You should look up the xtool A30M --- it's essentially a D7, but without the tablet. You use your phone instead, and just download the app-- which looks exactly the same as both of these. (but only for $200). You should do a real good comparison on the A30M vs your D7. I think there's only a few things that the A30M can't do-- like programming keys; and maybe one or two others. Otherwise it has all the same live data and bi-directional controls (or at least the vast majority of them). It's a killer set up for the price. But I'm still leaning towards the D8 I think: buy once, cry once.

@calholli I'm familiar with the A30M. I've had OBDII dongle cell phone based scan tools in the past and they're not for me. However, I will say the A30M seems to work better than the ones I've tried in the past. Thanks for the comment. 🙂

@@SlipFitGarage Yeah.. The A30M is essentially a D7-- except it's a lot slower because of the blue tooth; with a short little loading screen on everything you do. I looked it up on their site though, and comparing it to the d8, there really isn't very many more special functions that the D8 does, considering it's +3x the price. It can do keys, eeprom, a/f reset, "ecu config", start/ stop reset... and a few other quirky custom options, like turning off the door buzzer or seat belt buzzer. I'm still pretty set on going for the D8 though myself. I know after I pull the trigger, I'll be glad I did.

Great explanation of the difference between these 2 scanners. I would believe the home DIY'er would need nothing more than the D7 unless they had a special purpose situation. Also i will add that the update cost after 3 years for the D7 is $99 and the D8 is $199. That may play a part in somebody's decision.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
It's really hard to say what a home DIY'er would need.... Without a crystal ball, and being able to predict future vehicle breakdowns, it's impossible to know what someone needs. For example: Someone just asked a question in the comment section about resetting the air bag passenger weight sensor in his GM truck. The D8 CAN do that procedure, but the D7 cannot. He NEEDED (and purchased) the D8 to get that job done. Owning the D7 would do him no good at that point. As for the update prices..... the XTOOL is already 3 years of free updates where most high end OBDII scan tools are one year..... Then when you do need to pay for an update, the XTOOL D8 is roughly 4 Times CHEAPER than my Autel 908 (for example) for basically the exact same functionality. That extra $100 bucks over three years is well worth the money in my opinion. YMMV. Thanks for the comment.

As a professional Mechanic since 1986, I own three scan tools now. I've owned others thru out the years. I'm interested in the Xtool line of tools. None of them however do Fca Auto auth for 2018 and above Fiat Chrysler vehicles. No doip meaning diagnostics over internet protocol and no Can hd data bus new cars that support it.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
The AutoAuth thing is going to be a problem for XTOOL if they continue to ignore that ability. However, I have not tried it myself, but they claim the "12+8 Cable" adapter will bypass the SGW module on 2018+ Chryslers and give you full control of the vehicle. Is that a great solution? No, absolutely not! However, not everyone wants to subscribe to AutoAuth for the random few Chrysler vehicles they may work on in the future..... maybe the 12+8 cable is a satisfactory solution for those people? Also, the XTOOL D9 is supposedly DoIP and CAN FD compatible. It won't be long and I suspect all XTOOL scan tools will be CAN FD and DoIP compatible.

I hadn't heard that yet. I'll have look into it. Thanks for the info. But really, after three years I'm going to probably want a new scan tool anyway. Just like my smartphone.... if I can get three years out of my smart phone, I consider myself lucky. Sure, a scan tool is NOT used like a smartphone but it's still an Android device..... How long can it REALLY last? As I mentioned earlier tonight in a different reply, to a different person, under a different video.... After three years, most people take their "upgrade money" and apply it towards the purchase of the new hotness in scan tools at that time. YMMV. Thanks for the comment!

