Shout out to my incredibly rudimentary graphics explaining type 1 and type 2 diabetes AND my cheap and wrinkled backdrop 🤣. Praise God from whom all blessings flow for Mr. Hallease giving us the tea with no sweetener on diabetes as well, he's putting that master in nursing degree to use! All the continued reading is down below! Also, I'm working on getting this video captioned in Spanish and I'm debating getting it dubbed and reuploaded in Spanish as well - because Hallease is for the people! If you know someone who's just getting started on their journey make sure to share the video, all resources mentioned are down below and in the description. →CONTINUED READING Get Health Insurance Before December 15th: www.healthcare.gov ADA on nutrition/ Diabetes Plate Method: diabetes.org/healthy-living/recipes-nutrition ADA super food list: diabetes.org/healthy-living/recipes-nutrition/eating-well/diabetes-superstar-foods Food Eating Order 1: diabetesjournals.org/care/article/38/7/e98/30914/Food-Order-Has-a-Significant-Impact-on Food Eating Order 2: www.nature.com/articles/nutd201633/#Sec6 Food Eating Order 3: diabetesjournals.org/care/article/41/5/e76/36532/Effect-of-Food-Order-on-Ghrelin-Suppression Lose It App on IOS/Android: www.loseit.com Daily recommended fiber: www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/high-fiber-foods/art-20050948#:~:text=Women%20should%20try%20to%20eat,It%20can%20vary%20among%20brands. →MR HALLEASE, MSN, RN SOURCES www.atrainceu.com/content/1-teaching-diabetes-self-care www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/diabetes/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20371451 www.yalemedicine.org/conditions/hemoglobin-a1c www.cdc.gov/diabetes/basics/risk-factors.html www.cdc.gov/diabetes/library/features/truth-about-prediabetes.htm

I've been treated for a mental health diagnosis that I haven't agreed with for 11 years, I was enforced on Invega, When 22 I got diagnosed with pre diabetes, and now I'm 27 turning 28 this year in March, I found this information below on google which made me feel concerned " Prediabetes has been linked with long-term damage, including to your heart, blood vessels and kidneys, even if you haven't progressed to type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is also linked to unrecognized ( silent ) heart attacks "

Depending on your insurance you might be able to access a registered dietitian for diabetes education…but I’m not sure if that applies to a pre diabetes diagnosis. Diabetes education used to be covered for up to 6 visits I think but us dietitians are fighting to have insurance companies and healthcare in general allow for us to be reimbursed for more services so we can really help people live their best lives.

I haven’t yet finished the video but I wanted to add that years ago I was diagnosed as pre diabetic and my dr refused to put me on any medication and urged me educate myself on proper diet to reverse type 2 diabetes. Long story short, I followed her instructions, bought 2 books, and my labs came back normal a couple months later. ********back to the video*********

Loved the skit especially Mr. Hallease' need to keep the lights on. However, you did highlight something drastically important, your skit is the reality for many patients especially those with low SES. I have witnessed many physicians in low-income clinics readily prescribe patients medication for pre-diabetes without any explanation or discussion about lifestyle changes. Patients none-the-wiser trust the M.D. and readily fill their prescriptions and begin a spiral of additional complications that keep them in the doctor's office who prescribes more pills... A systematic cyclical poison. I advocate for individual wellness and education. The more we know about our bodies and proper maintenance for our individual well-being the better we can live laugh and love. But then again, the doctor needs to pay the light bill. Another great video so glad you're taking control of your health. ♥

I just got my prediabetes diagnosis and I am absolutely terrified because not only does diabetes run in an entire side of my family but I have a really rocky relationship with food in general. I have a hard time maintaining routine and I am terrified that I'm not going to get my stuff together in time. Maybe it's just because I'm in the thick of it but some days I feel scared and hopeless.

Hi. I'm a health educator for a hospital specializing in diabetes and prediabetes. I teach many classes and have 1:1 appointments with thousands of patients a year, and I always share with them that a diagnosis of pre-diabetes should be viewed as a warning sign, or if you think of a traffic light it should be viewed as a yellow light. Managing blood sugar is almost entirely within our individual control so there's no need to feel terrified or anxious about being able to manage your blood sugars. Just reduce your carbohydrate intake and that will almost always result in lower blood sugar levels. You can do it! Take a look at the nutrition facts labels on the foods that you're eating. As a reference, at each meal (not each day, EACH MEAL) your total carbohydrates should be somewhere between 30 g and 40 g, and each snack should be ideally no more than 15 g of carbs, with the assumption that you're eating two snacks per day in addition to your three meals. If you eat a lot of food like rice or noodles or pasta, then it can be very difficult in the beginning to lower your carb intake without having smaller portions of those foods. If you drink regular soda or fruit juice or sweetened teas or sports drinks, you will definitely need to reduce your intake of those or switch to no sugar versions. If you are someone who enjoys sweets a lot, you will need to reduce your intake of those. Also please don't be fooled by the term "healthy" as that can be very confusing. There are plenty of healthy foods that are not supportive of blood sugar management. Eating foods like high fiber breakfast cereals, granola, yogurt... Those foods are marketed to be healthy but they are often quite high in carbohydrates. Remember: carbohydrates equal sugar because carbohydrates are broken down into sugar when our body digests them. But you can always have more food that isn't carbs, so if you eat meat you can have more meats or seafood since animal proteins do not have any carbohydrates, and you can have plenty of non-starchy vegetables which is most types of vegetables that exist. You're only limiting carbohydrates, which encompass sugar, starch, and all types of grains. You still eat these carbohydrate foods but you will need to have smaller portions, and increase your portion sizes of proteins and non-starchy veggies. ❤️

I worked with a dietician and I'm here if you have questions or need encouragement!

