Very thorough review, but let me point out a couple of things you glossed over: 1) Weight -- you do note that the 21T LD includes EVERYTHING, including the generator (the heaviest add-on for most boats), dishwasher, washer/dryer, etc., but then you compared it to the Privilege 510 and Outremer which do NOT include any of the options included on the X5 in its Light Displacement. For a better comparison, I just crewed a fully loaded Fountaine Pajot Saba 50 from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas. It came in at 23T with a very comparable equipment list (and a bunch of water toys). I noted VMG and SOG figures slightly below those of the X5, except on a beam reach with 25-35 kt winds (I did not get to experience that on the X5), where the Saba really took off. My notes showed the X5 out performed the FP Saba 50 in lighter winds, perhaps because of the screacher included on the X5. 2) Electrical System -- as you mentioned, the attention to detail is magnificent, but I wish you could have showed a couple examples of how well thought out the electrical is throughout the boat. It is one of the major reasons it won Boat of the Year in 2017. Every cable is labeled -- on both ends and along its run. Each includes a reference number that can be found in the ... 3) Owners Manual -- that you flipped through at the nav station is the most complete document of its kind you will find for any boat I have explored. You get full layouts of the electrical, plumbing, etc. All hardware, rigging, etc. is identified by part number and manufacturer. This, in addition to the internet-based service management you get from the factory are exceptional. 4) Post Sales Support -- while other manufacturers make noise about their sales support, I have yet to hear or see the level of support provided by Xquisite Yachts/Phoenix Marine on any other catamaran. Every single hull produced has benefited from lessons-learned and owner requests. For instance, the extended coach roof of Firefly (the boat at the show) to include more solar panels, will now be standard on future hulls, and is available as a retro-fit to all earlier hulls. Xquisite takes responsibility for repairs not only to the components manufactured by them, but with ALL components they have installed on each boat. Try getting that kind of response from Lagoon/Leopard/FP! With only 10 hulls currently on the water, and (as far as I know) only 1 boat changing hands so far (Tamas & Sara's) there is no secondary market yet, but Xquisite already has plans in-place for creating a "pre-owned" market with all boats fully restored to factory-level quality standards. My only qualms with the X5 are: 1) Ventilation -- as Terysa noted, this is extremely important in the tropics and the X5 is a little sparse in this regard. You will not always be running your AC, especially not while on passage. One of the things I love about the FP Saba and Leopard 50 are the coach roof sun decks. I found myself preferring to sleep up there in the open rather than in my cabin while on passage. The X5 does not have this option. 2) Interior Height and Volume -- at only 5'11" I do not have much of an issue with this, but I did notice that a couple of the locations in the X5 have less headroom than in other boats its size, particularly the forward area of the salon, such as the nav station and settee. I also have to keep reminding myself to keep my head down when walking under the archway on each side. Also for a 50' boat with a fairly broad beam, I also would have liked to see island berths, at least in the aft cabins. 3) Price -- while I think you have under-scored the value proposition of this boat, it is fair to note that pricing of the X5 continues to jump $100K USD (at least) per year. While these price increases have, so far, meant that what were previously options are now included as standard features, this is set to change with the next iteration of the boat. Thanks again for calling my mom! Enjoy Thailand!

I’ve seen this on the high seas it’s pretty robust and handles the rough seas well. What they fail to say is if an owner dodges the maintenance or chooses to not bother, they know and the factory is diagnostically informed of errors or issues via the cloud. They will be at hand to intervene. That is a level of aftersales service no one can beat.

I was looking forward to seeing what you guys thought. I see you love it as much as we do. After sailing it for 6,000 miles, I can confirm it is an outstanding Cat, for sure. The factory tour I took in Cape Town really drove home the point of quality being job 1 for the Xquisite build teams. If we could afford it, this would be our boat. FYI - you are right, the one minor flaw is there is a lack of natural ventilation. The design does sort of expect you to run the AC if it gets really hot . And, yes, I also did not love the glass shower room vs solid walls because in my case I had to share the back guest cabin with another guy and if I had to get up in the middle of the night, I could not turn on the lights or make noise etc in the head, because I would have woken him. This would also be a problem with a spouse who is a light sleeper (Sadly, that would be me). Look forward to your next reviews. Cheers, Craig and Janice

I loved watching your entire voyage Craig. There was so much in your trip that highlights the nuances of cruising in a cat for long distances. The fact that you have a fully enclosed back deck area that you guys used as an extra bedroom during winter temperatures is never talked about. How quiet and convenient having a high quality dishwasher is on long passage when your feeding four or five crew. Was the bread maker a standard option? We got to actually see the after purchase factory support which appeared to be off the charts when your water maker failed due to the ocean conditions. That battery capacity that allows the owner to run their air con all night with using the generator was a total plus. Anyway, your channel is worth the watch. Once again, thank you for your service!

