@@WowSuchFrames Dude, don't get me wrong, I get your frustrations. But going on such extreme comparisons will only make yourself feel worse. I'm from a third world country but can be considered one of the lucky ones, born with a better hand than some of my friends who are struggling to even get their Wi-Fi running. I'm sitting here writing this comment within the safe confines of my home while those my age halfway across the world are getting theirs bombed. So yeah, the world is unfair, no disagreements there. xPetu himself even acknowledged that he had privilege. But those things were never the takeaways from my comment, and probably wasn't xPetu's too. Ofc I'm never going to reach the same heights as xPetu, and it's clearly impossible to apply that standard to everyone. The way the world works is that effort ≠ results, there's a whole lot of factors at play. We like to believe that hard work pays off, but sometimes it doesn't. Yet, it is that belief that keeps me and my most admirable friends going. To them, giving their 101% gave their family a ticket out of poverty. To others, 101% may give them a perfect GPA while also being extremely skilled at a game. After all, we all end up dead anyway, might as well make the most out of our insignificant, meaningless existence. I sincerely hope my words could put things into perspective for you.

Petu is right, sleep is something top performing athletes, and the top 1% of the 1% abuse in their craft (We even saw Faker post his almost perfect sleep score on Instagram before winning worlds). Sleep is so vital for function and I wish I discovered this sooner but last year I changed my life for the better. I quit energy drinks and coffee and only had a small cup of matcha tea in the mornings. I went to bed at the same time EVERY night instead of staying up spamming ranked games and consuming caffeine, sleep was no longer negotiable for me. I feel better and I perform better in and out of game. Overall I'm much happier just from tracking and maintaining good sleep alone. Thank you for this wonderful video Petu!

26:50 What you're talking about here is what they call in psychology context and state-dependent memory. Context dependent means; say for example you are studying new words for a language you are learning. Then the next day you have a test about these words. If you make the test in the same room or even a similar environment to the one you studied in then it's easier to retrieve what you learned when you studied. State dependent memory is the same, but instead of the context it's about the state. So for example if you consumed a lot of caffeine or if you were irritated or happy while studying. If you also drink coffee or are happy when making the test, you'll have an easier time remembering the stuff you learned.

based. I am also in CS and my gpa is 3.04/4 (B), 1. I sleep too much (partially cuz of depression) 2. I don't eat well (fast food) 3. I consume caffeine after 12 pm 4. I cut corners (context switching between courses, not fully reading the assignment, half assing the assignments) 5. I don't exercise regularly (go for runs every 2 weeks, walk everyday) my productivity will sky rocket if I : 1. figure out which direction I want to go towards 2. fix my poor habits 3. learn how to focus
@player_07067 ай бұрын
It's better to take small steps to accomplish goals, so here are my recommendations, but you can do whatever you want: 1 Figuring out "the direction" could mean thinking about what will make you happy to do every day (or most days). If after a while you're not sure, allow yourself to try new things and fail. Failing is important because it's always better to learn from your mistakes as soon as possible. 2 Set precise tasks that you WILL or WILL NOT do tomorrow. For example, "I'll clean my room tomorrow." Setting yourself small but doable tasks is better than setting far and ambiguous goals like "I'll fix my poor habits." 3 What helps me the most when I don't want to do something because it's too boring or stressful is thinking about why I'm doing it. Finding purpose and sense in the things we do is key because then you'll stop fighting it, and you will do it because it MAKES SENSE. We're all here to improve so I hope you do well in life internet friend :D

