**If you are intending to replace/reseal your oil pan, you will need to remove the front differential cross member by cutting the tack welds. This is a bit of a pain but will make installation of the diff much easier**
Learn how to drop the front differential under your 99-04 Nissan Xterra 4WD. Your method of lowering the diff might be different than mine. I wasnt sure how this was going to go so I decided to take it slow. Post down below how your managed to drop this thing, and if you did the other method of removing the whole front cross member!

This is one of the best Xterra maintenance videos anywhere on KZbin Thanks for taking the time to explain the process and to show every step. I am going to use this video (and your other one) to tackle pulling the oil pan on my 2001 / 267k mile Xterra because I have leaks everywhere I want to fix. Thank you so much for your awesome videos. I can't believe how clean your Xterra is. Mine is pretty much all rust, oil, and other mystery fluids. But that's because here in Pennsylvania we put as much salt on the roads as humanly possible. And another thank for for actually narrating and not playing super loud shitty background music.

This video (along with the oil pan video) saves the day! I just replaced the oil pump and believe I would not have been able to without watching both of these videos and taking notes. Thank you.

Bro I love your detailed videos. Currently I've been doing a research to see how difficult is to replace the oil pan. My truck has been leaking for a long time, and it's finally starting to bother me the fact that is messing up my driveway. I will try to replace it using your videos as a guide. Thanks man!!.

29:54 ... Yup. When I first did my Diff Drop and Lokka install I removed it and reinstalled this way. It was still kind of a pain when I put it back after the oil pan with cross member installed...Trying to get all four mount locations lined up simultaneously. But still probably easier than having the cross member still on the frame.

Thanks for the vid. I pulled an engine and had to take the diff out because that massive oil pan sump doesn’t allow the engine enough room to come off the manual trans input shaft.

I like the idea of leaving the cross member alone, but after watching this, I think it must be easier to cut the welds and just weld it back in when you finish.

I believe the early first gen's never had the tack welds to begin with and I haven't heard of anyone having issues after cutting them, but if you've got a welder it only takes a second to out on a clue tacks!

Maybe an hour or two if none of the bolts fight you. It's really not all that complicated, just bulky and awkward.

I ran out of time before a camping trip to film the reinstallation of the diff but its actually not that hard to do. That is if you remove the front cross member at the same time. The wooden cart I used to lower the diff was used to raise it back in to place. With the front cross member and diff removed as one piece you can simply raise it back in to place with a jack (preferably a transmission jack or one with a large base). I set the diff/cross member unit on the cart and lifted it with my jack and got the bolts back in in about 15 mins. Im sure I will be removing it once more and will make sure to film that entire process. Thanks for commenting! Hopefully that helps.

Adrian, I have a 2000 Nissan Xterra 3.3 four wheel drive w/ manual transmission. i had it in 2 wheel drive in a snow filled parking lot. when i put it into 1st and let out clutch it was only spinning passenger side rear wheel. is that normal? i thought it was posi not open diff
@AdrianMorse42069
@AdrianMorse42069 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure but I think some models came with an open diff. Either that or your posi is worn out. They also don't hold much torque at the best of times. Mine rarely spins both tires.

@@paulairola7041 As I say in most of my Xterra videos, start soaking the bolts you intend to remove with penetrating oil a week or so in advanced. No reason you can't use power tools, but be careful not to break off any of the bolts.
