Agreed that it doesn't need to break records to be good. Take boulder dash and voyage for example. I do however find Orion to be disappointing, especially since it's in the same park as diamond back. They didn't need a coaster like Orion. They should've gotten something that would become the new #1 in the park. Once I get the chance to go to King's Island, I expect Mystic Timbers to be my #1 in the park with Orion and diamondback trailing behind. I wouldn't be surprised if many enthusiasts prefer Diamondback over Orion.

If anyone is smart, they'll realize the thrills that are yet to be tapped in the enclosed coaster style. With how cheap and thrilling single rail coasters are, and how relentless and tight they can be in their layouts, to build one in a warehouse so that you have the world's most thrilling dark ride would be easy. Indoor coasters that feature a lot of dark are instantly more intense due to the inability to expect many of the drops and turns, and you can theme them so many different ways.

According to a Federation Aviation Administration filing, Hersheypark sought and received approval for construction of a new coaster with a height of 220 feet -- eight feet taller than Skyrush, the park’s tallest coaster. This is a subject I have been thinking about a lot myself and I'm so glad you touched upon it. How do you keep up when it's always Bigger, Taller, Faster. I don't know how these parks do it. Ultimately it's the patrons who are gonna pay with higher prices. Well crafted, comfortable, high thrill coasters are really what I'm interested in. The thing about the UK is not that our rides are bad, not at all, but the quantity of them. They are only 3 main big parks in the UK: Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Alton Towers have too many restrictions to count and cannot build over 65ft. Thorpe Park doesn't have the money or space Alton towers have and are also placed under a 30m height limit (Stealth is a big exception) and Black Pool Pleasure Beach have hardly any land and money, and also has planning restrictions. There's no over BIG parks in the UK. Drayton Manor isn't innovating and is closing rides left and right, flamingo land isn't a theme park, there's literally no theming, and lightwater valley have had their fame stolen by the crash of The Twister and also was not really a theme park.

I don't think it's the end of record breakers at all. There's still going to be demand for the tallest, longest, fastest, steepest, most inversions, strongest G forces (though this one's kinda capped out), quickest launch, etc. But parks are definitely focusing more on ride experience, and when we do see another recordbreaker it's not going to exist just to break the record. Heck, even in the tail end of "recordmania" we saw more of a focus on ride experience. Fury isn't just the tallest coaster with a conventional lift, it's also an absolutely insane high-intensity ride packed with crazy G-forces and tons of airtime. Smiler doesn't just have the most inversions, it's also constantly giving you hang time through every single one of those stalled inversions and doing it with style with it's unique Orwellian themeing. On a separate note, I do NOT want to see sports team themed coasters become a trend. Sure, it brings in the crowds, but it tends to bring in the _wrong_ kinds of crowds - the sports hooligans. I'd rather _not_ see amusement parks become yet another battleground for crazed sports fans.

I can tell you right now as a Kennywood employee that there's a strong chance that Steel Curtain broke some attendance records. I think it also has to do with the increasing marketshare of launched coasters that enable entirely different design approaches than the traditional style of giant fucking lift hill followed by an assortment of hills and swooping turns. Not that those aren't fun, but they're very expensive, and I expect the future in the hands of multi-launches, switch tracks and twisting, ground hugging layouts. Personally I'm more interested in firsts than in records anyway. Records can be bought, firsts have to be invented. Money versus smarts. For example the upcoming F.L.Y. coaster, the world's first launched flying coaster. It's an entirely new thing, not just an old thing but taller or faster, so it's exciting.