This video is intended to maximize your potential in a domain. Working a 9-5 could be a good indicator that trying to reach challenger in league might not be the best for your actual situation. The idea is pretty close to "how to maximize productivity" and that includes knowing when to stop working. You can still play after a 9-5, but maybe a competitive, ranked game is not the best idea for the other aspects of your life. Maybe a casual game that don't take that much focus won't interfere with your schedule as much. (Not trying to lecture or anything, just sharing what i believe is a perspective aligned with this video) I see where you come from, since i have the same problem, and my approach will be to get my reps on. my competitive games on the weekend. ChatGPT. Also if you are using ChatGPT to read research papers, make sure to either input the abstract at the very end or don't include the abstract all together, and then have it summarize it for you. My favorite is to use a combination of different free services, as I find Microsoft Copilot GPT 4 is strong in searching on the web, but ChatGPT is generally stronger at everything else. Here's one example what I might do: 1. I use ChatGPT to read the initial paper, then have it generate a summary. 2. I prompt ChatGPT to provide a list of questions that might help me learn it better. 3. I prompt Microsoft Copilot with those questions. 4. I then take Microsoft Copilot's responses and ask ChatGPT to interweave the answers whenever the technical keyword or concept comes in. 5. I start chugging information not alcohol. Hope this can help a bit.

This is very good advice. I would also recommend picking up what I call a "for fun hobby". Something that you enjoy, can improve in, and also don't care much about beyond enjoying it. What it does is : creates a space where you're safe to make low stakes mistakes without any fear of repercussions, which helps winding down all the built in pressure for constantly working on important goals without giving in to the impulse to do inefficient stuff like watching KZbin shorts and the like. For example whenever I'm not working I like to cook. I don't want to be a cook, but I enjoy the process of cooking and learning new recipes, which means that I'm still focused on my task whenever I'm cooking but there's no pressure to succeed and no fear of failing.

Excellent teachings and inspiration of realizing and understanding self-discipline! Especially in the era where we are more free to do, and one can personally notice the benefits in "doing less", "focusing on one thing at a time", "allowing ourselves times of boredom", and "finding moments of doing some activities alone". Essentially gaining more from your life - not meaning the possibility to achieve more or climb higher as they are byproducts - but focusing on basics/fundamentals and not skipping them. Living your life in a more meaningful way. As a second thing, it is wonderful to realize other young people who have grasped some fragment of wisdom and are now sharing that. Some of your advice was new to me, and makes me now consider the importance of it and how can I adapt the teaching into my own life. Thank you for the reminders. Thank you for inspiring! You being you is awesome!

i basically failed my physics bachelor at eth bc of league and am stuck in it now. i came in a downward spiral and strugge to break it. i think i thought of every point you made before beside the "focus days" and at some point applied them in my life. now i dont know how to get back to it. if everything is established maintaining it is different (not easier) than building these habits. also its hard for me to find goals and commit to somethig. thanks for the video it gave me motivation when im at a deep low. im on it to become a pilot and wish to find the way of achiving this goal. i think the topic of the video is very important to be talked about the way you did (maybe bc i agree and came to almost identical solutions)

Same, brother. No degree, no (quality) job, 25 and little prospects. Did very poorly in school growing up (ADD and troubled home life) so getting back on the saddle has been hard. I also came to a lot of these conclusions -- for me, I've just been starting at the smallest, easiest things, and slowly acclimating, then moving on to the next. Personally speaking, working out is very important, and it was the simplest improvement to my life that I made that took the least effort. Physical activity has done more for my mental health and productivity than any psychological session I've ever had. Whenever I backslide, I can always feel the 'velocity' of the downward spiral ten times harder when I miss multiple workouts. In the end, change is something you have to slowly, gradually work at. It's difficult to do it all at once, so start by trying to break it down into manageable chunks. Instead of comparing yourself to other people, take stock of where you were last month, and where you are now. Did you improve, or backslide? If you are doing worse, what happened, and was it something you could have avoided? If you're doing better, you're one step closer to digging yourself out of the trench you're in. At least, that's what I'm doing. Someday, we'll make it.