I'd also say saving weight is not necessarily the way to go. For a world cruising cat it's not that important to go fast but comfortable through the waves and be able to sail away from lee shore. So a good angle to the wind is key and also the slamming behavior of the hulls and the bridge deck. Weight can be a good thing in heavy weather.

Great video, Great Boat! I found 3 dealbreakers tho... 1) the curved backrests on the sofas in the lounge area. It was hard to see if the backrest of the sofa inside was also curved. My curent boat is killing me with it’s curved back rests. Never a corner to relax in with your feet up and your back stright. 2) It is over 15m long. In Norway that is the max length of a leisure vessel which you will not need a skippers license to drive. 3) My bank account and the boat price don’t match!

Another great informative review Nick and Terysa. Styling aside, I think this boat is more appealing to novice blue water cruisers. The automation and cloud remote monitoring that comes with it would be comforting to someone with less experience. The downside is becoming complacent and not knowing how your boat really works or staying on top of all systems. That being said, having all that information at your fingertips can be extremely useful and should be used as just another tool. One Trekkie to another “Live long and Prosper!”

Very nice boat and review. Thanks. I would probably give a similar overall rating, but from different scoring. Theresa makes good point about ventilation and access around births. That should knock it down a point. Also, in other videos you pointed out the issues with sail drives, and others point out that there is a huge amount of complexity in this boat. That should knock safety down a point. For example, I think the Antares is better on that. I really like the helm layout and all things considered probably scores even higher in the value for the money category relative to other boats in this price range (if you can afford it). It take the Antares 'i' concept to a whole different level. That tool chest is a jaw drop, and I think somewhere I heard they may even include spares. Wow. The quality and attention to detail gets bonus points. I can see why Nick can't control himself.

(btw Nick ya missed a gap in the stair panel! sin!) 2. to sum up the defining comment from the ever insightful Teresa: the flaws in design choices (not enough natural ventilation) can be solved by throwing barrels of money at the problem (lithium and a/c). 3. 2' longer than mandatory pilot territory for the canal. drat. :( no horn for me thank you. 4. overall though, its probably THE choice if you have the means.

I was watching the video step by step and am way surprised at the price not being very much higher. My one criticism is that I don't think this boat is intended to compete with performance catamarans, so it is not an apples to apples comparison, and to give it such a low mark is not fair. Do you want to get there fast, or do you want to love getting there...and being there...at anchor? Then there is the live aboard aspect: do want space/storage for all you life living stuff, or do you want to live with very little so you can enjoy really fast passage...you can't design both into one boat; no one has yet, have they?

Built for comfort, not speed. A dreamboat! A spaceship? Pfft! What would the cruisers of my generation when we were your current age have thought about the electronics on Ruby Rose? Back then, 1970's, no GPS, no computer, no iPad, a flat nav station for maps and charts and a cubby for the sextant, no smart phone, no GoPro, no Iridium, no kidding! A beautiful boat for sure. On the other hand, your next boat must sing a love song to the both of you! And you will know when that happens. Thanks for the tour. Oh, how about a meet up with UMA and MJ Sailing while the three of you are in the UK? It would be sensational to watch the three crews shoot the breeze. :¬) Webhead USA

I am not an X5 owner but have spent a few days sailing on one. I think the 3 you gave it for performance was far to low. We were sailing in 12 to 15 TWS and achieving a SOG of 10 to 12 which I thought was great for a fully loaded boat. When you cannot actually sail the boat and the manufacturer does not provide performance data, I understand that it is tough to rate, but I think rating just based on weight is a mistake. Also, I thought your value rating was low. In our shopping efforts, we have found that once you take something like a Leopard 50 and set it up like the X5 comes standard you are actually spending more money on the Leopard so I would have also rated it higher on the cost-benefit scale. Then there is the factor of warranty which as far as I can tell no other boat builder provides anything that even compares. That being said, we have really enjoyed your reviews.