There is another reason Orion might not have taken the record away from Fury, there is a rumor going around that it was Mason that dropped the ball, and denied plans that CF.KI had, they were planning Orion to be 330, but the plans was denied, so they made it 287, since the city did not want a coaster over 300 ft. I don't know if its true, but the person said the original plans for Orion is at the city of Mason building, if anyone wants to try and debunk it. Cedar Fair has been doing very well, and just posted a record 3rd quarter, so it seems unlikely the price tag is a reason, Leviathan was 306, Fury was then 325 and Cedar Fair always says they like to up their own records. I'm sure they could have made Orion a 330 ft coaster with $30 million if they really wanted too. Mason has been known for being really strict. Steel Vengeance is bringing in the crowds, people love it, Cedar Point is doing extremely well this year. Parks don't just build these big coasters for a one year boost in attendance and profits, they do it for the long term, gold passes for Cedar Point are selling like hotcakes, plus Cedar Fair showed a 6% increase in attendance, revenue up 8% net revenue up 7%. No I don't think it's the end of record breaking coasters.

Mystic Timbers Fanboy I don’t know if it’s true or not. The only plans we know thats 100% is the ones we already know about. I’ve only seen one person say this is what happened. It doesn’t help that Mason has been known for being kind of strict, and doing things that the park doesn’t care for. We know Cedar Fair could have done it, they have the money, we know they’ve always talked about outdoing their previous coasters, take Valravn at Cedar Point, and then beating it with Yukon Striker at Canada’s Wonderland. Then Orion comes around, and people expect it to break some of Fury’s records, and it doesn’t. The vertical drop is nice, but it’s barely a Giga. It is just really strange, that cf would go backwards, not just by a little bit either, but a lot, if this is what they really wanted for KI. I doubt it was.

A great example of this would be various of the coasters at Efteling, in the Netherlands (specifically, Baron 1898 and De Vliegende Hollander / The Flying Dutchman). I think the new vekoma models won't break records but bring us more theming. They are already quite popular in Europe and it might be the future of roller coasters... even if RMC is building bigger ans bigger hybrids and working on the T-rex which could break some records too. However, Europe has always had roller coaster more focused on theming and usually smaller than North America, so this defference may not change.

I completely agree that coaster stats aren't really the deciding factor on whether or not someone is going to visit a park. And I really do hope there's a bigger focus on theming. I'm a fan of amusement parks in general, not just roller coasters (though I do love them dearly). For years large North American park chains like Six Flags, which like to keep everything nice and cheap, have seen theming as an additional cost instead of a potential cost saving measure. They saw theming as the domain of Disney and Universal. I was pleased when West Coast Racers was announced at my home park of Magic Mountain because it appears that Six Flags might be changing its tune. Premiere Rides coasters are fairly cheap, but still really fun and thrilling. Adding the West Coast Customs theming and IP to it is a stroke of genius. Granted, I'm not thrilled with how they further cut costs on the theming and the area the coaster resides in. But I suppose it's a good start for a chain that hasn't really spent big bucks (without Saudi investors) in decades. Either way, West Coast Racers doesn't really break any records whatsoever (4 launches isn't the most of any coaster in the world). But I think the added value of the IP they're using will be a bigger draw.

I'm seriously surprised you didn't bring up Copperhead Strike in this video. It along with Hagrid are perfect examples of what you are talking about here. Copperhead broke zero records, just presented a fun, unique, and well themed ride, and the public ate it up. This year at Carowinds was one of the busiest I've seen. At least as far as Cedar Fair is concerned, smaller themed attractions are what I expect to see for the next several years.

I agree that great theming would be a great thing. Unfortunately, theming in general has been pushed aside to save money. I also love a coaster that uses the terrain. They are so much more fun. But again, money has resulted in clearing land completely and throwing the ride on a slab of cement or field of grass, gravel or dirt. Great theming is the first victim of cost cutting. I couldn't care less if a ride breaks records, I want the whole experience to be exciting and fun.

