For the price they're charging for one of these you may as well go out and purchase a low time Robinson R44 or Schweitzer 300 cbi or if you really can afford it, a Bell 206 would fit the bill nicely, it's the closest helo equivalent to the family car and as a bonus, they can autorotate, not so sure the Xpeng is blessed with such capability and there's a very good reason why the flying car concept has been around since the 1930's and hasn't yet been realized as an everyday thing...oh by the way, a BRS has been tested in a helicopter, it was an unmanned unit but technically speaking the helicopter already has a parachute of sorts, its called the main rotor

The skill required to manually fly an airplane or helicopter is at least an order of magnitude greater than driving. Same goes for the cost of maintenance as well as the consquences of neglecting it. Same goes for the attention to detail required, from pre-flight checks to awareness of weather conditions to monitoring aircraft performance to navigation. Anyone can safely drive a car around an empty track after 10 minutes of training (an hour if it's a manual transmission). Anyone will die if they try to fly after only an hour of training. Giving a car the ability to fly makes less sense than giving a cat scuba diving equipment.

The Flutr (still to get to production) operates more like a drone, stability is managed by a control system, users fly it the same way. It isnt electric though due to weight. The biggest issue they are facing (apart from cash) is noise levels.
@peeemm20322 ай бұрын
Yes, calling this a car is ridiculous - it doesn't appear to have wheels, and can't be operated on a road.... It's functionally a helicopter (just a severely limited one), and should be subject to all of the same restrictions and regulations. But it's electrically powered, so that somehow exempts it from having to deal with reality (just like electric cars)..... Maybe one day, helicopters will be electrically powered, and will be equipped with autonomous guidance systems, collision avoidance etc (if they don't already have elements of this, liked some fixed wing aircraft), but not before the technology has proven itself. Last time I checked FSD in cars was still illegal here.... I can't see it happening in the near future, so I'd be guessing that the possibility of getting this vehicle licenced for general use, and being able to operate it without a pilot's licence would be somewhere between zero, and nothing....

Looking at the rotor placement, we can stop any discussion of ever using this in any place where any person might walk unsupervised at any time. It's not going to happen. So, you could only use this on airports, where there are spinning deadly propellers anyway, or maybe on a fenced-in private property. If, and that's a huge IF, if is ever mass-produced, I suggest that it will have a very different setup. Does anyone here remember the first concepts for the Eviation Alice? With wingtip-Props, in the mistaken assumption that this would reduce induced drag (hint: it doesn't)? The silliest position to put your propellers, for so many reasons. The flight test vehicle used a much more conventional layout.

Putting aside the medical concept, there could still be some potential, although I too struggle at this stage to see any immediate benefit over a mobility scooter. Advanced automated collision avoidance systems similar to driverless cars extended to function three dimensionally could work. In other words, the only input for 'pilots' would be to populate a 'destination' box, eg, the ' Trowel and Hammer' car park.

@gerardwood40592 ай бұрын
A real helicopter with engine failure can actually glide and land far more safely than a small plane, all helicopter pilots are trained to do it.
@Baerchenization2 ай бұрын
@@gerardwood4059 I'm calling BS on that. A helicopter with power loss has the blades still spinning - and only if it is not too high - DUH !! - that will facilitate a maybe rough landing still. Any ultra-light, glider etc can completely fail and always land safely, well, in princple, thanks to the parachute, obviously.
@gerardwood40592 ай бұрын
@Baerchenization you decend fast and the air flow keeps the rotor blades at full speed. The stored momentum in the blades gives you just enough lifting energy to make a controlled crash landing. Very hard to get right but possible .

With liquid fuels you reach the vicious circle of diminishing returns where adding extra fuel doesn't get you extra range as the weight of the fuel and structure needed to contain it adds weight and drag that bites into the payload and you need to burn extra fuel to keep it in the air, so you pack more fuel... The upside is that as you burn fuel it all gets lighter and easier to move and if you're not after max range, then don't completely fill the tanks and save the weight. With batteries you're at max weight the whole way and there is no advantage of a 1/2 charge. I may help to remove some insufferable rich prats from the gene pool, so that's nice.
