From memory, I believe we first heard Suga say this in the Break the Silence docuseries which released last year. I think it was the only time he mentioned it 🤔 I am glad I am able to appreciate the lyrics/meaning before we found out about this. Because no matter what inspired the melody or a BTS song, the guys made music for us to reflect on and for it to speak to us. That’s why I don’t usually tell people spoilers/tidbits until after they listen to the song and see what they got from it. That’s just me :) I want to appreciate something and not be given too much spoilers.

Suga has mentioned that this song was written at a time when BTS was considering quitting BTS (not renewing their contract) and the pain he felt thinking about not having BTS anymore. He mentioned that when other members heard the song they all cried.

One TMI about this song is that Namjoon in one live he said that the word "Tear" really have 2 meanings: If you pay really attention in the pronounce when yoongi and hoseok said "you're my tear", one meaning is literally the tears falling of your eyes and the other "tear" means like a sound of the break of paper, when someone ripped a piece of paper sounds like that... And yes, this song is so heartbreaking after knowing the real meaning

I FRIGGIN RELATE with the gym thing lol I be running on the treadmill having cramps and sweating profusely but then they go "DASHI RUN RUN RUN" or if I hear J-Hope or Yoongi aggressively rapping its like a motivation to keep going. I also relate with the kpop only thing. I loved music but now I REALLY love it because of the crazy diversity in sounds and bangers that just get me going through life in a more fun and crazy way. Someone else might have said this already but if you peep the themes of each of their verses, “tear” takes on 2 meanings in this song: RM discusses the tears he shed during this time alongside his regret and disappointment (so during the chorus he sings “you’re my tear 😢”) Suga talks abt rather having his heart ripped to shred and set aflame than having to experience the heartbreak and betrayal of the members disbanding (so during the chorus he sings “you’re my tear- as in to tear something apart- 💔” And Hobi’s verse obviously focuses on the fear and anxiety he felt during that tumultuous time (and a fear that he’ll continue to experience such painful “partings” in the future)

To give a little context: (Paraphrasing from RM said in his vlive album review) LY is a whole series about realisation that kinda has a theme of fall in love, realise that you’re not being yourself in the relationship, breaking up and realising that in order to be in a working relationship you need to be ablt to love yourself. Tear - is the breakup song. So the rapline is saying what break up would mean to them. Namjoon - tear (from your eyes) Yoongi- tear (as in to tear paper) Hobi - fear To add: The emotional delivery seems to come from a time when they contemplated a disbandment of BTS - ultimately they decided to stay together
