XPG S70 Blade 2TB PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD install on PS5 Disc Version

Unboxing and install of the XPG S70 Blade 2TB PCIe Gen4 M.2 on my PS5 Disc Version.
What drew me to this M.2 SSD was that it met and surpassed all the requirements listed on Playstation.com and was also a very good bang for the buck. There were a fair bit of 1TB ones available but not that many 2TB ones and the 4TB ones in my opinion for now are too much money.

You happen to know if a PC with a compatible slot is required to upgrade firmware on the Blade?

@@chrisvernon9868 From what I had read, it didn't seem like it would require much upgrades but I would think your logic seems sound. But remember the PS5 format is a bit unique too.

It is. I did find an m.2 to usb 3.1 enclosure. At anyone’s own risk, should be able to upgrade the ssd firmware to get a little better performance out of it. Also note there are reports of bricked drives from a version that was pulled, so maybe not a good idea until the rev is stable lol

I have the 1tb version. Picked it up on Amazon dirt cheap, then grabbed a aftermarket heat sync. Does the job, without checking what filmware it was reading around 6200 which is fine.

Nice find! I looked at the 1Tb too but with games now needing crazy amount of space, I went the 2tb route

you can get a cheap m.2 external enclosure to update the firmware on pc without having to install it to an m.2 slot on your motherboard.

I got this but the screen took a long time to load before it asked me to format then it was read at only 3000mb. Any ideas?

I would try reaching out to the manufacturer and see what they say, a previous comment mentioned they had a "bad drive" too

Is it possible to further improve thermals with adding an extra thermal pad/paste below the heat spreader ?

Not much room there, I did had the little pegs that lift it providing more airflow

I stuck mine in and am asked to format it, and then it acted all kinds of weird, then shut off repaired, and now it doesn't detect it at all. . I took it out and started it and then reinstalled it, and it still won't detect it ..idk what to do

Hate this for you, couple of suggestions come to mind 1 - Make sure your PS5 has the latest software 2 - try reinstalling it 3 - Not sure if you bought it via the amazon link but they're usually really good about returns/replacements, maybe you just got a defective one Best of luck and hopefully you get it fixed soon

It's actually on sale on amazon now, link in the description. And you need the blade version for the PS5 as it's the thinner version.

Can I use a different heatsink that I bought separately? It's one that has two thermal pads for top and bottom of ssd and ventilation

You can certainly use a different heat sink since theirs needs to be added but just be mindful that you don't have much height to work with

Any overheating issues or speed issues from that thin heatsink? do you recommend putting a normal heatsink? or would the one that comes with the ssd work perfect

No issues at all and it gets used a lot, Mind you that "depth" is an issue which is why I went with the "blade" version compared to the normal one.

You don't have to, you can run it as is. And in terms of if there is a newer version one I presume that would depend on when you purchase it.
