Y62 Wobble is a real thing! I have been chasing this little problem down for some time now and I reckon we have it licked. There are x4 essential components to the Y62 suspension that can affect the Y62 wobble, I’ll take you through them categorically and see if we can get your 62 driving the way it should.

Nicely explained, same thing happens on high horsepower sports cars with IRS, it’s called Kinetic Toe. Also causes the inner most edge of the rear tyres to ware prematurely.

It's the bushes in the arms letting the arms move in a toe in and toe out fashion. We have the issue in bush hacks like BA falcon sedans, you do a skid or put it under high load and you can actually see the wheel toe changing as load changes. Causes it to sway around

No idea if this would relate but fulcrum etc might be able to shed some light on shock absorber pressures which may help and translate over to the y62 system to help improve settings

Good video Dave. I do have one concern surrounding the hbmc pressurisation however; id be hesitant to run 50% more pressure through the system than standard as you're potentially setting the system up to fail with leaky seals. Hydraulic systems are made to operate within particular ranges, i don't know what Nissan have built the system to be able to handle but 50% more than standard, a heavy car and big compression due to a huge corrugation for example will be a perfect recipe for a blown seal id imagine. I suggest you get in touch with a good hydraulic shop and pick their brain on this topic further. Great work, some food for thought.

I wouldn’t be to concerned on a 14.5psi increase! As the hydraulic lines look like they are 2 wire and should easily handle 1000psi +

What are the long term ramifications of increasing the HMBC pressure?. A wobble is side to side, which is different from the rear going down equally and pigeon-toed evenly, the wobble is the rear changing toe unevenly, when it wobbles side to side it is actually steering both rear wheels left or both rear wheels right. Add more weight and making it too top heavy makes this effect of rear steering get worse as the shock struggles to control the compression and rebound action from the rocking vehicle. Adding more spring rate and more hmbc pressure is decreasing the unequal movement between the rear wheels, its effectively like putting a heavier sway bar in.

Hi David, In time when the covid all settles, I would love to come across to SA and have a long range tank, rear bar for two spares and the rear floor all installed on my TI L. Is this something you guys would do, how long would you require the car and is there a caravan park near your location? Thanks and kind regards, Dave Green

Hi Dave, great vid again. Do you know of the best settings for wheel alignment? I’ve used my trusted tire guy for 10yrs, but he hasn’t done too many y62’s. any assistance would be appreciated mate. Cheers, Adam

Hi David, I am currently running Tough Dog 300kg constant load spring in my ST-L with a 2 inch lift. Wouldn't say my car is extremely heavy but i do have a rear bar 35 inch spare and a camper trailer spare underneath. Is there a spring with a greater load rating 300kg? Is there a shock that will improve rebound considering I do not have HBMC and cannot adjust HBMC pressure?

Yeah you can get and ARB coil (sku 2988) that is a 400kg constant load although if it’s just rear bar we generally put in the 2987 200kg constant coil. I too have run Tough Dog, it’s good stuff but only lasts around 60k, then you need to swap it out

I went to 20 inch rims on 35`s to have less sidewall, this may be option 5

David, any idea why Oz Patrol bent his lower rear control arm? He thinks it's the angle that the bottom of the coil sits at when the suspension is lifted. What are your thoughts?

When you get heavy they bend, as easy as that. Old mate isn’t easy on the right foot also 😅👌

independent rears on any vehicle are over rated in my opinion….due to all the variable mentioned they cause ill handling……would rather a solid axle 4 link anyday….

It's not toe-in or out, the rear tires are spinning because the car has a lot of power =)

I'm no expert either but if the problem is that obvious then it sounds like a manufacturers fault.

Completely and totally disagree David, as you may or may not know, I've had my ST-L for 5 years now and was one of the first to have this issue. Firstly the ST-L, as you know, didn't have hbmc, i had 1yo tyres on that had done only 25000 km's, it rock and rolled like crazy under hard acceleration from 80kph, multiple alignments at different 4wd "experts", tyre rotations, flipped tyres on rims, even changed the suspension, nothing made a difference, amongst all these trials, every time I put the stock tyres on stock rims on, and made no other changes, there problem completely disappeared, put the wider aftermarket tyres on, and it returned. In the end, after 8 months we changed tyres, same rims that were on when I was having issues, no other changes, problem disappeared, never had the issue for the life of the new tires, same alignment, same settings, same suspension as when I was having issues with the other tyres. If the problem is as you say, why does it not do it with certain tyres on the same settings ?

Obviously, your problem was tyres, and that’s the first thing to fix. On other cars, tyres alone do not solve the problem 👍