Great review thank you. Same weight performance and price as an AMEL 50 mono which I reckon sets the standard for functionality in sailing yachts. Arguably the AMEL mono has a more functional interior fit out with the lovely spacious aft cabin rather than the cramped doubles on the X5

Having sailed this cat for just 3 days the hull shapes have a lot to be desired. It hobby horses really badly even in small swells if the wave sequence is just right. The foundation needs to be right before you build the house, in saying that the rest is incredibly good. Not sure if anyone else has found this.

Leigh, thanks for the report, that hobby horsing should be addressable by more weight below the vertical center of gravity (typically below the waterline), and more weight in the center than bow and aft. When you sailed, was it fully-provisioned (which offers the opportunity to shift weight like I described, especially if Tamas positioned potable water tanks, black water tanks, batteries, fuel tanks, engines and generators towards the center), or only geared up for a few day sails?

Are any of the boats you've reviewed starting to come stock with solar + lithium ion batteries or are they still heavily reliant on generators for their power needs?

The lack of natural ventilation would be the deal-breaker for me (if I had the money, and wanted a cat ;) ). I will always turn off the AC and open the windows when I get the chance.

It would be nice to have both options, but realistically most people will use the AC to escape the hot and humid air of the most popular cat sailing areas, especially when sleeping. Natural ventilation doesn't help much when the outside air is like a sauna.

I would have scored value for money a little higher. The after sale's service is unmatched. Also, with the boat's systems being followed by the factory, resale values should be maintained. There is a record of all the maintenance work done kept at the factory! I also think you were a bit harsh on the performance category score. This boat moves with the slightest of breezes at 21T! I don't think it deserves another 10 but definitely more than a 3. The performance specs of any other boat are of a 'bare' boat so to speak. Once the weight of all the goodies are included, I would guess that the performance diminishes exponentially. Do I have the budget for an X5? No. But if I did, it would be at the top of my shopping list!

Hi Nick, Congratulations to you and Terysa on a great review. There is one point I would like you to comment on and that is with respect to the boat's weight. While it is a disadvantage from a pure speed perspective, as you pointed out, doesnt it indicate that the boat would likely have a much kinder motion in heavy seas and even at anchor (where the vessel will spend 90% of the time)?

Good review even if you were so taken by it's looks you didn't cover some things covered in the past I think. Like can you see your sails from the helm station? It was pretty obvious you got good visibility in the horizontal plane but how about looking up. I didn't see you mention the bow. Small tramps, nice seat up front though. All in all, for the size boat, not a lot of forward deck space judging by the pictures.

Backrest in cockpit lounges was way to low for comfort! On passage you will only be using this area and it will be backbreaking. Please include more ergonomics in your evaluation. Also for the astute buyer the build methods are of great importance. Looking forward to see more of you guys.

Just a note on the aircon. They've loaded up so much solar and lithium batteries that the master suite aircon runs off of the inverter. So you can run aircon all night (or day) in your master suite without running the generator. (Saw this on one of the other youtube reviews).

@@Ladybirdsin16mm Thanks for the comment. I too would love to go green. There is one video by Sailing the Space Between kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3jShHeFgpKdjKs where he ordered the batteries from a chevy volt and used them for his cat. It was about a 3rd of the cost with triple the capacity. As far as cycles, Lead Acid gives you about 200-1000 cycles, AGM gives you about 200-650 and Lithium gives approx 1000-4000. Also you can run solar directly to an inverter for some items. There are multiple "project E" initiatives going on kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHzMiZ6umr2Ketk that will be the tesla of the seas. Happy sailing!!!!!

Truly a plush home from home. 👍 I am not a fan of cats; but this one, man...! A one Tom Cunliffe once remembered a saying of an (other) old salt: "Boats are like sacks of potatoes: the heavier they are, more expensive they are." But he always fondly advocates the softer motion of a heavier boat to be more sea-kindly to the crew on extended passages. But that's (not) just him. 😀 And if you think cruising at 10 knots SOG in 18 TWS is bad enough to grant this cat just 3 points - than maybe you want to review some of the foiling AC cats.

Good review! Also love the boat. Not sure why you apologize about designs deficiencies. The lack of ventilation is particularly an issue and would be a deal breaker for us. In addition to the cost and environmental impact, air con can be very unhealthy due to bacterial and viral build up in the systems unless properly designed and maintained. Agree with the performance score but would be,great if elaborated on this a bit more. Surprised that the boat seems to be approximately 20 to 25% slower the fully loaded production cats of similar size, especially with the narrow hulls during actual sailing tests. Great reviews, really enjoy your channel! Cheers