The D7 has Special Function, it's on the home page but may not be as comprehensive.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
The "special functions" that you see on the main home screen of the scan tool is NOT the same as the "special functions" that you see in the menu structure, like I show in this video. It's a terminology problem.... that probably doesn't translate well from Chinese. XTOOL's home page calls those features "special functions".... Autel calls them "Service functions".... Launch calls them "resets", etc, etc.... However, THEY CAN ALL HAVE "special functions" when you go through the menu structure like I show in this video.... as long as the scan tool itself is at the level of having "special functions" to begin with. (The D7 was NOT at that level when this video was made) And on another note.... Even though you were technically wrong in your original comment, you ultimately got lucky and you are now correct because the D7 does indeed NOW have the REAL "special functions" that it did NOT have in this video. AFTER this video was made, In August of 2022 XTOOL sent out a major update to give the D7 line of scan tools the next level of software. The D7 NOW does indeed have "special functions" among other relearns and resets (depending on the make/model you're currently plugged into) that it did NOT have when this video was made. The D7 today is now more like what the D8 WAS originally. Clear as mud, right? lol. Thanks for the comment!

Hi, some things have changes since this video was recorded. The D7 now has more features and functions added to it via a major update as of last August, 2022. The D7 now has basically the same features and function as the D8.... However, the D7 still has a smaller screen, and a smaller battery........ And the D8 does have a bit better live data graphing, etc. The examples I used in this video are no longer relevant. The D7 can now do exactly what the D8 does in this video. All this is because Autel gave their entire line of 808 scan tools full bidirectional control as of July 1st 2022..... and XTOOl had to keep up with their competition so a month later, the D7 was upgraded.... The scan tool industry is constantly changing. It's hard to keep up with everything because it changes so fast. Thanks for the comment!

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Yeah, I agree.... The programming capability of the D8 is not particularly fantastic. The way it's advertised, you'd think it could program just about any vehicle but it can't. The way I see it, typically most ECU programming with a scan tool requires a J2534 pass through box for it to work properly. Whenever I see a scan tool (any scan tool) advertised with ECU programming capability, unless it also comes with a J2534 box, I usually disregard that advertising claim. At least that's what I've seen..... I've never personally programmed an ECU so I could be wrong. Your mileage may vary. Thanks for the comment.

apparently you have to get into their "pro" stuff for Fords. D9 or above. But they don't have GM or Dodge/Chrysler yet on any of them. I will say their customer service is top notch.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I agree.... I have had nothing but great interactions with their customer service. Example: I was having an issue with something not working on my GM truck and they created a custom software update that was only pushed out to my specific D8 (via serial number) within about one or two days. Then, once I verified that everything was working correctly, they made it available to all D8 scan tools. When I first started doing reviews for them I had a bunch of suggestions to improve the A30 Pro and they implemented every one of them..... and most of those suggestions have also spilled over to their other scan tool. As for programming with the new D9..... We'll see. I will have a brand new D9 in my hands in the next day or two, whenever it gets here. I can use the D9 but I can't film my review just yet because they are still putting the finishing touches on the software. I will post back here and let you know what the D9 can do with my 2008 CVPI. Thanks again.

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Ай бұрын
Correct, the two scan tool models shown in this video (which is almost 3 years old as I type this message) do NOT use a Bluetooth connection between the scan tool and the vehicle. It's a wired connection. However, both of these scan tools NOW come in a Bluetooth version, OR a WiFi version. Don't get me wrong, THEY ALL have wifi for their internet connection.... but the newest models actually use wifi (instead of Bluetooth) to make the connection between the vehicle and the scan tool. It's a MUCH stronger connection with a MUCH longer wireless range. (compared to Bluetooth) The scan tool serves it's own network f or this to happen. No existing wifi networks are required to make this connection. The scan tool uses wifi between he tool and the OBDII dongle.... a wireless router is not required. Thanks for the question.

If the D8 had Bluetooth I would order it right now. It may seem like an unnecessary additional function, but when standing outside the car with hood up and engine running, being able to monitor bi-directional functionality and test various parts is a plus. IMHO Seems like a $50 upgrade that should have been included in the D8....

@@SlipFitGarage That's pretty cool, but a USB can only imply it's for a computer hookup. @SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
@@oldkid6 You said "but a USB can only imply it's for a computer hookup"..... Well, it can imply more than just "only for a computer hookup"..... You could use the USB port to hookup a thumb drive for transferring files, you could use a USB port for an external mouse or keyboard, you could use a USB port to connect a printer, pretty much any computer peripheral nowadays uses a USB port. So, they're not just for updates. I'm not saying the car care nut is wrong, but I've never heard of anyone connecting an XTOOL tablet to a computer in order to share it's internet connection, and then download the updates. I'm sure it's a possibility, but it's certainly not the most common way to update the tool. Thanks.

