linux guest, you have to use the settings for a Windows 10 install. I haven't really looked at the documentation though.

I just like to keep up-to-date with the latest and greatest as far as my installed packages go. I just got to used to doing -Syu instead of -S. Either is completely fine depending on how you want to manage your system.

This isn't meant for Mint. Gentoo and Arch are the only two distros supported at the moment.

If you only see the console and the script installed properly you may have missed the steps to start the x server and then exec the xmonad wm.

@@SavvyNik it worked I just forgot to install KDE because the title was a little confusing WM/desktop I just assumed it was a desktop environment, then I realized it was a Window manager so I just installed KDE and chose xmonad over plasma.

I followed all the steps and still can't get it to work. (I'm new to arch so bear with me). So once I login it just wont boot to the xmonad env rather it just goes to a normal arch bash. I am running this on bare metal and not on a vm. Any help is appreciated

Sounds like you maybe missing the startx or execution of xmonad

Hey so I came up with a solution (this is a common issue with fresh arch installs according to the github). I installed light dm greeter to be able to switch my de from the lightdm selection menu and login from there.

I don't know that starting directly with Arch makes much sense. There are plenty of other beginner distros that will help you understand the Linux environment before jumping in head first into a more advanced setup and environment. My suggestions are usually Ubuntu or Pop!_OS to start out. Confirm that you can actually install a distro first and that you can get comfortable with the terminal before trying to install Arch all through command line.