A lot of European parks have a lot of regulations how they can build new rides, mostly to do with noise and/or visibility. Both Phantasialand and Alton Towers can't have their coasters seen from outside the park (thats why they build down into the ground and put up theming elements around them). So height and speed records are (mostly) out of the question. Taron still opened as the fastest and longest multi-launch, the most intense LSM-launch and the most intersecting point and F.L.Y. will be the longest flying coaster and first launched flying coaster. Alton still has the inversion record.
@fgdgjgjhc
@fgdgjgjhc 5 жыл бұрын
Coasters in Europa are in fact also breaking records, the same way coasters in America do. Taron (mentioned in the end, and also a great coaster) is the longest multi-launch coaster (of this type) in the world. Also, it is the launch coaster with the most self-crossings (116) in the world. And the fastest multi-launch. And the coaster with the strongest LSM. Helix, when it was built, was advertised as the fasted multi-launch coaster in Europe (now beaten by Taron). Before Taron, Novgorod (at Hansa Park) was the one with the strongest LSM. Even smaller parks take part in this record breaking advertising, same way in Europe as in the US. Toverland advertises Troy as the fasted, longest, and highest wooden coaster in BeNeLux. The only other woodies in BeNeLux are: "Joris en de draak" (NL), "Loup-Garou" (BE), and "Heidi" (BE). Sometimes they even give the records as "XXX best wooden rolercoaster in the Netherlands", which just means it beats Joris (both great rides, but different concept with it's double tracks, so not even comparable). And similarly Fenix was advertised as the longest wing coaster in Europa (only competing against "Flug der Dämonen", "Raptor", and "The Swarm"). So, I guess marketing departments are similar everywhere. You have to try to get some superlative to advertise a new coaster, even if it may be somewhat meaningless.

I agree what you sad. I also think when coaster brake the records just forget everything else like: Formula Rosa is fastest but it forgets. The layout is actually forceless lounch(you feel speed but acceleration) bank turns and some airtime hills and it isn't really good at it. Same with kingdaka just lounch, top hat and airtime hill that isn't much it's there for brake the records. Steel dragon 2000 it looks like morgan hyper I'm not really fan of a layout (but I didnt ride it). Smiler have like what 5 corcscrews but I think is better rides than 3 before couse is so disorienting and roughness really doesn't bother me. So actually is maybe better if coaster isn't really record breaking.

I would really love to see more coasters like Verbolten or more updated Eurofighters with Mystery Mine level theming. Even Flight of Fear is a fun coaster that is significantly elevated by its theming. But quality theming really makes for a more entertaining experience, regardless of stats.

I think a coaster needs a certain height to actually work with the energy coming from the drop or launch but at at some point it simply won't matter anymore as it gets blurry and indefinite to distinguish height/speed/angle etc. All that remains is the experience made up of the intensity and how it is delivered. There are too few gigas though ;)

Definitely agree on the theming thing. I still get a kick out of thunder mountain and space mountain while also enjoying x2 and tatsu at SFMM 😁. Rode nemesis a long time ago and still remember it as awesome. Very small compact footprint but the theming and near miss elements are unforgettable lol. I’m looking forward to see how the west coast racers guaranteed dueling element makes it fun. I know that twisted colossus goes from my 3rd fave at SFMM to a very close second behind X2 when it duels but it’s so rare. The high five is epically close and when you see the train come under you in the top gun stall it is insane haha. IMHO coasters don’t have to be big and fast to be fun. Yes those elements are fun but I enjoy a cleverly designed ride just as much. That being said I do believe that a park needs at least one or two shock and awe behemoth type rides to give people a complete coaster park experience. My 2 cents ✌️😋

