the whole make money to make yourself rich only to spend money to protect your money which means you have to work to make even more money.... this was sort of a reference back to season 1 with Askeladd's explanation about "Every man is a slave to something" cause his uncle was beating a slave without realizing he himself was a slave to money. In this case, Ketil was being a slave to his farm/money, and basically creating an endless cycle of being enslaved to money, which draws parallel to Einar and Thorfinn who are slaves, but both of them are slaves to their past and regrets. Thorfinn regrets his horrible actions taken as a result of his slavery to Revenge, and only realizing it now after his revenge is gone. Einer's regret was his desire for adventure and a better life of action and war, but he never realized he had what was most important to him right in front of him and never appreciated it.

A cool feeling I got this episode was, we went from meeting a prince, the king, world renowned Vikings and thinking nothing of it, to meeting the leader of a farm and thinking "oh shit... He like the most important person here", I think it just really shows how much smaller Thorfinn's world has become that meeting the leader of the farm feels more important than meeting literal royalty

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 63 to 65. In regards to the passage of time (the manga is more explicit about the dates) by the end of this episode it’s supposed to be October 1015, so about a month or two has passed since the last episode with Thorfinn and Einar (i.e. episode 4). Also another important thing to keep in mind, the King that Ketil pays tribute to annually is King Harald, who is Canute's older brother and King of Denmark (the King that Canute ousted in the previous episode was Æthelred (and his son Edmund)). Canute and Harald basically split the Danish crown's responsibilities between themselves after Sweyn's death. With Canute taking control of the English campaign and crown, while Harald inherited the responsibilities of governing mainland Denmark. And something important to clarify about Canute’s role/importance in the Vinland Saga series, while Canute still has a significant role to play in this arc/Season 2, he’s not as significant to the narrative as Thorfinn is (or Einar arguably). And after this arc/Season 2, Canute’s presence in the series will decrease significantly. Also interesting to see how this episode incorporated some of the cut manga dialogue of chapter 60 (which was what episode 4 adapted) into the last scene of this episode (where Einar states he and Thorfinn are friends).

Thorfinn is disillusioned with war and fighting, but the work of farmers is actually intriguing him for the first type and he's seeing a whole new world and livelihood that exists outside of war. He's basically realizing how farmers are more hardworking and impressive than being some kind of viking warrior and bringing destruction everywhere, which is major leaps from the season 1 version of him.

In one of my final Econ master classes we learned how ancient Greeks first made the connections that the more “private property” or wealth people had the more hurt they felt if they lost it. When Thorfinn was admiring the plow, it really puts into perspective how lucky we are, and shows how revolutionary and miraculous it must have been for people when it was invented. It kinda made me think of the plow from the perspective of someone who's lived in a world without this seemingly obvious thing, vs someone who's probably never eaten stuff produced by it because we are so far ahead of it. Also he probably was impressed by it cuz he was both from an infertile, mostly animal based community and not agricultural, and he had never had the chance to grow up around civilian environments to use them and see them be used.

Honestly, it goes so much further than appreciating the work of farmers. Why does the master work alongside his people? Why does he need slaves when he has retainers? Why does he need more land, even with everything he owns? Because he has to pay tribute to Harald, or Harald will take everything away from him. What Ketil is doing is keeping the peace in the land he inherited. And maintaining peace in a world that loves war is the hardest job of all.

Considering the setting Thorfinn's developing philosophy is reminiscent of Early Christian Monastic Traditions. (Ideas of living in peace, turning the other cheek, giving up the pursuit of wealth, instead choosing a life of poverty). Though this being a Japanese Manga there's definitely some Buddhist influences in the development of Thorfinn's philosophy. There's some overlap between the two. I'm just saying that due to the setting, Thorfinn would be more akin to those Early Christian Monastic Traditions.

Not really a spoiler, but yeah there will be a few minor timeskips since we don't need to factor the daily progress of growing wheat and cutting trees to. It can instead be used as a landscape for the character interactions between Thorfinn, Einar, old man Sverkel and anyone else relevant. For Thorfinn, everything is a rebirth now. Inherently, he's now paying attention to what creating means, having only known how to destroy for years.