To piggyback off of what @srae7658 said…I also advise my folks (I’m a dietitian with type 1 diabetes) to start their meals with protein, follow up with non starchy vegetables and end with your starch option. This should help blood sugar levels slowly trend up and plateau instead of just spiking up.

I'm 32, got diagnosed 1.5 years ago and worked with a dietician. I told her about my freakouts with counting calories (disordered eating trauma) and she made it simple for me - eat 3 meals (30-45g carbs each) and a snack (15g carbs). I keep to that and walk 1 hr per day (doctor's recommendation) and it's been great! I don't feel like I have to drop everything because I'm prediabetic, I just prioritize differently.

I was wondering about this too and feeling confused. The only thin people I know who had diabetes had Type 1. The people on my family with Type 2 or prediabetes are overweight. Historically, we have been so focused (and self shaming) about losing weight. I guess what I’m getting from this, is that we need to learn to eat well and take care of our health as a spiritual and wellness process, not just to lose weight. Not that it’s not important, but the weight alone hasn’t been a good motivator to get healthy for us.

I so love you two! This was both fun and informative. I am type 2 diabetic. Now mind you I didn’t show any signs of diabetes when I was 300lbs, but lost 50 and hi, here I am! It’s been about 10 yrs and my A1c at my last Dr visit was 6.7. 🎉 I also have Endometriosis , possible PCOS(which might be why I popped up diabetic), and hormonal issues so it is always hard to loose weight for me. All that being said with me working hard and changing my diet, hopefully next year I’ll be dropping even lower in pounds and A1c.

Thanks for the info. Sad you were symptomatic and diagnosed pre-diabetes but glad you are on the right track. There is history and close history of diabetes on both side of my family so our parents have always introduced healthy choices into how we eat that i still use to this day and they include tho not limited to 1. Regular exercise you enjoy that is not injury inducing 2. Controlled portions of food. 3. Eat your next meal if hungry rather than snacking 4. Controlled portions of meals 5. When we go out for dinner you can eat anything you want but you must have a bowl of salad😭 before. I could never eat everything i put on my plate, so now my portions are small no matter where i am and sometimes i love just a bowl of salad! I also can't eat the standard 1800 calories a day...its just too much! 6. Something ive learnt recenlty from Dr Stacy Sims is eating 20-40g of protein after a workout of >2hrs to reduce delayed musle onset pain (DOM) which means i maintain the muscle i have instead of burning it and therefore my metabolism after long distance running or cycling! Hope this helps someone

My father (88)was given Metformin for his diabetes until it destroyed his kidneys. Prescribed insulin, wouldn’t use it. I learned about Sucontrol D and Berberine for metabolism support. Limited his complex protein and researched the prescribed meds. So much contradiction. It seems like we have to be equally medically trained to see a doc. I’m a massage therapist and I’ve had more nutritional training than my dads PA at the VA. Dads supplements are maintaining his A1C well. As a member of the broken pancreas club it’s so cool to see conversations on diabetes! I liked the car visual a lot but I think one important thing to distinguish is that type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease which cannot be reversed with diet/lifestyle changes and taking insulin is absolutely necessary - there’s also 1.5 diabetes (often misdiagnosed as pre-diabetes or type 2) where someone has a much longer “honeymoon phase” than the typical type 1 but will still become insulin dependent as their pancreas slowly stops producing insulin.

I enjoyed this video so much! I don't know if I am prediabetic or diabetic at all, because I have not been able to afford insurance for myself (I don't work and I have 5 kids). I haven't had blood work done in years, but I have a ton of questionable symptoms that have been there for years. I am doing what I can to reverse certain things before I even get blood work done and maybe I will surprise myself. Just maybe.

Hey, just fyi it sounds like you would qualify for government assistance for health insurance for your children. Medicare/Medicaid for your kids and WIC/SNAP as well. Also the Child Tax Credit as well. I feel like a lot of people don’t know about these programs but they’re very helpful.

@@hallease Oh, I am aware of that. My kids are fine in that area. We've been had medicaid and snap. But ME, I don't have it. I haven't been eligible for years, me nor my hubby. The kids are always good. I'm only eligible when pregnant and 3 months after giving birth. it's a shame... I even checked about 3 months ago. Still can't get it unless I work. :/

4:54 I hope they also checked your long term cortisol levels. Chronic cortisol production can lead to an adverse accumulation of organ fat even if a persons diet is on point. Chronic stress leads to heart disease and a host of other illnesses. So, sadly, the medical definition of diabetes is still "chronic high blood glucose." Doctors don't look at or test how peoples bodies respond to simple carbohydrate intake and how their insulin is effecting the blood sugar levels. I may or may not be prediabetic because when I eat high glycemic foods and nothing else afterwards my blood sugar spikes, then tanks and it leaves me feeling gittery and shaky, leading me to believe that my pancreas is overproducing insulin to compensate for the beginning stages of insulin resistance.... Conversely it takes a very high blood sugar level for someone to experience the same symptoms of gitterness and shakiness. Anyway, I had never experienced these symptoms before I stopped strength training. I believe that my loss of muscle mass and poor diet is what lead me to this crossroad.... I've always had a poor diet, but in the past, I've always strength trained, mostly weights, but supplementing with body weight exercises.

Yeah weight lifting is good because it makes your body overall more sensitive to insulin (which is good) sounds like stopping kind messed your body’s insulin production up a bit

@@hallease Yeah. I was just to picky about my workouts. When I stopped, I was still in my bodybuilding mentality. I wouldn't let myself be satisfied with just bodyweight exercises, and I'm ashamed to admit how much muscle I've lost over the last few years.

I was also diagnosed this year at 37. I started following @glucosegoddess and listened to her book, glucose revolution. I'm feeling better and hoping repeat labs show improvement as well. Looking forward to hearing more!