I see you've mentioned Polish roller coasters such as Lech Coaster or Zadra. So now he have a good example how it works and what people prefer. For now, we've got two major amusement parks in Poland - Legendia with amazing Lech Coaster and Energylandia, which will soon have the most roller coasters in the world. Legendia is known for its old rides and great theming, Energylandia is "the record breakin" one. And guess what - Legendia is often looking just empty, with a very few guests in. Usually you don't even have to wait to ride a Lech Coaster, can you imagine? It's one of the best coasters in Europe! And on the other hand, we've got Energylandia. Literally every coaster is advertised as best, in some categories. Speed (Mirabilandia's Divertical clone) is the highest and fastest water coaster (again, it's a clone), Hyperion is the highest mega coaster in Europe (ofc people tend to think that it's the highest coaster ever) and Zadra was considered as wooden coaster, though it's a hybrid one. And Energylandia attracts hundreds of thousands people every year, literally building new amazing coasters and a few flat rides with great theming every year. Their marketing often just lies, but people are falling for that and coming in. Remember, we are talking about Poland. Our first, new rollercoasters were Energuś, Dragon and Mayan (Vekoma) in 2015, in Energylandia. Earlier, we've got old Soquet from 1987 and some 90' Pinfari, which usually break someone's legs. Here, where people don't know either many coasters or amusement parks, any broken rekord matters. Legendia chose theming and their financial situation is getting worse every year.

In my opinion theming and a good story line add more value to the ride than any record breaking features. A great example of superb theming is the B&M Divecoasters Baron 1898 in Efteling, The Netherlands. The ride is simply gorgious themed and has a fantastic storyline but has never been a record breaker. It's just the whole experience that makes it an amazing ride wich attracts coaster enthousiasts for mall over the world.

I just think Cedar Fair needs to do some more advertising on TV (not in park, like Six Flags). The GP doesn’t know when a new coaster is being built, and so it wouldn’t make too much sense for an increase in attendance to happen. Additionally, everyone knows who Six Flags is, but you ask the average person who Cedar Fait is they look at you like you’re crazy; Cedar Fair needs to establish a brand.

Nothing crazy but maybe a dive loop, inline twist, or corkscrew. While I'm excited we have a giga coaster it still feels like we got son'd by Cedar Fair. To me (just my opinion) it just feels like a taller Diamondback (B&M did that ride too). Hopefully the ride turns out to be great but it feels like something is missing to really make this ride stand out. Especially with Millennium Force in the same state and Fury 325 being owned by the same family of park owners.

personally i don’t care about records - is the coaster is good then the coaster is good. but my issue with orion (clearly my judgement isn’t final because i haven’t ridden it yet) is that aside from the first drop and one ejector hill, most of the layout doesn’t really seem to do anything. fury isn’t great because of its records, it’s great because every 5 seconds, the pace is changed, whether it be a switch in banking, forces, or speed. it literally never lets up. to me, orion’s layout looks “boring.” too much of it just kind of meanders around space, when they easily could’ve added more exciting elements that wouldn’t have changed the price tag. this is actually the exact same problem i have with the leaked wing coaster for KD (whether or not it’s the final blueprint they settled on, we’ll see) and i think the steel prices going up is actually the major reason that more and more B&M layouts are getting less and less exciting. for the record, i think orion is the first time since i became an active enthusiast (so about 15 years) that i haven’t looked forward to a major coaster opening in the US, and it has nothing to do with the records it doesn’t break. i’m usually quite the optimist, actually.

I agree 100% :) I mean Cedar Fair opened Yukon Striker at Canada's Wonderland and that's the current tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster in the world right now, and don't get me wrong it is still a great ride, it's just that records are not everything. The ride itself should be of high quality in order for the crowds to be drawn in and for the ride to be a great success. Yukon Striker is still a success for Canada's Wonderland, don't get me wrong. I've always seen really long lines for it still, but records shouldn't define rides anymore. I know a lot of people wanted Yukon Striker to be even more taller, faster, and longer than Valravn, but come on, that shouldn't define Yukon Striker for what it delivers, because I think it's still a really good ride.

I was on the giga dive coaster hype and was disappointed when it turned out to be 220 ish feet, but ask me if that thought goes through my head during the stall before the drop - still a great ride!

Valid points but I still want a 500 ft lift coaster and would surely travel to ride it.