Brian, as for updating this or any other brand, I have a 2004 Lexus SC 430, I have to think everything to be known about this car is known. Do I really need to pay for updating? Do you lose functionality if you don't? Thanks
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
If you only plan to work on that one vehicle then the only "updates" that you could possible need are firmware and operating system updates for the scan tool itself. Updates come out on an almost daily basis.... not just once per year when the new make/models are released to the public. However, working on ONE make/model certainly won't justify paying for updates. And no, you do NOT lose any functionality if you decided not to purchase future updates. I have stated this fact in every XTOOL video. In fact, I do not know of ANY scan tools on the market today, regardless of brand, where you would lose any tool functionality if you do not purchase future updates. However, there are some NEW vehicles on the market today that require the scan tool to have access to the cloud in order for some functions on the scan tool to work properly. this is a VEHICLE requirement, not a SCAN TOOL requirement.... And cloud access requires a current scan tool subscription. So, therefore, this would be true with ANY scan tool, not just XTOOL...... And again, this is only for SOME vehicles that are fairly new with in the last few years. Older vehicles do not require a cloud connection and the scan tool will always work 100% at it's current software level.

I've tried several times in my past videos to explain the "special functions" menu of these scan tools. These are functions that the "scan tool" is capable of performing.... IF the vehicle is ALSO capable of performing those certain functions. And really, the "Special Function" menu is just a list of "shortcuts" to special function that can ALSO be found in the "Diagnose" menu. Keep in mind, it's NEVER the scan tool that is performing any given function, it's ALWAYS the computer in the vehicle that is performing any function, the scan tool is simply sending the command. You can't get a vehicle to perform any function that is not already programmed into the vehicle from the factory. Now, with all that said, I have heard of others having trouble using XTOOL scan tools on certain Nissans. That doesn't necessarily make XTOOL a bad scan tool brand because ALL scan tools brands can, and usually do struggle on certain makes/models. There are no perfect scan tools on earth, regardless of brand. Even the high end tool truck brand scan tools will struggle on certain makes/models. All of those functions listed under the "Special Function" menu are shortcuts, and they don't really seem to work EVEN IF the vehicle is ALSO capable of certain functions. However, if you go into the "Diagnose" menu instead, and go into the specific module that would normally contain that specific function you're looking to perform, then click special function OR actuation tests, you should find the function you're looking for and it should work then. For example: I was trying to change tire size in the computer of a RAM truck. I selected "tire size" under the "Special Function" menu and it absolutely did not work. BUT, when I went in through the "diagnose" menu then navigated to the power train modules, then selected "ABS Module", then selected "special functions", then selected "change tire size" it worked just fine then. This type of thing happens with EVERY brand of scan tool on earth. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure your scan tool is always up to date. These scan tool manufacturers are CONSTANTLY fixing "bugs" and streamlining their software. They put out software updates on an almost daily basis. Most people who are new to scan tools think they only put out updates once per year as new makes and models are sold. But the truth is there are almost daily updates to refine current software. If your tool is struggling with a certain make/model, you should send an email to XTOOL and they can usually create a software fix and send it out in the form of an update within just a few days. These updates that are created for specific people get sent out to the entire customer base so everyone gets these fixes right away. If your scant tool is struggling, make sure it's up to date.... if it is, and you're still having trouble, send XTOOL an email. Thanks for the question.

