I have Auditory Processing Disorder, and I'm a community organizer while also working on several books. I've been using Otter Voice Notes for several years and this would take it to the next level, particularly with how having a mobile device out for captioning has negative attention effects on everyone in the conversation when I'm using it for captions in meetings (as shown by a lot of cognitive & social science research). I would really love to be able to meet my accessibility needs without having a negative impact on the attentional needs of others in meetings.

The most common issue for me is the speaker with a mask. Even with hearing aids, I struggle to understand. I wonder how good it does in that situation? And put them behind plexy glass the task of understanding speech becomes impossible. Remote microphone paired with my hearing aids help. I would like to see how this device would work in that situation.

Hey Wayno, That's the perfect situation as I would imagine that the glasses would pick up on the visual clues that youre missing from the mask. Thanks for watching, Matthew

Wow, this is great news!! Thank you for such a thorough and clear description and review. This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for to help my father-in-law. He's gone about as far as possible with hearing aids and still struggles to follow conversations. As you rightly said, after we've been out to a restaurant or other venue, he is exhausted from trying to follow the conversations. I'm so heartened to hear about this product and will be purchasing forthwith! Thank you so much! ❤

OMG❣I knew you would come back with great things from Vegas. This is brilliant. But you stabbed me in the heart when you said it isn't on Apple. I'm all in with Apple. My my hearing aids work with all my devices. My hearing aids are $6,000. These glasses are $375... It is a no brainer & I would use them everyday! But I have a MacBook, iPad mini, iPhone, iWatch & iPod Pro's. I am lost without them. I cannot work without them speaking directly into my hearing aids or I showing me cc - it is about 50-50. But as the person said before me, mask wearers add a whole another layer of muffled hearing problems, my Apple did nothing to help me with the either. I am better than the average bear with lip reading, but I never realized how much until face masks showed up. I also sign well, but only deaf people sign. So, what's a girl to do? I do not relish the idea of two phones and spending even more on an Android 12. Geez, I thought I had this all figured out! But I would LOVE to buy these glasses! What other things did you discover in Vegas? The 21st Century hearing tech is a wonder

Hey Tedi! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! As far as I understand there is certain software running in new android devices which allow for the augmented reality aspect of the glasses to run, however isn’t present in Apple. Of course this could all change in the future though. Lots of videos on the way so stay tuned 😊 Matthew

There are unfortunately a couple of incompatibilities with Apple. Firstly they don't support USB-C (yet) and they also don't have the right chips (Qualcomm Snapdragon) inside them to power the glasses. There are dongles and adapters available and we hope to be able to support them soon, but they still won't give the full AR experience. Our recommendation is to buy a cheap Android phone (they start from ~$150), which you just use for XRAI / the glasses, that way you don't have to switch anything, you just use it as a "compute" unit for the glasses.

Fabulous idea. I depend on the written word to help me with my hearing in multiple instances. This, if it really works, could be a brain and confidence-strengthening bonus. I can only imagine the first rollout might be less than perfect, but the price is affordable, especially compared to what I pay for top-of-the-line hearing aids. I use my mic in numerous situations and my bilingual daughter and grandchildren who live in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland often speak Italian. I love that it is a new way to address an ongoing problem, and I love the story about the grandfather who inspired the technology. However, I, too, am an iPhone user so will need to wait.

Yes, I would use these glasses every day in everyday communication with my husband, in stores, doctors' offices, banks, etc. I am 73 and already use an Android talk to text app, Live Transcribe, at all of my appointments and in very small group settings. HAs don't work well for me in the first place and masks are just prohibitive for my understanding anything. Also, I do not sign and do not read lips. I also now enjoy going to the movies again, at Regal Theaters, with my husband and my 12 year old nephew. Regal has had free cc glasses that work well for me, considering my profound hearing disability. CC is a supportive way of life for me. I can't wait to try a pair of these glasses. Thank you for the video.

