I have been looking for a full version of this song without the samples (even though I absolutely love them and think they add to the piece) since the doc first came out. There has to be a bootleg or something out there, but I've never had any luck. There are some of the Westbury songs on 'Nuff Said and elsewhere, so I know the show was recorded, but why this was never put out, I'll never understand. Probably one of the greatest live performances of all time. I can't imagine how empowering and emotional of an experience it must have been for that lucky crowd

Absolutely! I wish there was a full recording, and I'm still holding out hope. By the way, Nina Simone had some great live records that were illegally recorded and distributed - and most of them are still not online, vinyl only. Something to check out if you're looking for more incredible/rare Nina performances!

Amazing!! The composer of this inmortal song is Billy Taylor, with lyrics later added by Dick Dallas. Very probably Nina added lyrics of her own too.

Does anyone know where / when this was recorded? This is probably one of the best live performances I've ever seen.

Found it! Some of the following info came from the fabulous Nina Simone archivist @ Mauro Boscarol and their website The Nina Simone Database. This performance was a part of the Emmy nominated 1970 TV special "An Historical Perspective" that featured interviews with Nina and performances at Westbury Music Fair, The Village Gate and other locations between 1968 and 1969. The entire documentary is available on Vimeo, Google Video and DVD. This particular version of "I Wish I Knew How It Feels To Be Free" was performed at the Westbury Music Fair of April 7, 1968. It is not officially available in any capacity except as part of the DVD --- which you can now buy as part of Sony's CD/DVD collection "To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story ."