Hello, will the scanners allow me to turn off the " spare tire low pressure " off ? 2011 chrysler 200
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Probably not. That would have to already be an option programmed into he computer directly from the manufacturer before ANY scan tool would be able to make an on/off selection. I know it can be very confusing but scan tools (ANY scan tools, regardless of brand) can ONLY make selections and changes in a vehicles computer if those things are already programmed to begin with. For example, If I plug my D8 into my 2008 Ford Crown Victoria P71 and I can select different lighting modes for the headlights and interior lights.... that does NOT mean I have those same option when I plug the same scan tool into my 2006 GMC truck. The vehicle that you're plugged into greatly dictates what menus and options appears on the screen. I have a 2022 KIA and I HATE the daytime running lights.... Not even the dealer's scan tool can turn those lights off. The manufacturer did not allow for that option when they programmed the vehicles computer. As for your Chrysler's "spare tire low pressure" message..... Rarely have I seen (if ever) a vehicle that gave an option to shut off TPMS lights or messages. It's considered a safety item and they don't want people to ignore those warnings. You probably either need to fix the spare tire, or I've heard of people who "trick" the TPMS sensor into thinking there is air in that tire. Thanks for the question,.

Yes, as long as the specific vehicle you're plugged into will allow that information to appear on the screen of a scan tool. Generally, most vehicles are programmed to show this information somewhere in the menu structure (can, and usually is in a different location for every vehicle) but occasionally you may run across a vehicle that was NOT programmed from the factory to display this information and therefore the scan tool will not be able to show it to you. This is the fault of the vehicle, NOT the scan tool. It all depends on the vehicle itself, and every vehicle (make/model) is different.

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
Scan tools don't do anything by themselves.... They only show info and data supplied by the computer in the vehicle. The info, data, features, functions, bidirectional control, etc, etc.... every last but of it is pre-programmed into he vehicles computer by the software engineers at the auto manufacturer. Scan tools simply display data and send requests to the vehicle's computer. Not all vehicle computers (makes/models) have the exact same programming. It truly depends 100% on the year/make/model of vehicle that you're currently plugged into at that moment. If the computer in your vehicle has the ability to show a cylinder balance test on the screen of a scan tool, then you will be able to see the overall "contribution" of each cylinder. Like I said though, not all vehicles have this feature programmed into the computer so just because you see it when plugged into one certain vehicle, that does NOT mean you will see it when plugged into every vehicle. And just to add more info.... some (most) vehicles will show misfire data, (but not necessarily WHY it misfired) and some vehicles include a fuel injector balance test to see how injectors are performing. (but not WHY they may be malfunctioning) And lastly, I have never seen a data PID called "cylinder compression".... In order for a scan tool to show ANY data, there must first be a sensor on the car to measure that specific data. I don't know of any vehicle that has a cylinder compression sensor so in that specific example... yes, you would need to unscrew and screw a pressure gauge into every cylinder to get an ACCURATE cylinder compression number. There are some ways to electronically measure (see) compression with a lab scope while spinning the engine over with electric starter but that equipment is far above a standard scan tool. Modern scan tools are pretty good, but they are not magic. People see "scan tools" as getting better and better all the time... when in reality its the computers in the vehicles that are getting better and better from the auto manufacturers which then makes scan tools LOOK better. I hope this all makes sense to you. sometimes my thoughts don't come out very clearly when I type. Thanks for the question.

Yes, I would agree. The D7 is FAR batter than your average "code reader". Most DIY type cheap code readers only give you trouble codes from the PCM module. Well, nowadays most vehicles have a module for every different system in the vehicle and those cheap code readers won't display those codes or live data. The D7 has bidirectional control along with live data and will display codes from ALL vehicle modules..... it's probably be more data than your average DIYer would ever need, or know what to do with. I do appreciate your comment so please don't take this the wrong way: I have said this before in many of my past scan tool videos... there is no such thing as a perfect scan tool. If you went out today and purchased the most expensive Snap-on scan tool, I guarantee you would eventually find a vehicle or two (or ten) that the tool will struggle with. It is unfortunate that your D8 shows eight unexplained data PIDs on your Nissan Frontier but that same scan tool will probably work perfectly on the next vehicle that you plug into. Other than the 8 data pids, does the tool work fine on that vehicle, otherwise? EVERY Chinese scan tool on the market, WITHOUT FAIL, has similar unexplained anomalies. I haven't used a Chinese scan tool yet that DIDN'T have a few hiccups here and there. In fact, a "perfect" scan tool doesn't exist. Not even an eight thousand dollar Snap-on. They all have problems on certain vehicles. Thanks for your comment.