Why not use the glasses as a support for a hearing aid that has one or two directional front microphones (near the glases) directed at the person speaking frontally and that picks up the background sound as something distant and takes that processed audio to the inner ear with the help of the temple of the glasses? I believe that the main handicap of classic headphones (I wear Resound headphones) is the difficulty for their rear microphones to pick up the voices in front , well as a priority. I wouldn't mind wearing glasses that, in addition to helping vision, help better capture frontal conversations and house all the necessary technology in their body. Is there something similar on the market (without subtitles) ? What do you think about this option of glasses + hearing aids? Thanks from Spain.

You mentioned it can pair with "remote microphones". In theory Roger On would be ideal for this, however I wonder if it would work, as I don't think Roger mics can be used as a standard input mic for devices other than hearing aids?
@HearingTracker Жыл бұрын
Hey Kye, it all depends on the pairing protocols. In theory the tech is there, but I’d need to reach out to Xrai to answer this. Matthew
@xraiglass Жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out Kye! So if the phone is paired with a hearing device such as Roger, it might work as an input bluetooth microphone as one of our employees was able to pair it with her cochlear implant as an audio device option. At this time it can only take in one audio source. Hope this helps!

This is great news! I was at movie theatre this past weekend and missed about half of the dialogue! I mentioned to my friend it would be neat to be given glasses that create closed captions. Then I see this article in newsletter. I will look into these glasses by visiting their website. Clip ons would be great as I wear prescription glasses. I imagine the glasses will aesthetically improve over time or with other manufacturers getting into industry. Thanks for the hopeful news. Stephen F. Canada

@@xraiglass I think you'd be best off creating them as as a fits-over option. I'm so picky about my daily wear prescription eyeglasses that I bought two pairs used when the frames I tolerate best were discontinued. I had clip-on sunglasses for some of my eyeglasses years ago but found I much prefer being able to go to the corner drugstore and get a $20 pair of fits-over sunglasses whenever I inevitably break or lose the pair I've been using.

I am enthused about the possibility that a pair of eye gl;asses can provide captioning with and for my daily interactions with others as an individual with significant hearing loss. I do have a question... I suppose that trying to read the captioning on the eye glasses would not be safe while driving a car or am I missing something? Thank you.

I think these would be great if they were wireless and didn't burn through battery on the phone. Overall, since it requires plugging into the phone with the transcription also showing on the phone, I'm not sure why anyone would want a clunky set of glasses when we can just use the apps to transcribe on our phones. Again, if they were wireless, incognito....

I would like to hear comments from actual users that still struggle with hearing aids in noisy environments such as a restaurant. Are they better than Google live transcribe? And are they helpful at the movies or at a lecture ? Obviously I would expect them to be amazing in quiet settings with a couple of other people.
@xraiglass Жыл бұрын
Great question! It can pick up different speakers around you. It uses a technology called Beam Forming, which effectively places a wall around you and the speaker(s) so as to not pick up the conversation around you and it has noise cancellation built into it. However, we recommend differing microphone options either phone, glasses, speaker, or even a bluetooth mic dependent on your environment e.g. in a boardroom, or in a noisy bar.

Since they're using Bluetooth, they must be using a battery, right? Rechargeable? I also wouldn't buy them until they are Apple compatible. If someone needs their vision prescription changed regularly/yearly, how easy is it to change prescription? Are there separate lenses that can be 'swapped out' without having to get entirely new XRAI glasses? Finally, as someone who is fussy about the aesthetic of my glasses, I can't see wearing these all day as my regular pair; they do NOT have any cosmetic appeal.

Purchasers MUST be aware in the USA as to State Law regarding the legal requirements relative to recording conversations. In States requiring bilateral consent, in the absence from the other person of explicit permission for the recording and storing of any communications between/among others, that would, e.g., in PA be a 3rd Class Felony to do so w/o such permission. While I'm not a lawyer, I'd respectfully suggest that any purchaser have legal advice from an attorney whom the trust within their local jurisdiction. Just sayin'
@mimisemptynest2735 Жыл бұрын
I think the ADA would get around this. I've been told I can't use live transcribe in certain environments due to company policy of non recording. I've simply said, I can appreciate your company policy, but are you attempting to violate my rights as a disabled person? It usually shuts them UP!!!
