It's funny. There are about 4 or 5 reviewers who I regularly go to when deciding wether to buy a game. And this time they are exactly split in half. One half is severly disappointed, the other half loved the game (and one thinks it's OK). This has to be one of the most controversial games of all time.

Ehhh not really.. Most reviewers aren't giving it's story high praises. Tbh I personally agree with JeremyJahns idea of this being the 3rd game instead of the 2nd so I could have grew to care about Abby before she killed Joel and her having a friendship with Ellie would have added to the revenge story.. instead of Abby's story being 90% unrelated to Ellie. I didn't really care for either side by the end.

There's a difference between a complicated story and a haphazard story. Imagine a mechanical watch, it has a lot of pieces which makes it complex but they all come together to do something well, that's what a good complex story is like. Now imagine that same watch, but broken. It has the same degree of complexity, but the parts do not work together to create a beautiful whole. A similar analogy would be the difference between a piece from Bach and a piece of noise music. Noise music can be as complex as Bach but it is not as good as Bach because that complexity does not work well together to create a beautiful whole. In short, the former is "good-complex" and the latter is "bad-complex". Dunkey thinks of Abby's story as being "good-complex" while xQc thinks of it as being "bad-complex". xQc is not agreeing with Dunkey.

You can make a bad story EASILY. ive watched and played so many things with forgettable and badly created stories and characters. The thing is that when i see some playthroughts like XQC´s, i know why they don´t at least accept the fact that other people like the game. That´s because they hate Abby and don´t care about her side. Abby saved Lev and Yara, she cared about her friends, her father died. Killing Joel was a mistake, yes! but she notices that. After she killed him, people who are emotionally into the game, can sense that she is not satisfied, she doesn´t feel the relief she thought she was going to feel. Honestly looking at chat and xqc, most people hate the game cos Joel died. Not the delivery or anything, they just dislike it simply cos they took that direction. Sure, you can say you can do this and that and other things different but in the end what made people really mad was that Joel died and that this was very different from the first game. @@thegoblin000 Hell, to go even further...The Big Lebowski? That film practically spits in the face of every supposed "law" popular in these standards of criticism even for its own standards. It's a crime drama with so many moving parts every ten minutes until...well the FINAL ten min minutes, it can't decide on what it's characters need to do to get the money for ten seconds, then it's sometimes up in the air whether or not they need to get the money in the first place, multiple plot threads (Bowling tournament, where the ringer briefcase ended up, where the original million dollars ended up going towards, whether or not Bunny went back to the farm) are never answered, characters such as Jesus, and DaFino don't advance the overall plot or go anywhere in any meaningful way, and there are multiple dream sequences that are sometimes entirely pointless. Objectively bad mess with too many subplots and things going on right? And well...when the movie was first released people actually DID think that. Audiences and critics alike. Now it's considered a timeless classic with more positive reception as time went on, has an entire following, and most people seeing it now a days will tell you it's a pretty damn good film that's also hilarious.

I think the idea behind the lack of context is to make it more difficult for the player to forgive Abby. I didn't want to kill Abby by the end of the game, but a lot of people still did. (Spoilers) That's not what Dunkey said, dunkey was saying that the players were clearly angry at the last of us 2. But that they aren't really sure what they're specifically mad about. He's trying to say that they might be mad at the direction the game took because of the fact they killed off Joel. It would be similar to killing of clementine early on in the second walking dead game and just focusing on other characters afterwards. It would feel a bit like a kick in the teeth... it might even make the fans mad.

It gets you into Ellies mind set and makes you feel the rage she's feeling and makes you want to get revenge on Abby and everyone who was responsible, which is why I found the game so amazing when I started to play as Abby, don't get me wrong I was pissed that the game was forcing me to play as her, but as I continued to play and started to consider her side of the story and why she took the actions she did I started to see her perspectives. I see everyone in the comments talking about how Abby got a better ending then Ellie did, but did she really. She lost everyone she ever cared about to the hands of Ellie and Ellie lost everyone she ever cared about to the hands of revenge. It's honestly beautiful how in the end she decides that it is no longer worth it choosing to forgive Abby for her hateful act remembering her final talk with Joel when us the player went about thinking it had ended with them never coming to terms we actually realize that she was willing to try and forgive Joel for his selfish act and so Ellie takes this and forgives Abby for hers

funny thing is both Dunkey and PVC did this. However the way Dunkey clip chimped other reviewers to state their reason for hating the game was because of Joel's death was really disingenuous. SomeOrdinaryGamer actually had a very valid argument as to why he didn't like the game as did Critical and many other reviewers and fans. Sure there are idiots out there that hate the game because they thought it pushed an agenda or other that hate it solely because Joel died and I do not agree with them. But this story has many many sloppy problems when it comes to the pacing, writing, handling of side characters and disconnect with the game play and the story. Not to mention the ending went on for way too long. So to simply ignore people with real criticism because some people dislike the game for terrible reasons only makes you come off as either a pseudo intellectual/buffoon or fan boy. The game isn't a 3/10 sure but it sure as hell isn't even close to a 8/10. Everything besides the directing and writing of the story was excellent, no one can deny that ever and that is why it is an average game at best.

But after the past few weeks my honest opinion about TLOU2 is that it's a visual masterpiece, but with barely little improvements on gameplay since the last game which you'll either like it or you won't, but the main problem of the game being is that it's a heavily story driven one, but the story is poorly done in many places with a dime and dozen message, old characters deconstructed and new ones that are genuinly uninteresting and unimportant, lot of the game relies on plain shock value which just like jumpscares are overused and cheap attempts to provoke an emotional response. What I feel could've worked: Ellie and Dina hunting down Abby, with some actual character development for Dina > Lead into some Joel and Ellie in flash backs > Flash back of Joel saving Ellie from the fireflies > Abby's story, and her searching for Joel(but she gets pictures of him, and keeps them on her at all times to remind herself of her hatred or some dumb shit, so that it's not just "oh hurr durr your name is Joel?? With Dunkey, if you followed the fallout of his review you can clue in that this wasn't an opinion thing. The guy got his feelings hurt so bad he did a whole act on a stream where he pretended to sleep to own the "haters." When that didn't make his audience laugh, he went on hiatus and just made reaction content. TLOU2's real draw is to people who want to feel smart without being smart. I guess there was something about people pointing out flaws in his review that made him *genuinely* upset. The thing is that even I get better ideas of how to make this story for a game: First, show us the perspective of Abby's father back when joel shoved a surgical knife directly to his throat, just to get a taste of what Joel actually did to humanity and the man who wanted to save it. We would get a connection to abby herself throught her father, making her gameplay more meaningful and interesting, find out more about her and what her father knew. Fuck we don't even know about how the fungus actually works! Then LET US PLAY AS JOEL, even for a moment, and then take him from us just as he was taken from Ellie. It would have made it even stronger and evil, but real in some way, let us fail at surviving, and ourselves be responsible for joel's failure, his death is our failure, the player, who at this point seems to be able to control anyone, please. Maybe these two small changes could have made a real difference to our start. Now back to the main problem. We don't know why Ellie really couldn't kill abby, I mean, maybe she hated Joel, but she did all of it for him, which tells me that she always had the intention to forgive him. I feel like she just had no actual thoughts, like she was just a character due to this decision of the writers. I don't want to say they ruined, but I just don't think I can ever forgive them for that.

Honestly, I can appreciate what they were trying to do with the story but they did not deliver it properly. If like a third of the gameplay was removed and the pacing was fixed and not time travel bruh moments 24/7 I honestly believe that the game's story would be a lot better and much more satisfying of an experience.