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
Well, I am sorry about that. I don't control the person at XTOOL who responds to emails so there isn't much I can do to help you with that. Did you specify which XTOOL model you were specifically asking about? This particular video is about 2 different models of scan tool. They are very similar but they do have a few differences. When asking about specific capabilities with specific makes/models, you need to make sure that you specify which scan tool you're asking about. In the mean time, you can probably find the answer you're looking for by visiting their website and using the "Function Lists" which can be found under the Support tab.... I will link it here for you: www.xtooltech.com/english/FunctionQuery.html But keep in mind, like I've said in probably a hundred other replies under my various scan tool videos... the scan tool (ANY scan tool) is only capable of doing whatever the vehicle manufacturer has already programmed into the vehicles computer from the factory. Meaning..... if your scan tool allows you to operate the power door locks (just for an example) from a bidirectional scan tool, it's because the auto manufacturer has specifically wrote that functionality into the software in the vehicle's computer. The scan tool is only sending the command, the vehicles computer is actually executing the command. There is no scan tool on earth that has magic power to make a vehicle do anything it wants. Scan tools can ONLY command functions that are already available in the vehicles computer. So, to answer your original question, the bidirectional scan tools form XTOOL can pretty much command the same bidirectional control functions on your specific vehicle as any other bi directional scan tool brand. Now, with that said, nothing is 100% perfect so it IS possible to find SOMETHING that one scan tool can do over the others but generally all the import scan tools are very similar. Even the high priced Snap-on scan tools can be missing a function on certain make/models. It happens. I hope this makes sense. Thanks.

@SlipFitGarage

No, the D9 is not necessary for Key programming. (depending on make/model/type of key) The D8, and even the D7 can do basic key programming. As for TPMS, that is usually done with a dedicated TPMS tool. Some Scan Tools have TPMS capabilities included with them, but those models cost more. The D7, D8, and D9 do not really have any special TPMS capabilites like programming new sensors, etc.... but you should be able to view live data from TPMS sensors such as tire pressure, temperature, and sensor battery condition. If you're looking for full TPMS capabilites, you'd be better off looking for a dedicated TPMS tool by itself, or a scan tool that has full TPMS functionality added.

Some of the updates take a while to download and install. Especially the BMW updates for some reason. Just select all the updates and let it do it's thing when you're not using it. Walk away for an hour or so and it should be fully updated when you come back. An no, it does not update only once per year. There is a continuous stream of constant updates. You could check for updates on these tools every week/month and there will probably be something there to download and install. If you do not update the scan tool, you are not getting the total functionality of the tool. They are constantly fixing bugs and improving software every day. If it does not exist in the PCM of a 2006 GM pickup truck then there isn't a scan tool in the world that can make it happen. You probably already knew all that but I just wanted to be clear. This tool is designed to work on OBD2 vehicles. Any vehicle sold inside the untied states (and the entire north America, I believe) from 1996 or newer is legally required to be OBD2 compliant. So yes, it SHOULD work great on your 2009 Nissan..... but with that said, ALL scan tools CAN struggle on certain makes and models. @crispa1861
@crispa1861 Жыл бұрын
First of, thx for your reviews as it help me decide to get the D8. However, after updating it, this scanner is POS. I use it mainly on my Honda, and Acura vehicles, and the thing does not even have TPMS programming for normal Honda models. Reached out to tech support, and all they said was sorry. NSX, and Legend only on TPMS relearn. Who owns a an NSX, and Legend has TPMS? WTF, I wasted 650 dollars on this doorstop. I stopped using it after this debacle. And no I just did not give up, I wasted a lot of time on this just to see it it does what it says it does. More like 50 pct of what it claims, it does, other than that, it's useless. If anyone is interested in buying mine, PM me. Used maybe 10x.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage Жыл бұрын
First of all, most TPMS functions are not included on most scan tools. If you want that functionality, then you would need to buy a scan tool advertised as having the extra TPMS capabilities built-in. Most scan tools sold today DO NOT include full TPMS capabilities, including the D8. There is a reason why scan tools that have full TPMS abilities built-in cost roughly $300 more than the same scan tools without TPMS abilities. You could also buy a stand alone TPMS tool for roughly $300 bucks but they will get their money out of you one way or another if you want to have full TPMS functionality. Second, what exactly doesn't work on your car? Are you talking about features that DO work on your car with other scan tools, but not with the D8? Or are you talking about features that your car does not support to begin with? You do realize that just because you see a certain function under "Special Functions" that does NOT necessarily mean it will work when plugged into your car, right? For example, you wouldn't expect a diesel DPF regen command to properly work on you gasoline powered Honda, right? Well, just the same, there are other functions that the scan tool has, that you car does NOT support. EVERY function on a vehicle that can be commanded by a scan tool has to be already programmed into that vehicle by the automotive manufacturer to begin with. Scan tools DO NOT magically force a car to do what ever it wants, whenever it wants. That's not how it works. Scan tools simply request features and functions that are already available in the vehicles computer. That's it. If a certain function is NOT available, then there is NOT a scan tool on earth that can make it happen. Those 50% of functions that do NOT work on your D8 will probably work just fine when you're plugged into a different vehicle that DOES have some of those features programmed into it's computer. Third, you didn't "waste" any money. If you're not happy or satisfied with a purchase from Amazon, simply return it back to them. They offer free returns. Thanks for your comment.

