XTC is one of the few bands out there that covered so much ground over the course of their 14 studio album career that there's really something there for everyone, if they're willing to listen. Particularly glad you enjoyed this one -- the song so good that Andy and I ("the interviewer") named a book after it. :-)

XTC is one of the greatest art-pop bands of all time, and one of the rare bands that just kept getting better and better throughout their career. They started with a pretty heavy punk influence. This is one of their heavier tracks from the same album as "Making Plans for Nigel". XTC always has incredibly clever lyrics and a huge catalog of brilliant songs. Killer bass lines too. Oranges and Lemons and Nonesuch are two of my favorite albums of all time. To see how much their sound evolved over the years give the song "Easter Theater" a try. Brilliantly creative pop.

I remember buying this album back in 1979, and Complicated Game was one track too much for me back then. My favourite being Scissor Man. Just a few years later I was hearing it with a new ear. This track was/is a bloody masterpiece. To me it's about extreme personal anxiety and where an individual fits or doesn't in the world. It's so powerful. I totally love it. It's the best thing on the album which is really strong in any case. It's no wonder that XTC are extraordinarily influencing on post-punk bands. And they just got better with the years, but this is a standout track.

Wow. Never thought I'd see someone react to Complicated Game. This is the spiky, postpunky XTC I love - not the Beatles pastiche band they evolved into. And you're right, the song sounds fresh as a daisy. As there's lots more where this song came from (i.e. turn of the 80s Britain), let me do the Amazon bit of "if you liked this, you might also like": Joy Division: Transmission (Official lyric video) - intense, pulsing, unforgettable Gang of Four: What We All Want - a monstrous groove with disturbing guitar from the - ahem - seminal and very influential band Magazine: Philadelphia - urgent, funky, with genius lyrics from Howard Devoto, the poet laureate of postpunk

I've loved XTC since the very early 80's. They definitely had a punk kind of start. Their first one or two albums were definitely more punk (but more COMPLICATED punk). You can go nuts checking out their whole library. Making Plans for Nigel was written and sung by the bass player, Colin Moulding. I love his bass playing, but don't love his (few) songs and singing. XTC WAS Andy Partridge the PRIMARY singer / songwriter and guitar player. He has such a unique voice and wrote amazing pop songs. He's 70 now and has stopped writing songs, but hopefully his writing muse will come back to him. Love you Andy. Thank you for your amazing work!

Great Suggestion! Huge Xtc fan here. Watch the Doc! Love your take on it! One of the greatest singers ever, and songwriters of course. Like to see you get off on the bass too! It truly does hold up. So for me this song has alot to do with childhhood and the suffocating onslaught of the adult world, the coming futility.... and resulting insanity.... of following rules!!. The whole album to me is an homage to innocence, childhood and even toys. (in the Doc Andy talks about how and why he collects toys and is also a visual artist/ illustrator)The colorful basic cover art, and other songs like Life Begins at The Hop, early love in other songs. You just stepped on a sonic land mine, my friend. Grunge was an extension of punk rock. Dave Grhol played in Punk bands in DC. This Was the time of punk rock, so its not before its time, its just genius, so its timeless.

There’s a ton of great recorded music from every era. It didn’t just start in the 90’s, or the 2000s. It started when people had the ability to record music. For example, look up and give a listen to “Oysters and Wine at 2 am” by Polk Miller and his Old South Quartet, from 1903. The song is bizarre. At least to me it is. Yes, it’s obviously old, but pretty clear considering it was made when vinyl records had only been around since the 1890s. Its on youtube, too. Hope you become a believer! (I don’t put urls in comment sections since youtube tends to delete posts with them in it, even links from youtube itself. I have no idea why, but they do.)

What young people need to know is that in the late 1970's through the 80's as the punk /new wave movement began, There was no Mainstream Medium for it really. It existed as an UNDERGROUND SCENE, something that really doesn't exist anymore. It was about shows, fan magazines, lesser known college radio stations and record shops, word of mouth, etc. Sure some New wave translated into some Pop Hits, Edgy Post-Punk like this song, not so much. THEN, much later in the 1990's Nirvana, finally capsized the Classic Rock Radio format, and broke through, so the underground finally became overground, "popular" punky-trashy-edgy-grungy aesthetics became Democratized, Ubiquitous.. And that is the music/fashion world we live in and take for granted today. Like anything else it has lost touch with its roots, and youngsters don't know the history. Xtc were a vital band in that early scene, along with The Police, Blondie, the Ramones, DeVo, Etc. No one could forsee, however, that Xtc would blossom into epic recording artists on par with The Beatles!

In this song they sound much as Wire. That's not punk, it's early new wave (Fall, Wire, XTC, Magazine, Monochrome Set...), before the synth and repetitive drumming. Their 3 first albums are flawless. Then they tried to be the new Beatles and that was much less interesting.