You are truly describing the method I use to run a business (startup) and still have time to play some games with high performance but with differences of course in some standards. In general, you earn my subscription and for the first time I heard someone talk about the point "don't play after 6 pm" because I keep tell people around me about it and everyone just ignore my advices and still make the same mistake over and over again. Btw, I also have very high grades as a computer science with various competitive games I have played along the academic journey.

Everything about higher level studies is about min-maxing things in your life and I'm shocked they don't teach you that earlier in life because it's quite broken irl. W video from W streamer.

Interesting thoughts for learning/training at the highest level. Possible caveats occurring to me: - at lower levels, grinding/learning via exposure might be more important, just to more or less learn unconsciously. I.e., while auto-piloting is suboptimal, one first has to get to the point via exposure/internalizing many things to be able to auto-pilot to a specific level to then focus on more targeted optimizations - while two-loss cutoffs might make sense for a high-winrate player (or when really trying to only play in the best state possible), people are supposed to at some point win ~50%, and a few losses in a row are statistically not unlikely. Of course, tilting/mood affecting subsequent games has to be watched out for, I guess it depends a lot on how well one can reset their mental? - on a related note, I wonder how much one should consider the skill of the players in the match/the quality of the team composition for decision-making about stopping playing. Idk, horrible team comps/vastly mismatched players might be only a problem below high-elo? Also, personally, I need music while playing/working to distract from my Tinnitus and calm my mind, no (silent) monk mode for me please xD Edit: Just food for thought, I wonder how much suboptimal play helps or hinders long-term progress at which point of the learning journey. Some might argue that one needs to make mistakes to learn from them, and suboptimal play helps to create more errors to review :D
@JessMarieGehrig7 ай бұрын
I suspect that, at certain points along the learning curve, even with optimal sleep and focus that you will make mistakes anyways. Playing only when you can optimize your ability to play will help you actually recognize and learn from mistakes that are genuinely mistakes in your micro/macro decision-making, as opposed to mistakes that occur purely for a lack of focus (e.g., 'oops I didnt see the Jinx ult incoming' or even just slower reaction times for dodging, etc.)
@Paul-hq1ws7 ай бұрын
i find it very agreeable, i started focussing on sleep and having some non work time to balance my life out, but also optimized days where i could just work without getting interrupted by lectures and it helped me alot.

Great vid here Petu, really solid advice, I myself struggled with academics all the way through my school years, until i hit university. Once there i had a different midset of work, and applied a almost regimented reigeme to my studies, 2 hours every day, minimum of intense study, alone, regardless of time or if i had already had classes that day, it was simply a necessity to me. And looking back on that i feel that that one decision was the only thing that kept me ahead of the curve, as that when my classmates and I had had a 4 hour lab session, they would call it quits then and there, but i persisted, and i felt much better for it mentally. One thing i do agree on is your priority of sleep etc, however i will say that as time goes on and for example I have gotten more and more responsibilties, such as working 8-5 every day, traveling 6 hours once a month to go to the office, you cannot control them all. For example if i was to not play games past 6pm, i simply wouldnt be able to play anyhting until the weekends, and that for me would be detrimental to myself, as i would be forcing myself to not be able to do the things i like (if that makes sense). Allowing yourself to be bored is also a good one, as i then tend to lean into something like a book, as appose to doom scrolling on a mind numbing app like YT shorts and Twitter. Thanks for the upload!

Petu, when you announced that you were done with your masters classes, I commented that I too graduated with perfect GPA in my masters in engineering, but how I had to give up LoL for the time being. This video was very enlightening to me and I thank you for posting it. This really shows how much thought you put into everything that you do and is making me considering making some adjustments in my life. I graduated 10 years ago (yes, been playing league since beta XD), and I am now in another phase in my life working in the aerospace/defense industry, married, raising my two kids, etc. Even though our situations are not the same, your advice still applies in a way. Currently, my gaming life is limited to when everyone else goes to sleep, so I have to work on my time management; not for the sake of improving my gaming, but improving my balance as a whole. Equilibrium. I think you are Shen IRL.