@SlipFitGarage some people say security system changed for 2018 and above
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 10 күн бұрын
Yes, that is true. But you asked about 2017, and 2011 vehicles... All 2018 and up Chrysler vehicles have a secure gateway module. These scanners WILL still work but you will need an additional "12+8 cable" to access the vehicle's computer AFTER the gateway module. Or, another OBD2 scan tool with an AutoAuth account, a current subscription, and an internet cloud connection..... So, in basic terms, you need either an Autoauth account OR a 12+8 cable to access 2018 and newer Chrysler (FCA) vehicles. (plus the scan tool itself) The 12+8 cable plugs in directly after the module. These connection ports ARE NOT the same as the typical OBDII connector under the dash of every vehicle, known as the DLC. (Diagnostic link connector) The ports for the 12+8 cable are located usually in the center console, or behind the dash somewhere, like behind the radio. They are NOT easy to access but if you want full control with your scan tool, the 12+8 cable OR a scan tool with a paid AutoAuth account is the only way to do it. Otherwise, with none of the above, you'll only be able to check trouble codes.... no bidirectional control.

Number one, this is an old video, a lot of information has changed since it was recorded. Both the D7 and the D8 can now be purchased as a wireless device. In fact, the new D7W and the new D8W are the first affordable scan tools on the market to use a WiFi VCI, which is MUCH better than a bluetooth connection. (see my recent D7W video) Second, the D7 NOW has full functionality like the D8... The D7 now has the relearns and resets that were missing in this video. This all happened when Autel put out a major update last summer that gave the entire 808 family full bidirectional control, which is also why the OTOFIX D1 Lite is now also full featured. It was a chain reaction that rippled through the entire scan tool industry. All (most) of the mid level scan tools that were only missing a few functions got upgraded to full function tools. As for their attitude, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. I'm not sure how you arrived at that opinion but that doesn't matter..... In the end, it's your opinion. The OTOFIX is a great tool, too! Thanks for the comment.

Regardless of scan tool brand. If something doesn't exist in the first place, the it simply DOES NOT EXIST. That stands for Diesel Particulate Filter. Well, my truck has a GAS engine. There is NOT a DPF anywhere on my truck. Why would I expect a scan tool, of any brand, to recognize a DPF on my truck? I don't believe the D7 can that.... as for the D8, depending on the vehicle, I believe it has a procedure where it will allow you to REPLACE a module as long as it can read the VIN in the old module, then you pull out the old module, install the new one, and the scan tool writes the old info into the new module. This is a replacement procedure as long as the old module will still somewhat communicate with the scan tool. It does NOT write VIN numbers into modules from scratch. I am about 95% sure of everything I just wrote. If you're looking for 100% certainty then I would recommend an email to XTOOL just to be sure. Thanks for the question.

So, in other words, it's more than just a "laptop connection" as you called it..... at least on the newer scan tools, anyway.
