Xylem and Phloem - Part 3 - Translocation - Transport in Plants | Plants | Biology | FuseSchool
Sugars move up and down the plant in the phloem. The phloem uses active transport to transport the food nutrients like glucose and amino acids around the plant.
Glucose is made in the leaves by photosynthesis. Glucose is converted into sucrose in the leaves, which then enters the phloem vessels, as do amino acids. They then need to be transported around the plant to every single cell.
The areas of the plant where sucrose is made are called the sources, and where they are delivered are called sinks.
The phloem uses active transport because the sucrose moves against its concentration gradient from a lower concentration, where it is made, to a higher concentration in the phloem cells.

Notes Phloem relies on active transport to transport nutrients and sugar around the plant. Glucose is produced in the leaves, it is then converted to sucrose in the leaves. Then the sucrose is sent around the cell in phloem vessels. Companion cells surround the phloem vessel cells whihc line the walls and provide energy for them to perform active transport.

So what I have learnt so far is that. Xylem and Phloem are parts of the (vascular) plants system.Xylem is something that takes the water absorbed by the roots through the stem toward the leaves,and the water is gets pulled to the end of the leaves which is called transpiration pull. Gives the leaves the energy of water,in turn the foods collected by the leaves which are called sugar,glucose and amino acids,goes up and down to all over the plant through Phloem vessels,the cycle continues as long as the plant gets water support and it's other basic needs such as sun and light. Is it right?or am I missing something?

They are located from the roots all the way up through the stem, so that the xylem can transport water from the roots to all of the leaves, and the phloem can transport food made in the leaves to all other cells in the plant.

around 0:43 you said glucose is being transported, how?
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 6 жыл бұрын
Simply put: Glucose is made at sources - usually the leaves. Glucose moves into the phloem by active transport. The phloem cells have sieve elements. When glucose is in the phloem cells, water also moves into them by osmosis (from the xylem, down its concentration gradient). This water creates turgor pressure in the phloem cells. There is now a sugary sap in the phloem. The water pressure forces sugars and fluids down the phloem tubes, towards the sinks (places that need the glucose). This mechanism is called 'pressure flow'. At the sinks (where the glucose is needed) the sugars are actively removed from the phloem, and the water follows by osmosis. This drives the pressure flow mechanism.
